Late 70's in Cincinnati you had two sports stories, the Big Red Machine and Faust's Crusaders

Glad Gerry still gets local recognition this way, bc nationally all he is remembered for is ND. But always seemed like a classy guy, at least from what I can recall

He was a great high school coach and fit particularly well at Moeller. But those skills didn’t translate to college though. But a fine man and leader of young men. Don’t see as many of those these days. RIP Gerry.

Yes, it is Gerry
I think he was a good guy but he greatly benefitted by being able to draw from all over greater Cincinnati. My school (Princeton) beat him while I was there and we didn't have that advantage

Those Princeton teams were unstoppable. At that time, only St. X was permitted to draw students outside their parochial feeder school areas, but everyone knew Moeller was breaking the rule. Parity came to the GCL when that was changed. Faust sent some great players to ND and I suppose that relationship somehow convinced them he was qualified to coach a major D1 program with a fan base that would not tolerate anything but consistent runs at the national championship. He would have been better suited going to a less prominent program first, but he believed the hype. It's a shame because he was an amazing coach/leader and might have succeeded in college football had he taken that intermediate step.

Faust was proof of the old parable : Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.
