From Antigo Wisc. I grew up near Antigo and the nearest thoroughbred is a long ways away.
Lucas was also a high school basketball coach. And a very close friend of Al McGuire's.

My favorite Lucas horse was Proud Citizen who finished second in the 2002 Derby- I had the triple and it was (is) the biggest score of my life.

D. Wayne Lukas, 89, is at home after being hospitalized in Louisville. A severe MRSA blood infection caused significant damage to the thoroughbred trainer's heart, digestive system and worsened preexisting chronic conditions, according to a statement from the Lukas family.

Made me some money over the years for sure. If my memory's right he was usually like a 40% winner at River Downs & Turfway.

Actually, going further, I think he was the trainer that made me start paying more attention to trainers when I went. No idea if he was a great trainer or if he just got the best horses but he was money.
