If you’ve never been, go. A couple coming to our continent in the next decade. Awesome to see them on your home soil. Also awesome to travel internationally to see them, too.
Neat connection to this iteration for our family: daughter (in college) has a high school classmate who already logged time in a match for her country. Just a few years ago we were watching her smoke people at high school track meets in sprints. Now she’s an olympic footballer.

Nadal wasn't much of a challenge for Djokovic.
He hurt his thigh in practice on Wednesday. He was playing well the last two sets last Sunday (9 days ago). It might not have made a difference against Jokovic, but if Nadal could have caught just a miniscule of a break in the draw, he may have had time then to ramp up to a level to compete better against Jokovich in a later round. The injury and the bad draw and it was over before it started. 100% carbon copy to his horrendous draw in the French Open.

Why is the U.S. so bad a 3v3 basketball?

From cnn.com: The rules surrounding eligibility for Olympic competition are somewhat restrictive, meaning that it isn’t case of selecting the best hoopers available. Per FIBA, rosters must feature two players ranked within the top 10 of their country and two players ranked within the top 50 of their country or have the minimum number of ranking points.
Players earn ranking points by competing in FIBA 3x3-endorsed events, meaning that hypothetical first-time 3x3 players are not able to play at the Olympics.
/
I believe the FIBA season overlaps with the NBA season, but at the very least these rules badly limit who is eligible or would want to play

3x3 is so ragged to watch. I know it's schoolyard style so it's going to be more chaotic, but I expected it to look like it's being played at a higher level. So much of it has looked like trash.

The women seem all right. The men can't hit what are gimme shots in the NBA. Nobody's got a crossover or a step-back jumper. The ball movement is rudimentary. That 3-point line would be a layup for Steph. I expect LeBron to bring a Dream Team in 2028 and annihilate everyone.

The rules are very weird, I really think it plays into it being a rough product. Did you know they use a smaller ball? Free throws being worth 2 points when a "2 pointer" is worth 1 point is a strange decision. Very short shot clock also I think hurts, I don't know why they felt the need to make it so different from 5x5.

I still root for Mike Boit in that race. I was a wee sprout of a child at that time and we were watching the Olympics that night, and my dad decided to play a dirty trick on me. He asked who I was rooting for. I picked Boit, because his name sounded cool. Like I knew about nationalism. I was pre-k. Anyway, my dad knew Wottle was going to win, because it had happened hours earlier, so he picked Wottle. And he spent the whole race taunting me that Wottle was going to come back and win. I was like "no way." Well, way, obviously. I was crushed.
Anyway, after I learned years later how time zones work, the level of my father's deceit became clear. So my dad and Dave Wottle can both go get bent.

I have a story like M2's. The famous USA-Russia hockey game in 1980 was on a 2 hour delay. It was easier to do this back in 1980 because there was no 24 hour news coverage and no ESPN giant as of yet. But, there was Sports-Phone (1-800-976-1313). I called that everyday to get Reds scores from 1978 until 1982. It was .25 cents per call and, some nights, I'd call 15 times (and my parents paid it without ever telling me to call less). Good parents.
Anyway, I started calling about the USA Russia game and my dad warned me - - you can call but if you let me know the score/outcome then you are in trouble. I found out the US won and I decided to act all depressed while watching the game. My dad got pissed that I ruined it! Well, at the second intermission my older sister asked me who won and I told her without thinking or telling her to keep that quiet. She came in right towards end of the game and said to my dad (who still thought my being depressed meant the US lost) and blabbered out, "Oh, thats the score the US won by right, Jimmy?"
I still laugh at my dad to this day that I had him going until my sister ruined it.

In '73-'75 I'd call the newspapers in town and ask for the Sports Department. I'd get my scores that way before others had them. Needed to make sure that nobody tried to pull a fast one on me by getting an early score themselves. Gambled every single day in highschool...a lot. Everybody did. We'd have 12-15 people in the wrestling room playing texas hold 'em. The game would last for hours and people would come in and out throughout. During school when I was 15 I'd go down to the horse-track during the day. Try to find winning tickets on the ground. I'd go up to the window and bet at 15. Went to the dog races regularly at 17. Went every day at 18. Played pool for money a lot from 12 to 19. Played foosball a lot, and played a lot of foosball tournaments in different towns at 18 and 19.

To be fair, ABC spoiled it right before the start of the game with a live shot of a mob of U.S. fans ecstatically chanting U-S-A outside the arena after it had already ended. My parents and I did a full media blackout leading up to the game. So we had no idea, but then the phone rang a few minutes before the game was about to start. My mom went to answer it. Both my dad and I were rushing toward her telling her not to answer the phone. It was my grandmother on the other end of the line (a dear, sweet woman with zero understanding of what spoilers are). She supposedly said "Did you hear? They won!" In that moment, my mother failed poker face. I believe her answer was something along the lines of a deadpan "Oh, that's great." We knew instantly. The mere fact that my grandmother was calling at that time pretty much gave it away.
Fortunately, we almost immediately saw ABC air its pre-broadcast spoiler, letting my mother and grandmother off the hook.

Definitely right up there as the most thrilling for me, too. One of the great calls of all time, too, by Mr. Michaels.
I try not to be that guy when it comes to new sports in the Olympics. In fact, I like most of them. I'm pro skateboarding and anything cross (have you seen the whitewater kayaking cross?!) is amazing. Rock climbing, I'm all in. I even came around many years ago on artistic swimming (formerly synchronized swimming) and rhythmic gymnastics, both of which have really progressed.
So I'm not coming at this from a curmudgeon standpoint, but break dancing isn't a sport and the entire "you got served" atmosphere around it is artificial and silly. FWIW, I like break dancing. Thing is you can see breakers as good these Olympians in downtown anywhere in the U.S. and beyond. You could see moves as good or better 40 years ago, when many of them were still original moves. The entire pretense that this is a competition with some sort of rational objective framework pretty quickly descends into caricature. Honestly, it felt like watching a bad game show. They need to pull the plug on this one.

Jacob Ingebrigsten, hands down the world's finest middle- distance runner, takes the gold in the 5,000.
Lia Thomas just won gold in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. I've done a quick search and I can't find any evidence that anyone's done that before. It's incredibly hard to do. Cannot stress enough how different the skill set is between the two races. I can't remember anyone doing it. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Maybe someone did it at different Olympics. Maybe it happened pre-WWII.
But if anyone's got any information on it, I'd be mighty appreciative. Thomas might have made some serious history.

Agreed, feels like this one belongs alongside a 'yo mama' joke competition.

Wild that there's breaking but no baseball or softball this year.
I guess Jordan Chiles has to send back her bronze. That situation was weird when it happened, and it's weird now when being reversed on appeal.
Steph. LeBron too, but Steph - damn.

Yeah. Closing minutes of championship game, and Steph went ruthless, cold-blooded assassin.
And I have to imagine that watching Secretariat in 1973 probably looked a lot like watching the US women 4x400 relay finals.

Lia Thomas is the transgender swimmer. Gabby Thomas is the runner.

D'oh! Gabby Thomas. Though my question still stands. Is she the first to gold in both relays?

Got my answer. I fogged on Allyson Felix doing it (twice!) in 2012 and 2016.

Man, very happy that WBB pulled that gold medal game out...
But that was some IOC level corrupt horrible refereeing... France was able to foul and basically play a different game than the US. We better get used to it bc every other nation will now try the same

US shot 34 free throws and it probably could’ve been 60. Thankfully they made just enough. Bench made the difference.

I’ve watched a lot of basketball and I’ve never seen anyone else shoot the ball the way Steph does. Ever ever ever. Crazy.
And yeah, Lebron played the Draymond Greene role to perfection.

Y’all got your wish. It won’t be back in 2028.
Also, Sifan Hassan winning bronze in the 5k and 10k and then going out and winning the Olympic marathon against a pretty solid field is probably one of the greatest athletic feats ever. She ran over 38 competitive miles this week.

.
The Australian woman who went viral could have been a Tina Fey skit. The winners struck me as doing the same stuff being done in the 80's and it was done better by Julia Stiles in Save the Last Dance. One of the women in the finals was wearing an outfit that looked like a Mattress Warehouse uniform.

No break dancing but it looks like they're adding flag football. Is flag football a summer sport?

It was really terrible in the context of a sporting competition. Honestly, it was hard to tell at times whether they were being serious or trying to mock break dancing. I saw a video of a break crew in downtown Boston that put up a sign that said, "MUCH better than the Olympics!" I get the feeling there was a lot of pushback from inside Hip Hop culture that what they were doing was pretty shameful.

Someone suggested that Jordan Chiles state that she gone for a swim in the Seine while wearing her medal and, darn it, the medal slipped off into the river and she can't find it.
