My initial feelings are that this years carousel won't be as extensive. Maybe by the time I'm done with my write up, I'll change my mind. Let's run thru the divisions
AFC East One team looking for new starter
Buffalo - 100% set with Allen
Patriots - Wasted QB year in Patriots land. Mac Jones was iffy coming into the year, and a third stringer by game 17. Yet Belichick did nothing to see if he had something in Rourke. Belichick is now gone but he leaves the Patriots with the #3 draft pick, which figures to be a QB unless they go with a free agent. Backups/Bridges currently are Zappe and Rourke.
Dolphins - 100% set with Tua. Contract time !!
Jets - Jets will try again with Rodgers. It seems probable to me that the ride is over for Zach Wilson. Maybe I'm wrong and they'll still try to groom him, but my guess is he is wearing a different uniform come Sep.
AFC South No teams looking for new starter.
Titans - Titans will roll with Levis and see if he's the guy. Had an up and down campaign and hard to tell. If he is, Titans did well to grab him in 2nd round. Tannehill is a FA and will likely sign as a bridge or backup elsewhere.
Colts - Colts will roll with Richardson. He played so little, it's impossible to know if they got their guy. Minshew is a free agent and looks to hook on a bridge or backup somewhere. (Maybe Indy)
Jags - Set with Lawrence. May or may not get new contract this year. Beathard appears locked on as backup for now.
Texans - 100% set with Stroud.
AFC North One team looking for a starter.
Bengals - 100% set with Burrow.
Ravens - 100% set with Jackson
Steelers - After year 2 of the Kenny Pickett experiment, I think it's failed. Trubisky was released on the day after the Superbowl. And Mason Rudolph is a free agent. Hard to tell what Steelers do. Do they try to give Pickett another chance? They might be a good spot for one of these bridge guys like Tannehill or Minshew.
Browns - Set (for better or worse) with Watson. The cheap, fun years are gone. Without any fun. Now his cap hit the next 3 years are 64 mill per year. Browns had a revolving door of backups. I think they have to roll with Watson. Maybe upgrade his backup.
AFC West 2 teams looking for a starter.
Chiefs - 100% set
Chargers - 100% set.
Raiders - Raiders seemingly moved on from Jimmy Garofalo even though he has 2 years left on moderately expensive deal. Does he gets moved? New England needs a bridge QB. But is O'Connell the guy? 4th rounder had moments. At the very least, Raiders would seem like a candidate for a strong backup like Minshew if Garofalo is moved.
Broncos - Broncos gave all indications that they are moving on from Russell Wilson despite him playing much better. And it figures to be a messy divorce. The gift that keeps on giving, Wilson would have a dead cap of 85 million if cut outright, so it appears that resolving themselves of the Wilson problem will wreak financial havoc for a few seasons. Stidham is the backup. Denver picks 12th. They need to get lucky in the draft with a 2nd tier QB or sign someone to a cheap 3-4 year deal. Like 3 years, 15 mill for Mason Rudolph.
NFC East - One of 4 needs a starter
Dallas - Dak Prescott enters the last year of his deal. With a 59 mill cap hit and a 61 mill dead cap and Jerry Jones wrapped around his little finger. Dallas is going to probably extend him and create dire cap problems down the road.
Philly - 100% set with Hurts
Washington - Commanders/Redskins/Football Team went from Sam Howell is the future, to a new coach and the #2 overall pick. It just makes sense they will go for one the new shiny QBs in the draft. Keep Howell as backup.
Giants - Giants made a stupid long term deal with Jones. He performed badly and then got hurt. Giants are seemingly stuck with him for another year. Tyrod Taylor was the backup but he's a FA. At a minimum the Giants need a really solid backup.
NFC South - 2 teams looking for a starter, but TB might re-sign their guy.
Tampa - Signed Mayfield to cheap one year deal and it worked out. Allowed them to solve their Tom Brady cap woes. But Mayfield is a FA and now will hold TB hostage. TB will probably pay the ransom.
New Orleans - Year after year, New Orleans refuses to fix the mess they created by throwing tons of money at Drew Brees at the end of his career. What they needed to do last year was sign a cheap bridge QB. Instead they signed Derek Carr to a 4 year deal $140 million dollar deal. They missed the playoff despite being in the easiest division in football and enter 2024 in cap hell once again.
Carolina - Praying that Bryce Young turns it around.
Atlanta - Appears that Desmond Ridder is not the answer and that Heinicke is just a bridge QB. A lot of talk that they might be a candidate for Justin Fields if he is traded.
NFC North 1 team needs a starter, yet 2 may be looking for one.
Packers - Packers "get lucky". Love appears to be the man going forward. Now they need to sign him to long term deal.
Vikings - Vikings have the ability to fix the QB situation. Cousins is a FA and has $28M dead cap hit. They have decent cap space. They have the #12 pick. He's 36. They should move on. Instead, they probably resign Cousins to 3 year, 100 million dollar deal.
Bears - Bears find themselves in the exact situation they were a year ago. Holding the #1 pick and deciding what to do about Fields. They probably messed up by not trading Fields and going for Stroud. Do they reset the financial clock with Caleb Williams, and trade Fields? I would. And I think they will.
Lions - Goff is on the last year of his deal. Detroit needs to lock him up for 3 or 4 years without killing their cap.
NFC West - No teams looking for a starter.
Rams - Stafford is 36. He has 3 more years on his deal but can let him walk in 2 without much penalty. They should stay the course and start looking for replacement next year.
49's - 100% set with Purdy. Backup Darnold probably looks to find deal elsewhere.
Seattle - Have 2 year reasonable deal with Geno Smith. They should probably ride with that but start looking around since he's 34. Take a chance on somebody like Rattler or Nix.
Cards - Signed Murray to long term deal and are stuck with him for better or worse for 3 more years or so.
