Is this the biggest season in IU football in.... forever?

The schedule doesn't break for them like it did last year, but they avoid OSU for the first time in forever. If they can go 8-4 or 9-3, they probably aren't playoff bound, but it would be a step in a direction saying we are legit moving forward.

Actually the Hoosiers were in a similar situation coming out of the Covid year. They went right back into the crapper.

Absolutely. Would love to see a repeat but would settle for 10-2!!!!!

If IU can handle business, I see them having 4 tossup/losses on the schedule. Illinois, Iowa, PSU and Oregon. I don't see them beating PSU, and who knows about Oregon. But Illinois and Iowa I think are pure toss up games, and will determine how IU's season goes. Win both and they will be in the playoff conversation, lose both and they are looking at a good IU season, but 8-4 overall.

A curb stomping of the Illini to kick things off with is what I am looking for to kick start my CFP aspirations.

Pete Thamel -

Kennesaw State QB Dexter Williams will be the starting quarterback and will debut against Wake Forest in the opener at Wake Forest on Aug. 29. He's a transfer from Georgia Southern and Indiana, where he spent 2020-23. Kennesaw plays at IU in Week 2.

The OL looks weak if the ourlads depth chart is accurate. Zen Michalski starting at RT. That guy is a MAC level tackle, will get lit up by big ten pass rushers. Good thing Mendoza can move around pretty well.

260 career snaps over four years at OSU. 158 last season, primarily in the Oregon and Nebraska games. So na he really didn't play at OSU.

IMO this is a pretty good trajectory for someone. He was a late add as a recruit, came in worked for a couple of years, got the opportunity to be the backup tackle, wasn't good enough and got hurt, then transferred to a place where he can play.

He isn't a starting caliber T at OSU, but probably can provide value to IU.

The Vols open vs Syracuse. I'm not comfortable that they'll win that one. I don't know what we've got this year. I'll have to look at what I see on the field

As for the SEC, they're requiring a P4 opponent in the non conference in their new format. It appears the B10 has no such requirement

“Adding a ninth SEC game underscores our universities’ commitment to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the nation,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. “This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance, and paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff.”

You crack me up sometimes.

It’s not a good year to criticize the Vols schedule. Their P4 non conference opponent was a Bowl winner last year, in blowout fashion. You can’t expect them to schedule 2 P4 non conference games. Hardly anybody does that

A more level headed response should be something to the effect of “yeah, it is a weak schedule for a P4 team. I had nothing to do with it but all we can do is play who’s on the schedule …go Hoosiers”. Bringing Tennessee into it was a reach to say the least. Believe me, I checked my Vols schedule before commenting. I know how things roll here

LOL. As I said, you crack me up sometimes. I am well aware of the Vols schedule. I always am. You should know that.

That being said IU plays as many P4 schools this year as UT does. The Hoosiers just don't play one one out of conference.

I must admit I ain't the happiest guy with my Hoosiers non-con schedule. And I haven't been for quite sometime. I miss playing UK every year. I miss Mizzou. Hopefully Cig changes this.

This isn't exactly an IU thought, but IU's non-conference schedule is terrible. But to be honest, for IU of the past decade it made sense, get three wins and you are half way to bowl eligibility.

While I am pumped to see OSU play Texas, the first game of the year isn't exactly the best spot. These teams will look totally different in Week 3 than they do in Week 1, and even more so in Week 10 than they do now. I would love to see some more standardization in CFB where Week 1 and 2 are more tune up games, than a banger of a week in week 3 prior to the conference schedule taking hold.

For what seemed forever IU used to have to play tOSU, Michigan, and Penn St. Add to that Sparty who was pretty decent. The Hoosiers had 4 losses before the season began. Now IU appears to have bounced up off the canvas and their schedule is being ridiculed.

I get what you are saying about week #1. And understand.

Could you imagine if the B1G and SEC got together and said, the first two weeks we are going to play non Power 4 teams. Then on the 3rd weekend we are going to play a SEC v B1G game. You could do it Thurs/Fri/Sat. A bye week the next week and then the season starts. That would create maybe the best week of college football until the playoff starts where teams are not exactly in terrible form.

Since that one play.

Monarchs have yet to snap the ball in Indiana territory today.

Indiana has held Old Dominion to 3.5 yards per play since the Monarchs' 75-yard touchdown to start the game. Over eight legitimate drives, Old Dominion has punted six times and been intercepted twice.

Since the one play, 75 yard touchdown drive to open the game, Old Dominion does not have a drive longer than 34 yards.

Pretty much gave up the 2 huge plays that were the Old Dominion entire offense. IU failed to capitalize in the redzone a bazillion times. The passing game needs work. Hope Mendoza was just nervous. Need to work on a bunch of things for conference play. All that being said it was kind of similar to our first game last year.

Looked very sound on all phases yesterday, sans the one blown coverage for the TD. Mendoza is easily the best QB they've had since Penix.

Ironic the score wasn't that much different than the Indiana State one. The game certainly felt as lopsided.

You had the feeling that if Gronowski had finished the game, Iowa would've won. Not that he was stellar or anything.

I know it was a conference road game and Iowa is a solid team, but IU did not seem well prepared on offense. Or they didn't seem to have a plan b. That's not going to work against Oregon so here's to hoping for some adjustments.

I don't expect them to win this game but it would be a hell of an exclamation point if they did. I would think they'd move up to #2 assuming OSU beats Illinois.

That said, a loss here wouldn't kill, especially if it's competitive. I think IU is better than Penn State but now that Franklin is playing for his job that game probably has become more difficult.

No matter what the outcome of the O game, I fully expect to go into State College after the Lions are crushed by tOSU. Wouldn't be surprised if Iowa beat them before the Bucknuts do.

That being said. This could be Big Game James' ultimate moment. He gets the Nits playing some ball and defeats the Bucknuts in Columbus and dispatches the 'Cats and Hawks along the way. There very well could be a CFP spot on the line.

Wasn't expecting it, but didn't not think they couldn't win. I was very concerned with all the 4th and long conversions Oregon made but otherwise, the defense was excellent.

Historic day for the program. And with PSU tanking, the path on paper appears pretty favorable though in many ways, though it'll probably become a lot harder with a target on their back.

Both Ohio State and Indiana have similar, and rather easy (imo) schedules left, share common opponents .... Wisconsin, Penn State, Purdue, UCLA.

Ohio State - Indiana B1G Championship game if it remains unchanged. Lots of football left though.

Cigs to stay.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/46617941/indiana-announces-new-8-year-93m-contract-coach-cignetti

Indiana has reached a new eight-year contract with Curt Cignetti, which will make him one of the highest-paid football coaches in the FBS with an annual average salary of about $11.6 million, the university announced Thursday.

Cignetti guided the Hoosiers to a 10-2 record and a surprising College Football Playoff appearance in his first season at the school in 2024. This season, the No. 3 Hoosiers are 6-0 heading into Saturday's game against Michigan State.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be a Hoosier, and I plan on retiring as a Hoosier,” Cignetti said in a video. “The way this state has embraced us and our success in football has meant more to me than anything else. I just wanted to get on camera and let you know that Curt Cignetti is going to work daily to make Indiana the best they can be.”

I feel like Brian Kelly said that about another Indiana school too, but for now it's a very good sign.

For the IU fans, is IU becoming a football school?

I mean Cigs wins, google him, but what he has done over the past two years has been beyond impressive. If you can win like Cigs has done, and can get paid handsomely for it, I think staying in Bloomington is far better than heading to Happy Valley.

I wonder if this is the type of job where the pressure isn't as high because once January rolls around most people are focused on basketball as opposed to football.

SunDeck

Maybe it depends on what happens with the BB program in the next 2-3 years, but I'd say for the most part, it's going to be hard to ever say IU's fan base likes football more. The basketball team hasn't been relevant nationally for a long time and yet Assembly Hall is basically always sold out. But who knows? This is all so new to IU fans and they are so accustomed to football mediocrity that actually going into the stadium after tailgating is just now starting to seem like an option. One thing is for sure, Mrs.Sundeck and I (not really football fans at all) are seriously considering renting our house out (10 minute walk to Nick's) for football weekends next year and using the money for mini vacations to our favorite cities.

It sounds like his offers came from Valparaiso, Ball State and Murray…far cry from Notre Dame or IU

What was it like last night? I was there in 84 when we beat UNC and that was the closest I ever got to campus pandemonium and why I will excuse Dan Dakich for every stupid thing he does during his lifetime. (IYKYK)

Schwarber backs Indiana at Peach Bowl, takes selfies with fans

Schwarber’s love for his alma mater has been on display throughout his pro career. He went back to campus in 2016 after the Cubs’ World Series win. In October 2024, he donned shoulder pads, an Indiana football jersey and an IU baseball helmet and served as the guest picker on ESPN’s “College Gameday” when the pregame show broadcast live from Bloomington, Ind.

Indiana QB Alberto Mendoza is entering the transfer portal, sources tell me and
@chris_hummer
.

Mendoza, the younger brother of Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, was IU’s backup QB this year. In limited action, was 18 of 24 for 286 yards with five TD passes. Also ran for 190 yards

I think a lot of people disagreed with it. What IU had going for them is that on 4th and 5, UM was defending the pass and it's hard to cover that AND a QB draw. The call kind of said everything there is to know about this team. Meticulous prep, trust the process, trust that the execution will follow.

Love this!

I think he saw how poorly his defense was playing in that second half and he had little faith they could stop Miami from scoring another touchdown, with only a 6 point lead. Definitely a ballsy move, but I’m very happy it worked. It was kind of odd though, because he was extremely conservative on that last drive of the 1st half, where I think Indiana could have gotten into field goal range. I didn’t mind the first down run, but why let all that time run off that clock and then throw the ball. Didn’t make sense to me, but the final results speak for themselves.

He’s definitely a legend now!

Yea, you’re probably right and it was probably Shanahans decisions on that possession. Cig is a perfectionist and the more I think about it, he probably was pissed. It was definitely nice to see a smile on his face as the game ended though.
