Just saw where Ohio State picked up former WVU RB CJ Donaldson.
Curious to see how he plays into the rotation next year. He's a big bruising back.

between the tackles kind of guy. I liked him but he always seemed to be nursing something. Can't question his toughness working through it though.

It’s official. Michigan is simply in Ryan Day’s head. It’s the only explanation.
Out to a 24-0 lead against #1 Oregon.

https://www.si.com/college/notredame/football/notre-dame-football-vs-ohio-state-series-history
From Sep 19, 2023...
Despite competing every year in recruiting for the best players in the Midwest, Notre Dame and Ohio State have actually only met seven times on the field, with five of those matchups coming in the regular season. The Buckeyes have won five in a row against the Irish and lead the all-time series 5-2, including a 21-10 victory in the season opener last year in Columbus. Don't know the results of that 2023 contest.
2022 – Ohio State 21, Notre Dame 10
2015 – Ohio State 44, Notre Dame 28 (Fiesta Bowl)
2005 – Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20 (Fiesta Bowl)
1996 – Ohio State 29, Notre Dame 16
1995 – Ohio State 45, Notre Dame 26
1936 – Notre Dame 7, Ohio State 2
1935 – Notre Dame 18, Ohio State 13
1935 - Billed as the “Game of the Century” and voted as such by football writers in 1950, Notre Dame’s victory over unbeaten Ohio State occurred in the first meeting between the two teams and featured a then-record crowd in Ohio Stadium. Notre Dame trailed 13-0 at halftime and 13-12 late in the fourth quarter before the Irish defense forced a turnover, giving the ball back to the offense. With 32 seconds left, Bill Shakespeare threw a touchdown pass to Wayne Millner, giving the Irish an 18-13 win. Unfortunately, the Irish would be upset the following weekend by Northwestern before tying Army, two results that denied the team a chance at the national title.
2022 – The Fighting Irish defense held Ohio State’s vaunted offensive attack to their lowest point total in the Ryan Day era, but Notre Dame’s offense was unable to hold up its end of the bargain in a 21-10 loss in the season opener in Columbus. Things started well for Notre Dame, with now-Buckeye Lorenzo Styles taking the first play from scrimmage 54 yards into the Buckeye red zone, but Notre Dame was forced to settle for a field goal. After CJ Stroud hit Emeka Egbuka for a 31-yard touchdown pass, the teams traded punts until Audric Estime capped off a 10-play, 87-yard drive with a 1-yard score. Notre Dame held that slim 10-7 margin until Stroud gave the Buckeyes a lead they would never relinquish with a 24-yard strike to Xavier Johnson with 17 seconds left in the third quarter. Notre Dame’s defense wore down in the fourth quarter, and Ohio State iced the game with a 14-play, 95-yard touchdown drive that took over 7 minutes off the clock. The hangover from the loss lasted into the following weekend, as Notre Dame was shocked by Marshall in Week 2 but would rebound to finish 9-4. The Buckeyes would take an undefeated record into the season finale against Michigan, where they fell 45-23 to the underdog Wolverines. A controversial loss to Georgia in the College Football Playoff cemented the 2022 season as a big “what if” in Columbus.

The Caleb Downs play on 2nd down shouldn’t be lost in the Sawyer play. That was arguably more important.

Sark has to live with that for the rest of his career. Isn’t Arch his short yardage weapon? It was 1st and goal from the 1!
Yea I couldn’t believe Arch didn’t come in the game in that spot. They converted with ease that first time around.
In any event, what an amazing goal line stand after looking absolutely gassed coming down the field. Downs knocks them back behind the sticks and Captain Jack takes the ball back and to the house.
Incredible.

I will go to my grave with the simple thought that on 1st and goal from the 1…
Run 4 straight tight QB sneaks or RB dives. Leave no room for a loss of yardage. If you don’t make it in 4 tries I don’t know what to say but I won’t criticize the play calling.

I do think the one personnel foul on our offensive lineman was bogus though. He drilled the Texas guy while Tate was still be tackled by three guys. Maybe the whistle had been blown, but they were still trying to tackle Tate.
Regardless, those penalties need to be cleaned up significantly, in order to beat the Fighting Irish!

I tend to think the same thing, but was listening to some analysis this morning that said their goal line strategy would have been based on the film they watched from OSU all season. Oregon tried that as did Penn State and there was nothing to be had going right at the that D line on the goal line. So he tried it the first play and it was more of the same. So that's why he pivoted. Now, this person also said a toss sweep from a shotgun is absolutely never the right call in that situation, but not wnating to just do 4 straight dives was very much justifiable.
It was the first time in the game Texas was at the goal line. Their previous 2 TDs were from around the 20, so this is the first time they actually had to execute at the goal line.

That happened because the refs waited wayyyy too long to blow the play dead in the first place. Tate was stopped and was being mugged by 4 Texas players for multiple seconds. It was almost as if the refs were hoping Tate fumbled the ball. That play was weird and shady, frankly.

Why go tight and put everybody in the box...... 4 wide, single back, line has one and ones and see who wins. if they uncover a wr simple screen TD either way.
Why get your QB hurt, just dumb.
If the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame, they will have beaten all the other teams in the final 4, the #1 seed, and Tennessee and Indiana….. so 6 of the other 11 playoff teams.

If you are going to call my remark/idea “dumb” can you show me the injury risk of QB sneaks other than in anecdotal fashion?
I’ve never seen an old-fashion QB sneak be called out as an elevated injury risk. That said if I’m calling plays I wouldn’t rely on 4 straight QB sneaks. I’d use a RB straight at one of the inside holes as well.
No shotgun. No dancing around in the backfield. No lateral runs/throws. 1 yard.
If Sark had followed my directions last night I’m 95 percent sure they get it in on 4 tries. The phrase “gassed” was being used about the OSU D before Sark screwed the pooch.

There are pros and cons of the 12-man playoff but I love that in most years (especially once the brackets are fixed) the eventual winner will have a very respectable resume.
(We were close to PSU possibly winning with a draw of SMU, BSU, ND and Texas…had it gone that way it would have been a little icky once the dust cleared)

He got the concussion on the tush push? There were about 300 QB sneaks in the NFL this season. Way more in college. The only QB sneak injury I can ever remember is Mahomes back in 2019. So if I'm a coach, and there's a 1/3,000 chance that my QB will get injured, but I can guarantee that I'll score a TD in a crucial situation, I think I'll roll the dice...

Thats a lot of message board scuttlebutt based on nothing. Sayin is going to be QB1, Kienholz QB2 (if he stays, which I think he will), and TSC will be QB3.
They will likely bring in a Chuganov type to be a glorified grad assistant.
For some reason Pete Nakos said OSU was involved with Beck when he entered the portal, which was complete nonsense.

01-14-2025, 10:29 AM
And honestly, I wouldn't say Sayin is guaranteed the spot. There have been a lot of reports that Keinholz has taken some serious strides. People, including me, have a bad taste in their mouth over him because of how he looked in the Cotton Bowl last year, but I and others need to remind ourselves he was a true freshman. It would actually work out better if Keinholz started this year, Sayin transferred, so that way TSC could step into the starting role as a sophomore.
At the end of the day, with OSU, QB is the least of my concerns.
Sayin might be good, he was a big time recruit, but not like TSC. TSC is a freak of nature.

Yea, Day wants 4 QB's at the minimum. I do think they will be ok with Sayin and St Clair, although I think Keinholtz may be best served spending another season in CBus as QB2. He came from North Dakota, enrolled in the Summer, and didn't have a whole lot under his belt when he was thrust into the Cotton Bowl last season. He wasn't ready, and it made sense as OSU wanted to see what they had in Brown.
They will find a glorified grad assistant who wants to come in and play QB.
FWIW I think it will be Sayin (who apparently was #1 on their board in his class) and then a battle with TSC in Sayin's Jr year.

Just watched a replay of the Irish and the Nits. Notre Dame as a team plays better than the sum of its individual parts. Intensity, second efforts, and a gleam of confidence that they will win. The Buckeyes will fail if they do not execute the fundamentals of tackling. The Buckeyes will fail if self inflicted wounds give the Damn Irish second chances.

I think that as long as OSU doesn't get in their own way, they will cover pretty comfortably.
The path for ND is to muck it up, make it an ugly 4 quarter game. Basically do what Michigan did and what Texas tried to. Can they do that? But when I look back to the Michigan loss and the Texas game, they were close because of self inflicted wounds and poor play calling. If they stay out of their own way, I just don't know how ND can hang.
One other thing, playing indoors on a fast track more often than not benefits OSU. Will the depth and team speed show up?

It was only poor play calling because it didn't work. The other team had something to do with that. I'm a Notre Dame fan. My head tells me the Irish get beat by at least 2 touchdowns. I'd feel good if they kept it close. But I also think Freeman is a better coach than Day, so I give the Irish a chance. The Georgia game is where they proved they could stack up athletically.

Well that call took balls.
They had to do something different. Another QB draw would have been nuts.

Credit to Ryan Day. I’ve been a very loud critic, but he did *exactly* what he needed to do to shake off that bizarre loss to Michigan.
They’ve been far and away the obviously best team in the nation since then.

Hearing how the players talked about Ryan Day this past week it's pretty clear he's the guy. This is just his first.

Good for Ryan Day.
In his postgame interview, he said he has a story to tell. Sounds like a good book in the making.
