So pedro, did you find RedsZone first and tell woy about it or was it the other way around?

woy was first by a long shot, i read redszone for a long time (almost 2 years) before i ever posted. lot's of times i don't have a lot to say on the baseball side, i think woy, m2, steelsd, raisor and the rest of the sabre crowd spend so much time writing thoughough analysis that all i'd have to say is "uh... yeah, me too!"

sometimes i think that woy is like the noise made by the tree in the forest. w/out baseball he might not really exist.

woy came out here first, about the same time as my sister. parents followed soon after, then me. pretty much a full family migration, although we left crazy older sister back east where she belongs :)

woy's 6 years older than me and he probably did get the looks in the family. he's got the dark features that made him the swarthy envy of many a young girl in high school. he also, as many of you might know, has a way with words that probably made many a young man in high school want to crack his head open. so he's got that going for him too. :p:

Bad stuff from work:

I was accused by a co-worker of doing something wrong today. My supervisor has not said one word to me. BUT if I’m doing something wrong, I want to know what it is. Supervisor is out until Monday, so I just have to wait for clarification.

I’d really like to call in sick tomorrow, but I can’t do that. Unless I catch what lgj has or something.

Truth is, in my mind, what I did was absolutely right, and I’ll stand by it until my supervisor can explain to me WHY I was wrong. I opened a BI claim in response to a phone call from an atty who said his client was injured and assigned it to a BI adjuster. And I was wrong because? All is hear is that I should have just opened collision and let fast track handle.

Didn’t cost the company a penny … claim was denied anyway since the policy was not in effect. Didn’t create any extra work … someone had to respond to the atty anyway. No lives were lost. Not a big deal, really, but this co-worker is making it a big deal.

Oh, and someone from our IS dept was tampering with my computer today while I was at lunch. I’m a little worried that they accessed a couple of files I have on my personal storage space. Nothing too damaging, just typed in a few thoughts expressing my boredom and frustration. And I stand by that. I’d just rather not have to explain.

They were there to update something, but I have no idea what.

Hopefully, I'll be able to give notice soon.

Now for the after work ... stopped by the health club ... they were supposed to call me to set up an intro session. I don't want to get started without a plan, since I'm in pretty bad shape right now. Anyway, on my way I got a call from the gal who is setting up the testing and intro interview following my phone interview.

So, on Dec 2, I have to take a math test (calculating area, figuring percents, converting from mm to in and vice versa. Oh, and inches to feet too!), essay test (How I would respond to client's e-mail), and a typing test. The last worries me the most, since I've never actually been tested.

Job requires 40 wpm, and I think I can handle that, but it depends on how the test is given. I make a lot of mistakes, but I usually catch them as I go along.

Anyway, Dec 1, I get my blood test results and find out if I'm going to live. Dec 2, I take these tests and have a face to face interview. Dec 3, I have an ear doctor appt. I'd cancel or postpone the ear doctor, but I've put it off too long. I've already asked off the mornings of the 1st and 3rd. Now, do I ask just the morning off for the second? or the entire day? Wait ... maybe I can reschedule the ear dr for the afternoon of the 2nd, and take the whole day off. I'll be done with the interview/test by 11am.

The elevators in my building are possessed. One of them doesn't recognize the 14th floor (where I work). The elevator always says it's the 15th floor when it's on the 14th floor which is really the 13th floor.

I type everyday too. Just short pieces ... filing in datafields while I'm on the phone. I'm not fast at anything. And I've never really been trained or tested, so that bothers me a bit. I have a lot riding on this, and typing isn't really a big part of the job. They only are asking for 40wpm, though, and I think I can handle that.

Most of the time, the worst of it goes north of us. With these fronts, anyway. Our flooding generally comes in the spring when the cool fronts that are still coming down meet the warm fronts from the gulf, and stall right over us. That's still mosting torrential rain.

Hope it settles down for you.

Every day since Sunday, the carrier has double-bagged the paper on rainy mornings this week. Getting that Sunday paper soaked is nooo fun, though. :(

I don't think I mentioned on Sunday that I left part of the paper in the oven too long at too high a temperature and it caught fire briefly. It's a good thing I had left the oven door open or I might have damaged the oven!

As Steve Stone might say. "All of you little leaguers watching at home should take note of this. 300 degrees is too high a temperature to dry out your newspaper in the oven." :)

I'm kind of stuck for now. This club is in the building I currently work in, and our membership is being deducted from my paycheck. And there's a $50 cancellation fee if I cancel before a year. I didn't have to pay a registration fee.

If I get the new job, I'll be transferring my membership to the main site of the club, which costs a little more, but I think I'll have better service.

I was gone a lot longer than I thought I would be when I left this afternoon. Whew! Thankfully, I only had 6 pages to catch up on here though. :)

Bridget Jones was much better than I thought it would be. I was expecting crap, and I would say it was about average. Not as good as the first, but not bad either. After the movie went to the bar with my friend ... nothing like having a beer at 3:30 on a Wednesday afternoon!! :gac:

Then I drove up to my granparents' house, where we had a trial-run Thanksgiving dinner. Grandma got a turkey fryer and wanted to test it before the actual holiday. So she cooked a turkey breast in it, and we had mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, green beans, etc. It was sooo good. Well, actually, I wasn't too fond of the turkey, but everything else was wonderful. And I got a huge plate of leftovers, and a huge bag of pistachios!!

Krono, your job search difficulties remind me a lot of a version of writers block. It seems like your heart is in the right place, but something seems to be stopping you from taking action.

It's like a wall in front of you that you can't seem to get around. It's not that you have bad intentions, you just seem stuck to me, and whatever method you're trying just isn't working.

I still think you need to personify the whole concept, and get mad at the "wall". See it as a physical entity that is keeping you from what you desire. This may help you focus your energy on defeating the "wall". I know this sounds like a two part Dr.Phil episode, but you mentioned earlier that you were able to motivate yourself with anger sometimes, and that is exactly what I think you need to do here.

Get mad at the freakin' wall. It's your enemy. Kick it's ass.

Ok, Red Leader just made a total :censored: out of himself. I just went to Subway for lunch. I walk in and there was only one other customer in there besides me. I looked at the lady that was at the counter. Pretty, older lady. I looked at her again. She looked familiar. She looked dead at me. I looked back at her and said "Aren't you Olivia Newton John". She smiled and said "yes, I am". I then said "what are you doing in Dayton?" She said that she was playing a concert at the Schuster Center tonight (which is right across the street from my work). Then, I said it. The dumbest thing I could say. I said "I've always loved your accent, and my sister made me watch Grease about 100,000 times when we were growing up". :help: . She smiled and said that was nice to say. Luckily, she got her sandwich and walked out before I ordered so I didn't embarass myself further. She said bye to me while leaving, though.

Coolness.

That stinks Sandy, especially the tampering part, sounds like a crap place to be :dflynn:

Good luck with all that Sandy :)

40wpm? no trouble at all..you can do it all :D

Just remembered something I've been meaning to tell you all for a while.

The elevators in my building are possessed. One of them doesn't recognize the 14th floor (where I work). The elevator always says it's the 15th floor when it's on the 14th floor which is really the 13th floor.

Another one closes the doors rather quickly ... and I have bruises to prove it.

One time, the elevator went all the way to our floor ... and before the door opened, it returned to the ground floor.

Kind of creepy, huh?

Why don't you ask your pastor to place an ad in the bulletin that you will do odd jobs ... set up a computer for a fee, show a new user how to get started. Go to their office and help catch up/file etc. Address and mail Christmas cards.

Or ask the gal that works for the pizza place if she needs help in the kitchen ... prep work/ maybe helping to make pizzas.

Not a long term solution, I know, but it might get you jump started.

(Also: My grandfather told one of the crudest jokes I have ever heard. EVER. I couldn't believe he told it to us!! And my 13-year-old brother was sitting there too!! )

Are you one of those people conditioned by the unstated but undeniable 80 MPH minimum speed limit on the thruway through Buffalo? That is truly the fastest traffic I have ever been in. Faster than Houston, even... and that's saying something.

Actually, I'm one of those people who was used to the 55 mph speed limit and always drove 62. (7 miles over the speed limit was rumored to be the limit at which a cop would not pull you over.)

Now that it's 65 ..... I drive about 68.

Not in lake effect snow though. :scared:

BTW, I haven't witnessed that 80 mph phenomenon in Buffalo. I have in Cleveland and in Kentucky. Does Kentucky even have highway patrol? The semis go 100.

Good times, funny that the little things remind of you certain places.
For those that don't know ... and care ... Pete the Beak was created for a water conservation campaign ... encouraging residents to "Beat the Peak" of water usage by watering only every other day, and never watering 4pm-8pm. It was a jingle, so it was easy to remember.

There were ads on tv with someone dressed as Pete the Beak dancing around. A local music group was in one too.

Now, in the summer, the weatherfolks always reminded us to stay indoors between the hours of 10am and 4pm if possible. And it we MUST go out, to not stay out more than 20 minutes at a time.

Actually, once I get things running, I'll have HOURS between steps. I'm thinking of leaving work and coming back in in the middle of the night for the next step.

Sounds like fun :help:

I wonder, are IHOP's truly international?

Sandy, I very much hope your job situation gets resolved. It's starting to sound all pretty funky.

TC, I talk to myself in hallway too. Sometimes it's just a mutter.

Actually, I carry a little recorder around with me to record thoughts as I have them. I get struck by ideas at odd times and much of my job is ideas (I do near horizon/advanced technology so I'm supposed to be filing patents, intellectual property, etc.). Ideas are elusive little buggers and sometimes they come and go before I know it.

I will do the best I can, which is all that I can do. They are bringing in quite a few people, and I think there is only one position open right now. Truth is, I think they would like to have someone with more industrial experience.

But, all I can do is my best, right? In this case, though I really want this job, rejection doesn't necessarily mean failure.

All of the psych majors that I work with and I actually had a discussion about talking to yourself. We came to the conclusion of the following:

1.) At least it's a conversation that you're always interested in.
2.) At least it's always conversation with someone you feel is intelligent.

I gesture when I'm walking since I'm talking to myself in my head.

I should clarify ... the tampering didn't only happen to me. They are doing it to everybody sooner or later. And the script they are running takes about an hour, so they do it at lunch.

Still, the WAY they do it makes me think of spying. I used to think I wanted to move to that dept, but it seems too much like spying to me.

In the meantime, GM Brian Cashman faces a harsh winter, admitting this is the least flexibility he's ever had with his roster in seven years -- catcher Jorge Posada is his best and only trade chip unless you're prepared to give up on Javier Vazquez -- while facing the enormous task of trying to rebuild his rotation again without any help from the minor leagues.

The semis go 100.I haven't been to Buffalo in gosh, 15 years now, but it was certainly that way back then. I think the thruway speed limit was 65 and the limit in the city there was 55, so traveling at 80 was pretty absurd.

Fortunately, I was never there during a lake effect snow. I drove in a terrible LE snowstorm between Erie and Ashtabula once, though. Drove verry slowwly... and fortunately, I was in a car with great tires. Used up all of my washer fluid about 2/3 of the way through that stretch, which heightened the drama greatly until I found an exit with a gas station. My enthusiasm for the trip exceeded my common sense back then. :thumbdown

Krono, a couple of weeks of living and driving in lake-effect snow country would either improve your winter driving skills or introduce you to the world of auto body shops and insurance claims. ;)

I got a ticket for 84 on the thruway back when it was 55. Luckily my dad got it thrown out or I could have lost my license for awhile.

Time to share my Upstate NY driving experiences. I bet you guys can't wait!! ;)

1. I never got a speeding ticket in that state, and I drove on the thruway quite often. I agree it was a speed fest. Had to go at least 80 just to keep up with everyone.

2. My first winter in Syracuse really opened my eyes to the term "lake-effect snow." WOW. Coming from Ohio, where a few inches can shut down the city, it sure was something to see a few feet of snow fall at one time. And then the streets were cleared off, and everyone went on about their business. Used to amaze me.

3. I did not have a 4x4 vehicle, but the other drives who did kinda scared me. They would zoom past me on the highway, while I was trying my best to keep my Chrysler Lebaron convertible on the road.

4. When I moved to Ithaca, I realized that even though Syracuse gets more snow, they were much better at removing it than Ithaca was. I lived 8 miles from work, and there were many nights when it took me an hour to get home. Driving home from work consisted of driving 5 miles up one hill. It was a huge hill, in that it was a very long and steady incline. I could only go fast enough to keep the car moving; if I went faster, I'd lose control.

5. There were tons of debates while I lived in Ithaca about whether salt should be used on the roads, because it's bad for cars and the environment. The city actually passed some kind of law that a half sand-half salt mix had to be used on most streets. (There was also a huge debate about whether fluoride should be put in the water. A few years after I moved there, a fluoride issue made it onto the ballot, and it was defeated. No fluoride for Ithaca!)

6. I miss Ithaca and its liberal ways. Didn't realize how good I had it there until I moved back to Ohio. ;) Ithaca even had it's own currency! Called Ithaca Hours. Very cool town.

They probably didn't want a foreign substance introduced into their precious bodily fluids. ;)

It was something along the lines of "We don't want the government medicating us." A lot of people didn't trust fluoride, either ... they didn't think it was all that beneficial. And the city already offered free fluoride tablets to anyone who wanted them, so most people thought that was enough.

I thought it was a fascinating debate, to be honest. Lots of scientific evidence put forth by both sides.

As for work ... well, hopefully it will fly between now and 7 and you'll be out of there before you know it! :)

Good for you Rosie!!

And the Clinton Book is a great read, long, but worth it, IMO.
It was my turn to pick for book club. I picked the Clinton book.

I figured nobody in our club would ever read it (staunch Republican lot). Boy did I catch a lot of grief. Particulalrly from my wife. I figured it would make for interesting conversation. Ho-ho :mhcky21:

My grandma said she flew through it. (I find it so cute that she's such a big Clinton fan ... most people would think she is the exact opposite on the political spectrum.) I'm not going to be able to start reading it for a while though, since two very long history books are now occupying my reading time. Guns, Germs and Steel (still) and Killing Dragons, by Fergus Fleming, which is such a cool name. It's a history of the Alps and those who've climbed them.

I got a ticket for 84 on the thruway back when it was 55. Luckily my dad got it thrown out or I could have lost my license for awhile.

And driving in lake effect snow sucks - thats why I bought a 4x4 when I lived in Syracuse. But even the 4x4 doesn't protect you against other drivers.Speed enforcement on the thruway seemed fairly lax when I was there, but civilization was fairly limited between Buffalo and Rochester and Syracuse, so there wasn't much to slow you down. It really was a well-maintained road, considering the amount of punishment it was getting every winter.

I didn't have much trouble driving in Syracuse, my Grand Am with the wide tires held its own in the snow. My apartment was at the top of a hill, so I was judicious about when I left with the car. The one time the snow was so deep that I couldn't get up the hill, I just parked overnight in a hotel parking garage and trudged a few blocks up the hills to get back to my place.

Was General Jack D. Ripper one of the anti-flouridation advocates? ;)

There seems to be quite a lot of us here who've lived in upstate NY. Me, Puffy, Unassisted, TC ... anyone else?

I run into people all the time who've lived in upstate NY. Quite a few people at work, and quite a few friends. It's random, really.
