Sea Ray posted a story on the football thread about the transfer portal but it is a lot worse with basketball currently.
Just read where Jerry Jones has offered double the money to any former Kentucky commit to get them to Arkansas.
It's to the point that college basketball is just unrecognizable at this point and it's not going to get any better. With the portal and online betting being what they are I can see point shaving scandals in the near future.

I saw that earlier today. Just disgusting what college sports has become. You almost knew college sports would get even more slimier when paying players became legal.

Wow, here's a guy with eff you money truly using it to tell someone eff you. Almost admirable. Almost. It would work if Cal could actually coach them up. Jerry, the Walton's and Tysons aren't going to be happy with their investments if Cal can't get Arkansas out of the first round like at Kentucky.
Football is going to be a player there because Sam Pittman is on the hot seat. If Arkansas moves on from him then the eff you money will go to the football program.

Speaking of the Wild West, AJ Storr to Kansas.
The Jayhawks are loading up on wings in the portal. Riley Keugel and Zeke Mayo are transferring in plus they are looking at Rylen Griffin from Alabama.

Aly Khalifa from BYU to Louisville. What's crazy is he's redshirting. Louisville could really use the players right now.
Really thought he would follow Pope to Kentucky.

What in the world is going on at Duke?
I know they have the next great floor slapper coming in with Cooper Flagg but all but two players are in the portal.
Either they are running dry on NIL money or Scheyer is trying to out-Cal Cal.

Agree with all of this. The college basketball landscape is pretty awful, imo.

If college basketball doesn't get things fixed (and it probably goes hand and hand with any NIL legislation at the NCAA level) it will become a March sport and thats it. Its a shame because I feel like CBB use to have far more interest than what it does today.
Honestly I don't know how to fix it, but it pretty much starts in relative anonymity and ends on a Monday night in which the game starts when half the country is asleep.

I'd argue it's been an extremely niche sport outside of March for a long time, regardless of the current chaos.

Sports betting will prop it up for a few years.

Gambling has corrupted sports in the past, and it will do so again. You can ...... bet on it.

There's actually a simple way to fix it.

But will the Kentucky fans?If Pope is able to build something then yes. This year is likely a wash considering the circumstances but if there was a time to move off Calipari this was the year.
I posted this in the UK thread but it's like WVU football fans from the RichRod days. You will have the 2010-2020 generation of UK fans who remember the Cal era and want to get back to that. Then you have the older generation who have been through the Tubby years, Sutton years, and even the latter Joe B Hall years.
I wasn't crazy about the Pope hire but he's making the right moves IMO. Jason Hart and possibly Alvin Brooks for recruiting eases my concern about him being able to recruit. Right now with the state of college basketball stability is key and having an alum at the head of the program (see Hubert Davis and Jon Scheyer) provides that. As long as Pope wins the job will be his as long as he wants it.

This is what I have been thinking. The universities just need to make them contract employees for X amount of years. That way you know who is coming back and who isn't for any given year,

It’s a complete rebuild for the Vols next year. I think I’ll focus my attention on baseball and football and then see where we stand in basketball at about midnight madness in the Fall

As long as any coach with a brain hits the transfer portal for players they can field a pretty successful team.

Meh, it’s a complete rebuild for every college basketball program in the country and will be for years to come because of NIL and the new transfer rules. Duke is going to have a completely new roster, for example.
All three teams I follow, Dayton, OSU, and Toledo are all going to have completely new rosters. Hell, Dayton’s sharpshooter is probably hours away from transferring to UCONN for a big payday. Dayton already has 2 transfers signed and probably going to have more. It’s a new world.

Kentucky is in on Koby Brea as well. UConn just landed Aidan Mahaney from St Mary's and Liam McNeely on Friday.
I posted this in the football thread but I look for schools to really push "academic requirements" to muddy up the waters for the multiple transfers. That's probably just going to eventually be another lawsuit that gets overturned.
Funny you mention Duke though. Everyone is transferring out because of the incoming freshman class coming in. Scheyer is trying to out-Cal Cal.
Edit: UConn is out for Brea according to Norlander leaving Kentucky in the driver's seat. Pope has been killing it in the portal so far.

John Calipari lands biggest transfer portal star yet at Arkansas for huge NIL payment
Arkansas may have outbid the NBA’s interest in Johnell Davis with a big NIL deal for the transfer portal’s No. 1 ranked guard
By Ricky O'Donnell May 1, 2024, 8:00am EDT
Johnell Davis has been one of the best guards in men’s college basketball the last two years. In 2023, Davis was the leading scorer on a dominant Florida Atlantic team that made an inspiring run to the Final Four as a No. 9 seed. Davis followed it up with an even better individual season this past year, improving as an outside shooter and playmaker as FAU made another tournament appearance. Davis declared for the 2024 NBA Draft after the season ended, but also kept his eligibility and put his name in the transfer portal. When head coach Dusty May left Florida Atlantic for Michigan, it was assured Davis was gone either way. He was ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the transfer portal by some outlets, including CBS Sports.
Davis made his commitment on Tuesday night after fielding offers from some of the biggest programs in the country. John Calipari and Arkansas won out. Davis wants to play in the NBA next season, but at the moment he’s not on ESPN’s top-100 big board and doesn’t appear in most two-round mock drafts. Respect if he wants to try to grind his way into the league on a two-way contract, but Arkansas is likely offering even more money thanks to a big NIL deal. Davis signed an NIL deal with Arkansas worth “north of $1 million,” according to Goodman. That would put him in line with the biggest NIL earners in the transfer portal so far. Indiana reportedly paid center Oumar Ballo — another consensus top-3 portal recruit — $1.2 million for his commitment earlier in April.

Adou Theiro is the one I don't understand. He entered the portal before Cal even left for Arkansas, found out later that Cals staff (Coleman) screwed up his NBA paperwork, and still follows Cal to Fayetteville. He was the most physical player on a team that couldn't play physical and was the first one pulled.

Great Osobor from Utah State committed to Washington today, landing oma 2 million dollar NIL deal.
Kentucky had him on a visit, took a commitment from Brandon Garrison (who was on a visit to Arkansas at the time), and cut ties with Osobor right then.
Just more of what's wrong with college sports right now.
