So which clubs get invited to play in this? I see that MIA and SEA are representing MLS even though neither team advanced far in the MLS playoffs.

Cincinnati will host games involving Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund (x2), and FC Salzburg v Pachuca.

Knowing nothing about soccer, it's this the actual "World Cup" and if not, how does it differ?

This is the “World Cup” for professional clubs, not national teams like the original World Cup.

It’s existed for a while, but FIFA has expanded it greatly and moved it to the US for this years version. It’s basically a giant money grab for FIFA and will add more games to the yearly schedule in a time when most elite clubs are in the offseason.

What a great opportunity for fans in the Tri-County Area and beyond.

And on that note, the MLS is trying to reduce it's schedule. They realize that they've gone too far.

Hopefully they just get rid of the Leagues Cup.
