With his passing, and also Brodies, it shows my age just as much since I grew up with these guys! They were some great ones. Especially Sonny with the Redskins.

I loved those old school quarterbacks. They were tough as nails. My personal favorite(played til he was how old... 73? )

I’m dating myself here. I saw Sonny Jurgenson play when he was with the Philadelphia Eagles against the Browns at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Lou Groza was my dad’s insurance agent and we got good tickets from him.
RIP Sonny.
I loved those old school quarterbacks. They were tough as nails.
They took a beating. But the game back then was very violent on EVERYONE. I remember film and pictures of players after a game bloodied, their uniforms stained with blood, missing teeth.
Guys like Starr, Unitas, and Namath had their careers shortened because of all the abuse they took. Especially their knees. Others to be mentioned ... Staubach, Gabriel, Dawson, Blanda. LaMonica, Tittle.
Their abuse led to so many of the protection rules we see today. Now, if you look cross-eyed at a QB you get a flag. But QBs today are making far more then their predecessors. And I do agree with the concussion protocols.
I still remember Gayle Sayers knee injury where Detroit's Alexander bent his knee in the oppositie direction and tore out every ligament. And then there was Joe Theismann's injury on the flea flicker play, taken out by Lawrence Taylor. After the play Taylor is seen waving to the sidelines to bring help.

Jurgensen went from being a legendary QB to being a legendary radio broadcaster as part of the beloved Sonny, Sam, and Frank (Jurgensen, Huff, Herzog) team in Washington. His playing career was a little before my time but I’ve always enjoyed watching the old NFL Films highlights of Skins teams from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Kind of incredible that he lived to 91 with the physical punishment he took in the NFL. Maybe it was the booze and cigars that kept him going. :)
RIP to one of the all time DC sports greats. What a life.

He was a moderator and got caught up in some crappy behavior and subsequent politics from some posters. He got sick of the whole thing and dropped off the board. We used to PM and I have his email if you need it. He’s a good guy and I was sorry to see him go. I tried to talk him out of it but his mind was made up.

He is a good guy. His mistake was going over to the political side.

It’s been a rough stretch for former Washington players, their families, and fans.
Jurgensen died on Feb. 6. HOF legend.
The same day, former CB Barry Wilburn died tragically in a house fire at age 62. In 1987, Wilburn had 12 INTs in 15 games counting the playoffs, including 2 against the Broncos in Washington’s 42-10 Super Bowl XXII win.
Then 9 days later on Feb. 15, former offensive lineman Tre’ Johnson died suddenly during a family trip at age 54. Johnson was a solid guard for 9 years, earning 2nd team All-Pro in 1999, then went on to become a history teacher after his NFL career ended.
Heartbreaking stuff. RIP to them all.
