CHICAGO - East Carolina senior DH/OF Ryan Jones has been named as one of 10 finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to collegiate baseball's top player. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, which works in association with the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce on the award, released the list of the 10 finalists for the trophy today. The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of voting. The 2004 winner will be announced at the College World Series in Omaha on Friday, June 18 at 9:30 a.m. CDT.

Jones was named the 2004 Conference USA Player of the Year after hitting .409 heading into the conference tournament and finishing league play hitting .407 in conference. Currently, he leads the nation in slugging percentage (.834) with 46 of his 80 hits serving as extra-base hits including 24 doubles, four triples and 18 home runs for a team-high 66 RBI. Jones posted 24 multiple hit games and 14 multiple RBI games.

On Thursday, Jones was named a first team All-American by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball.

The other finalists include: Rutgers P Jeff Frazier, Nebraska 3B Alex Gordon, Ole Miss 1B/P Stephen Head, Texas P J.P. Howell, Rice P Philip Humber, Virginia UT Joe Koshansky, Stanford 2B Jed Lowrie, South Carolina C Landon Powell and Long Beach State P Jered Weaver.

The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award.

Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.

Here is his writeup:

Senior 3B Matt Levering (#25, out of Chatfield HS) has been named First Team All-American by the ABCA. Also a First Team All-West Region (by both the ABCA and the NCBWA) and First Team All-RMAC honoree this spring, Levering was also selected as the 2004 RMAC Player of the Year. Levering, who was named to the this year's All-RMAC Tournament Team, finished the 2004 campaign hitting .507 with 107 hits, 71 runs, 22 doubles, eight triples, 15 HR, 87 RBI and a .900 slugging %. The Regis baseball team finished the season at 32-18 overall (16-8 RMAC).

The drafting team retains rights until next year's draft unless the player goes to a 4-year college. So he could play in the Cape Cod League, independent leagues, Mexican league, go to a junior college, work independently, rehab, whatever while the organization continues to negotiate. The most common route is to go to a junior college, see if they can get stronger or healthier or show something to indicate they're worth signing, and then either do a deal or don't.

Calvin Medlock went the Juco route after being selected out of HS. In a lot of cases they've probably indicated to teams that they're not enrolling in a four-year college.

The other reason to take a high schooler this late is if he's a big talent and you think you might be able to woo him with an unexpected bonus should your budget allow it.

6:20 PM ET: It Doesn't Only Happen In Your Fantasy Draft
The Cubs announced their 49th round pick as Christopher Siewart. Following a pause, the commissioner's office informed the Cubs that the Southern Nevada CC shortstop was previously selected (Houston, 45th).

Dang - with a scouting Report like that, this guy must a third eye, or he's a definite college guy.

Belcher was selected in round 40 or so last year out of HS. They gave him a decent pile of cash to sign. Curtis was the one to lure away though-well D'alessio of course whom wanted 400k.

I want to say they signed 25.

any Brackman sightings?

Mueller:Smooth, projectable righty threw in the mid-80s over the summer of 2003. Good athlete with "plus" arm-action.

Coello is intriguing-6'5" 210. 19th best HS C. Signed with S. Florida.
a power/power catcher, with a lithe, 6-5 frame. From the right side of the plate, he has light-tower power. The state of Florida is loaded with HS catchers for 2003 and Coello might be the sleeper.

Nichols is a strong verbal to Arizona.

The incompetence of this organization is evident.

Drafting a HS player in round 50 instead of a collegiate pitcher. Idiots! This franchise is doomed :mhcky21:

More on Coello (this is from last year). Coello is an interesting player with some of the biggest power potential in the showcase. He is big at 6'5 and has a very athletic body with a large shoulder girdle. So much room is there for him to add 30 or more pounds projects him best at an infield corner. He popped 1.95 to 2.0 in the skills, 2.10 in the game and his arm is above average so he might end up at 3B. At 1B he showed a good glove and plus arm. His best tool is his powerful bat. He generated a lot of bat-speed and really whips the head of his bat through the zone, late and hard. He showed topspin on many of his hits and if he let the ball get back in the zone further he might get more lift to compliment that power. We liked the look of that powerful swing. He could be a very high draft pick.

The last time I saw Monsignor Pace right-hander Robert Palencia he came in relief to beat Sarasota High School in extra innings. That night he dominated with an outstanding slider and curve ball to go with his 92 mph fastball. Today, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed pitcher, topped out at 89 mph and threw in the 86-88 range. He also throws a two-seamer in the 85-86 range. He showed a different delivery with his left foot wide open on the rubber as a timing mechanism. He throws the ball from the 11 o’clock arm slot with consistency.

Brad Jarrell has signed with a JC so he is likely a draft and follow. Also this from teamone:

Ben Price SS Terra Linda HS (CA)
Smooth fielding SS, but the bat has a ways to go. This is a draft and follow guy, but an interesting pick, because most of his time has been spent playing basketball. He may really progress quickly as a baseball only guy.
--------------------

Let's see if they can at least improve on getting some of the higher ceiling guys signed this time.

One last report on HS CF Ecker. He has signed to play FB with Nevada-Reno but is greyshirting his FR year in order to play club BB and look for a school that will let him play both sports, the NR coach frowns on it. This is the reason the Reds could do a draft and follow as Teamone suggests:

As athletic as they come. Left hand hitter with four usable tools right now, very similar to Luis Gonzalez of the Diamondbacks. Expect to the Reds to work to sign him as the summer goes on, or to draft and follow. Great pick by the Reds, this kid was seriously under the radar.

According to BA Buck's "a candidate to be a late-round, draft-and-follow pick." Probably headed to a Juco.
