Archie helped them out a lot, but this defense might be really good. It didn't really feel to me like Texas could score even when they got down close to the goal line.

If that defense is what we're going to see this year from OSU, I'm not sure who can beat them. They replaced 8 starters and look like they could be even better. Sayin didn't put up the stats, but he was so impressive in his patience and poise. Not sure how else to say it other than he just had that look. He's going to grow into the job I believe. This team has all the potential to be as good as last year's team by the end of the season.

And Caleb Downs should be getting Heisman consideration. He's just on another level.

I'd let Sayin chuck it 25-30 times each of the next four weeks. I was impressed with his accuracy. He just needs the live game reps.

Downs kinda shows why safeties go unnoticed, unless they are making huge hits.

The opposing offense will have a play where they get 6 yards and Downs will calmly tackle the runner and limit it to that. However, if it was just about any other safety in the country that 6 yard gain against OSU would have been 20+ yards

Downs has this uncanny ability to make the tackle when it needs to be made. He isn't going to make the big splashy play, and is pretty mild mannered for a guy who has been the best safety in college for the past two years. But with him on D, it gives Patricia more flexibility in calling the defense. It also helps that the back 7 is pretty experienced and may be the best in the nation.

Glad to see that Buckeyes got some due respect in the polls. Winning their last 5 games, going back to last year is pretty darn impressive, when you look at who they played.

Offenses are generally behind the defenses this time of year, but that defense looked great regardless. If they continue to improve and Sayin improves with more reps, in the upcoming easier games, a repeat of last year is entirely possible.

Do you have a point or just like making wise cracks? Yes, the team that won the national championship was ranked third going into the Texas game and now is 1st, where they already should have been.

Being their first game, and against the #1 ranked team who supposedly has the #1 pick next April playing QB (lol), I thought the Bucks played a very conservative game. It was kinda worrying me towards the end (lol). You look at the stats for this game, and you'd think Texas won .... Total Yards Texas 336 OSU 203

The difference was a Texas turnover. The INT return to the Texas 32, and subsequent drive, made it 14-0 Bucks. But those two critical stops when Texas was inside our 10 yd line were awesome. Especially stuffing Manning in the 3Q on that QB sneak from the 1 yd line.

Buckeye score off the opening 2nd half kickoff. Aided by a questionable (but defendable) roughing the passer penalty.

But I feel like this is a Woody Hayes offense so far.

I agree. Sayin is managing the game, completing short to medium throws, they aren’t making him make tough throws, and they’re moved the ball well in the second half. He’s played better than the Texas game. And like you said, on the road in a tough stadium against a good defense.

The Gophers offense marched right down the field initially to start the game, got stopped 1st and goal, and had to setle for a FG. But I had warning flags going off in that initial drive, hoping OSU's defensive coordinator would adjust.

He did. ;)

What a defensive performance, and offensive exploson. Matt Patricia was one heck of a hire.

Roy Tucker
10-05-2025, 09:13 AM
OSU defense is looking really good. If I recall, there was rumblings about whether Patricia would be any good or not. So far, they’ve looked dominant. And Sayin continues to look good. I think coaches are getting more confidence in him and opening things up. I was glad to see Carnell Tate have a good game. I’d like to see more out of the ground game but I feel a little silly saying that when they have superstar wide receivers.

While I don't think Fickell is going to get it turned around, Wisconsin may be best off waiting another year to see if he can. There are already two openings that are clearly more attractive than Wisconsin (Penn State and Florida) and a couple more (Arkansas and OK State) that are at least on the same tier... and we are still in October. Plus I believe his buyout is substantial.

Has Wisconsin fallen that much that Arkansas and Ok State are in their tier?

If they fire Fickell it will be after the Oregon game. But I would imagine that if they do let him go this season, it will be with someone in mind already.

Losing to Ohio State by 5 TDs doesn’t generally get coaches fired. It’s the other games that matter

That said, I do think they should give Fickell another year

Not to get hyperbolic, but Wiscy this year had:

@Bama
Maryland
@Michigan
Iowa
Ohio State
@Oregon
Washington
@IU
Illinois
@Minnesota

That is a brutal schedule, there may only be one team in the nation that could run through that gauntlet with a chance to be a playoff contender.

I do think Fickell "should" get another year, but I can't see it happening. He was brought in to bring Wiscy into the new era of college football, but it just hasn't happened. His first OC was bad, he fired him and brought in someone else. The portal QB add's haven't worked out. In reality, nothing has worked out for Fickell during his tenure at Wiscy. The question becomes, is his buyout prohibitive or is another losing season more prohibitive?

Their 2026 schedule is more manageable. They do have ND at Lambo and at Pitt in the non conference. They miss OSU, OU, and Michigan in B1G play. I could see them going 9-3 OR 8-4 if they have a bounce back year, but I don't know if Fickell can get them there. He is going to go 2-10 this season, probably defeated in B1G play.

Not nobody, but the schedule, while looking tough initially, doesn’t look that way now. I was amped when they beat Texas but the longhorns, and Manning in particular, are underwhelming. They won’t be tested again truly until they would get to the Big 10 championship and, most likely, Indiana. Of course, there is TTUN, but I think Day gets that monkey off his back this season.

That’s a problem because a team that has a great QB and a pass rush pose an issue, imo. The OSU pass rush leaves time to throw, although the secondary is great. Also, with the running game not truly established, handling a pass rush top tier team is a challenge. They need to pick a go-to back and it looks like they are still trying to figure it out.

Yeah, because it’s up North, “Meatchicken” could be a stumbling block, but nope I don’t think so this time. Day got a huge thing done in running the gauntlet last year to the title. I believe he’s getting off the schneid.

Several medium completions for Penn State on their 3rd drive. The pass rush just is not where it needs to be - a couple of hurries but no sacks. I don’t care how good the secondary is, too much time to a good QB (which the Nittany Lions do not have) is not good.

I think Penn State threw some wrinkles into their offense in the first half that they hadn’t shown before. I’m guessing that at the half, OSU made some adjustments and then the second half was a whole different ballgame.

Sayin is lucky to have Smith and Tate to throw to. Both are NFL first round draft picks. Smith might be the top pick. Glad to see the running game assert itself in the 4th quarter.

Roy Tucker
11-08-2025, 06:04 PM
I think Ohio State is looking to shorten games with long methodical drives. Saving wear and tear on their players with an eye to the playoffs.

I’m shocked when Sayin misses a pass.

I like how OSU was just like “meh we don’t need Tate today, take a break bruh” and quietly beat Purdue by 24. Would have covered but put all the backups in during garbage time.

This team reminds me of 2023 Michigan.

Roy Tucker
11-22-2025, 07:21 PM
Buckeyes play without Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. The offense struggled early but eventually found its rhythm. Lincoln Kienholz played some snaps and OSU continues to play for the post season with a slow pace.

Now it’s Michigan week.

JBChance
11-23-2025, 01:04 PM
Not having your two top receivers, which are among the best in college football, certainly changes the offense. What a pickup in Klare for this season - he’s been phenomenal.

Still an easy game for the bucks, but we won’t be able to run on TTUN like Rutgers. definitely need one or both of our top guys back.

On the defensive side, I still question the pass rush. Curry has been good, but not dominant and Jackson either took the game off or was neutralized. They have had good moments but are far from consistent and that is going to show up vs top opponents.

The loss to Michigan stung for about a few days. The Natty has stayed with me for the entire year. I still remember fondly the 2002 and 2014 championships.

Natty's >>>> victories over Michigan. Sure I want them to beat Michigan, and it will suck if they don't, but titles hang forever.

I think the Big 10 makes up the conference schedules for the teams based on all kinds of guidelines.

And then OSU has 3 non conference games. They make one be a big name team. This year is Texas and @Texas in 2026 and home and away games with Alabama in 2027 and 2028. The other two are non conference games are cupcakes (for OSU). I think they have a 2 game series with Georgia in 2030 and 2031.

I don't know what to think of IU. And its not to say what they done isn't impressive, because they have absolutely handled business this season. Their three closest games were against probably the three most talented teams they played. That said Oregon was probably the best win of the year by anybody, so that should help.

I think IU's biggest issue in this game is how do they handle OSU's athletes, indoors on a fast track? Its where OSU has had the advantage for years and years over most teams in CFB.

The motivation angle I find interesting, OSU hasn't won the B1G since 2020, IU has never. But how important is the B1G with the playoff looming? With a 1st round bye assured, how will both handle this game?

Not gonna lie, I didn't see IU leading in the 2nd half. Two amazing defenses in this one.

Was Sayin’s knee down on 4th down?

Sayin being a little exposed tonight. He hasn't faced much pressure this year. He needs some work in that area.

Sayin hasn't been great at sneaks. Not sure i would have left it to him there.

It doesn’t shock me. They haven’t played a really good team yet this year till now. Sayin looks a little shook.

He was actually great at sneaks against Michigan just last week

That 3rd down play call was the real crime. No idea what that thought process was.

Agreed, on other hand they were inches away from converting and then prob scoring a TD.

Seems like they’ve been a half second late several times tonight.

How a hold doesn’t get called there, I don’t know.

I guess holding just isn’t a flag tonight.

Wasn’t the lack of holding calls a theme last year too?

Yeah. I’m not sure why or how. Seems consistent though.

OSU starts deep in their own half of the field.

Refs must have thought it was the Chiefs. That's one of the most blatant holds not to get called I've ever seen.

Bah. Choke job by Fielding on the tying FG.

Buckeyes are in trouble.

Piss poor play calling. Two third and ones on last two drives, throwing the ball

Game over. How do you miss from that close?

I will say Indiana is for real. They’ve played very well.

Michigan was pretty light work, I don't expect Indiana to be much different.

Nope, dummy.

I made too much out of that close Penn State win for Indiana, they're legit. Great defense.

Weird game, but I honestly don't think it has a lot of bearing on the playoffs for Ohio State.

Feels a lot like the Michigan game last year.

Hopefully the end result on the season will be the same.

Not sure why Day is playing for OT in that scenario to begin with - hopefully he'll learn a lesson there.
