Or, like Woody Allen said to Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall";

"A relationship is like a shark. It has to keep moving forward to stay alive. What we have here is a dead shark".

Ummmmm, roy - I believe that quote belongs in the TV & Movie Quote thread. I don't mean to sound paternal and all, but I felt I needed to point that out.

Last night on Comedy Central they played the Cow Days episode of South Park. For those of you not familiar with that episode it is the one where Shenanigans originated, "Shenanigans has been declared, everybody grab your brooms" and the one where Cartman falls off a bull and bumps his head and then believes he is a Vietnamese prostitute named Ming Li.

Great episode!

Q:What are stem cells?

A:Stem cells, as everybody knows, are tiny cells from which all other cells derive. Think of stem cells as people before they go off to college, rack up an elephant's rectum worth of student loans, get stuck working as an accountant, and ultimately end up developing a raging case of alcoholism to cancel out the continuous misery caused by unwanted children and a nagging spouse. Stem cells don't hate themselves, so they are more pure and useful than regular cells.

Q: Why are stem cells sacred?

A: Embryonic stem cells can come from only one source: babies. Embryonic stem cells come from tossing infants into giant meat grinders and collecting the results in special scientific buckets. Actually, they come a lump of cells that could have grown into a baby if not for science intervening without the express written consent of God.

Many also fear that stem cell research could lead to scientific breakthroughs that would enable gay people to have sex, thus making the issue all the more controversial and important to bog down with needless debate.

I had a conversation with Boy yesterday. He got to see Santa. I tried to dig around in his head a bit.

Me: So, what did you ask Santa for for Christmas?

Boy: Presents.

Me: What kind of presents?

Boy: Big ones

Boy after more thought: and little ones.

Me not giving up: What kind of big and small presents.

Boy: Big cars.

Me: more prompting.....

Boy: Little cars.

Me: and?

Boy: big trains and little trains.

Me: Anything else?

Boy: I don't want any furniture. No furniture!

Me: How about some clothes?

Boy: lots of underwears.

So, that's it. The boy's list is complete. Various sized cars and trains and underwear. :MandJ:

BTW: Teamsters ..... if you're out there. I didn't get anything "train" this year. Oops.

It's actually Dennis Hopper who gives the speech, as he tries to get Walken to kill him quickly instead of slowly torturing him to find out where his son is.

I saw them in a little club up in Dayton a couple times. I wish I could remember he name of that place. Saw Black Flag, X, Husker Du, Toxic Reasons, DOA, Dementia Praecox, Dead Kennedys, Violent Femmes, Circle Jerks, etc etc. I kinda lost my mind for a while and lived on the edge. But it was fun. In an out of control kind of way. I also pretty well destroyed the hearing in my right ear.
When speaking of the over, oh say, 30 (or 40) crowd on this thread - Roy is much, much cooler than me. Much.

But I suppose you all already knew that.

I have stayed completely out of the "when did you choose to be hetrosexual thread" save for a few joke and runs.

But I am still amazed at some of the responses, thats all I'm sayin'
I wanted to respond to the question but it didn't seem to fit anywhere.

btw, we were playing a tackle football game in our backyard when I was in the 7th grade. Like most things then, they were co-ed because some of the girls in the neighborhood could kick some serious booty. Roy was on defense and went wide to tackle Mary Adams (one of the famous Adams girls, a nice Catholic family who lived across the street from us and had 5 bootilicious girls). Mary was, uh, mature for her age with pleasing results. But I didn't know that. Yet.

Roy had good form, grabbed her around the hips, brought her down, and fell right on top of her. Roy looked down at her. She looked up at Roy. A funny feeling came over Roy. Roy's body had a what I now know is a natural reaction. Her eyes got big. Roy turned beet red. We both jumped up and went on like nothing happened.

However, girls would forever be something different to Roy. What that difference is, Roy still is unsure. But he knows he likes them better in that way than the alternative.

The next summer, Mary would be the first girl Roy would get to second base on. But that's a story for a different time.

For your edification, Puffy:

NEW YORK, (Reuters) -- When supermodel Heidi Klum decided to write a book, she didn't want it to be just a picture book. She wanted to offer some words of wisdom.

Of course the book, "Heidi Klum's body of knowledge," does have pictures -- 400 of them to be precise, including a number of nude shots and plenty of the German temptress clad in the underwear brand that launched her on the way to super-stardom.

But that's not the point of the book.

Among eight "rules of model behavior" Klum outlines are such maxims as "You have to want it, baby" and "Have a blast while it lasts." And there are tips on getting ahead at work and getting better sex -- Heidi's advice: "Become the fantasy."

Random survey question of the day:

If you're salaried, nevermind. But for those who are paid hourly at work, does your work day consist of 7.5 hours or 8 hours? i.e., are you at work for 8 hours with a half hour break, or are you at work for 9 hours with an hour break? Or is your schedule something different altogether?

I ask because I'm starting to get annoyed with how my work days are shaping up. Technically, I am supposed to work for 8 hours, with an hour break in the middle. So if I go in at 4 p.m., I would be on dinner break from 6-7, then 1 a.m. is my quitting time. But lately it's been go in at 4 p.m., eat dinner at my desk, maybe take 20 minutes to go to Starbucks, then leave work at 1:30 a.m.

Which means work is getting "free" work out of me, which I don't like AT ALL. Like last Friday, I was at work from 4 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., with no dinner break. I don't know what to do about it. :help:

I often have time at work when I'm not really doing anything either. But I don't see that as my problem. It's not like there's work I could be doing, and instead of doing it I'm goofing off. There just literally isn't anything to do.

The way I see it, I'm paid to work 8 hours a day. If they don't have work for me to do for 8 hours, not my problem. It is my problem when there is work that takes more than 8 hours to do and I'm not getting paid for the extra time I have to be there.

If that makes any sense. :)

Which I know doesn't sound like much, but when you combine it with the fact that I'm not getting a dinner break either, I end up working for 9.5 hours a day (4 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.) And that is not sitting well with me.

I think part of the reason this is really bothering me is that it's happening nearly every night. If it were just here and there, I wouldn't really care.

Another thing is the reason I'm there so late ... which, honestly, is because other people are slow and/or don't know what they're doing. Like I have "wait" for someone to do something or finish something before I can leave, and let me tell you: That person is NEVER in a hurry.

I don't know. I'm afraid if I say something about it, I'm going to be looked down on as "not being dedicated to my job." (Which is not at all true.) I'm not the only person in the dept. in this situation, but I seem to be the only one upset about it. Maybe I should just start filling out OT forms, and see what they say. They will not be happy about it though.

Well lgj, that's not too shabby. Way better than a few hours ago. Committee is done and no oral exam. Seems that 2 very major things are crossed off your list.

Is it necessary for you to physically hang around the local geography for the approval? Or can they get whatever they need from you over the phone, email, fax, etc.?

thanks Roy, and that's a very good question... I'm going to find that out. It may be that I can go home Friday. I'm just concerned that they're going to make me present something at the last minute.

I have a 8.5 hour day with an half-hour lunch and 2 paid 15 minute breaks. I combine the breaks with lunch for 8 hours paid.

Well, I work 7 to 7. No time for lunch. If I leave the building for lunch, I have to take vacation time. I always get there NLT 645 so the night guys can tell me what went on. And I never leave before 715, so I can tell the night guys what went on. Yes, they could come early or stay late, but they choose not too. We all started out as equals. I put in the extra time. I now make a lot more money than they do. A lot. More than I would make if I put the extra 1/2 hour on my time sheet. Maybe instead of putting the OT on a sheet, you should talk to your boss about your dedication and ask for a promotion.

Rosie, your time is valuable. I know it is to me. I would fill out OT for any time I was there over 15 min. more than scheduled. If they don't like it, they will more than likely find some way for you to get your work done without working OT. And, if they don't, you get paid OT. Or perhaps you could work it out where they give you comp time instead of OT. Me, I'd rather get paid and I have made my feelings known about that in the past. Of course I have a union behind me but, still, if you are there and have to work, you should get paid.

Oh, I would agree with that. As I stand now, I am incredibly underpaid considering the quality of work I do vs the others and the time I put in, and I know there is no way I'll be getting a promotion no matter how well I perform, so that's why, in my case, making sure I put in every minute of OT is neccessary.

I hate it when LAUNCHcast plays some totally random song.

I had the volume pumped up while listening to "Welcome to the Jungle" and then LAUNCHcast started playing "It's not unusual" by Tom Jones. Everyone in my area just started staring at me like I chose for LAUNCHcast to play that..I don't mind that. Especially when it's playing My Launchcast. If I don't like it, I skip it and tell it to not play anymore. If I like it, I rate it. Of course mine isn't that loud.

Good example: It just played "Celebration" by Kylie Minogue.

Rosie, the way I look at it is you've got 2 options:

1.) Fill in the OT form for every blessed second over what is expected and extract your $$$ from your employer.
2.) Put in the time, don't charge them for it, but make darn well sure your boss knows you're doing it because you're a dedicated worker.

#1 is short term gain, #2 is longer term.

As a salaried person, I'm in the same boat creek is (figuratively that is, I don't sail on the U.S.S. Creek), i.e. whatever it takes to get the job done.

Which means, they get a hell of lot more than 40 hours a week out of me. For example, I've been putting in 12-14 hr. days since the beginning of November plus about 10-15 hours on the weekend. Yeah, occasionally when things are slow, I'll knock off early, but those days are few and far between. But, they compensate me well for it (bonuses+options=not have to worry about kids' college so much anymore) and I have enormous freedom in what I do, where I do it, and how it gets done. It's a double edge sword; lots of room to succeed, but lots of room to fail too. I just don't look down.

I'm salaried, but I'll put in my 2 cents before this freaking connection dies.

I'm supposed to work 8.5 hours, with a half hour for lunch.

I actually work at least 1 hour more than that a day, plus extra for long experiments. I also get coffee and talk to co-workers and read RZ. I figure it all evens out. I occasionally leave a little early on Fridays too. They get at least 5 hours more from me, but not when you take into account "play" time.

Here's what I've been working on since I got home:

Tolan Hill
Hamlet

Population: 72
Leadership: Reeve (Minha Tolan)
Military: 5 soldiers (outpost)
Religion: Obad-Hai, Pelor
Wealth: 10gp/50gp
Goods: herd animals

Description: A few hundred feet back from the road there lies a handful of humble, round stone houses with turf roofs scattered over a long, grassy hill dotted by the occasional oak or maple tree. Small patches of fenced-in cropland lie between the houses. Shepherds watch over small herds of sheep and wooly goats grazing on the hillside. Further back from the houses stands a single stone tower, no more than ten feet tall.

Notes: Tolan Hill is a nondescript hamlet on the River Road. The people of the Hill are a quiet and reticent folk. They do not go out of their way to greet travelers, as most travelers have little desire to stop here. Tolan Hill offers no inn, no taverns, no shoppes, and little else of interest to draw in visitors. The only locations of interest here are the guard tower, which holds a garrison of five soldiers from Castaril (LN War5), and a shrine to Obad-Hai (see below).
Families are close-knit and neighbors are cordial with one another, though not overly friendly. In addition to their herds, most folk here maintain a half-acre or so of farmland to supplement their diet of meat and milk. Some also hunt and forage in the wooded foothills further back from the hamlet proper.
When a merchant or trade caravan stops over (usually about once a week or so), the people of the hamlet all come down to the road with their herds and trade their stock for other goods. PCs wishing to purchase supplies here other than livestock will find it difficult to do so – there is nothing to be had here with a value over 50 sovereigns, and even then a Gather Information (DC10) check must be made to track down anything specific.

History: The hamlet was founded in 302 by Brand Tolan, a retired soldier in the King’s Army with a lot of grit and little common sense. A good man at heart, Brand was of the sort who believes every man had his place in life. As an ex-soldier, he was not accustomed to taking orders – or even suggestions – from those who were not his superior. As a freeman after his stint in the military, he felt none were superior to him save the nobility, and there were few nobles to be found in those wild days when Curtsain Vale was still unsettled.
Brand came to the hill and it suited him well – in those days there was no road, and no one to bother him for as far as the eye could see. Unfortunately, there were three bugbears beneath the hill who felt the same way. The bugbears would creep out of their dank cave every night and take one of Brand’s sheep back with them for food; he tried setting traps for them, but the wily bugbears always evaded them. After three nights of this, Brand had had enough. He put on his blade and shield one more time and ventured into the caves, where he managed to slay all three bugbears.
The menace defeated, Brand Tolan went on to live out the rest of his days as a peaceful shepherd. His shield was reputed to have magical properties, but any clue as to its whereabouts died with him.

Notable Persons:
Minha Tolan, Reeve of Tolan Hill: Minha Tolan (LG Com6/Ari2) is the great-great-granddaughter of Brand Tolan (see History, above) and has served as Reeve of the hamlet for some thirty-five winters. An old, wizened woman with a hacking cough who must use a stout staff to get around, she is nevertheless quick of wit and sharp of tongue – even the stoutest man of Tolan Hill will cringe beneath the full force of her words. Minha runs a tight ship, and will not tolerate backtalk or disobedience; “Minha knows best” is a common refrain around the hamlet. She is a bit of a meddler and has no qualms about sticking her nose into the private businesses of others – she feels that if she is to watch over the Hill, she needs to know everything that goes on there. Minha is a devout follower of Obad-Hai.

Locations of Interest:
Brand’s Cave: On the stony northern slope of Tolan Hill stands the entrance to the caves where the bugbears Brand Tolan fought once dwelt. The mouth of the cave has long collapsed and grown over with lichens and mosses, but those who know where to look stand a good chance of uncovering the cave (DC30 Gather Information or Knowledge (Dungeoneering) DC25).
Before he passed away, Brand used these caves to store his wealth, and much of it still remains there. An old stone chest there contains 300 gold sovereigns, 2,000 silver pennies, a Lg. Steel Shield +1, and three potions of Cure Moderate Wounds (gifts from a wandering cleric of Pelor whom Brand took in for the night).
Those who would take this treasure be warned; the key to its lock has long since disappeared (DC27 Open Lock) and it is rigged to collapse the ceiling should it be opened without it (DC25 Search and Disable Device; fail: 4d6 damage in 20’ radius, Ref DC17 for half). Brand was a greedy man in life and remains so in death – he who takes his treasure must also contend with his spirit (treat as a Wraith – MM258).

Shalm’s Old Oak: A cool, clear brook runs through a valley formed by two steep craggy-sloped hillsides back from the hamlet. A dense copse of oaks about thirty feet deep and twenty feet wide also stands in the valley, and in the center of this grove a single old, gnarled oak with exposed roots that drink deep from the brook rises above the others. There is an overwhelming sense of peace and serenity here.
This copse is sacred to followers of Obad-Hai. Small woolen pouches of nuts and berries lie scattered at the base of the Old Oak. By local custom, disturbing these sacrifices or damaging the copse (even collecting firewood) is a crime; those who do so must leave all their belongings as sacrifices to Obad-Hai and never return to Tolan Hill again; if the Shalm is particularly displeased by the desecrator, he may (25% chance) send a Dire Elk (MM2 p75) to drive him from the copse!
If a prayer and appropriate sacrifice (gathered nuts and berries, or unworked goods with a value of 10gs or more) to Obad-Hai are offered here, the Shalm will bestow a +1 divine bonus to all Saves until the next rising of the moon. This bonus is increased to +2 to those for whom Obad-Hai is their patron deity. Knowledge of the appropriate sacrifices and prayers needed is available to any PC who makes a Knowledge: Religion (DC20) check; followers of Obad-Hai receive a +5 circumstance bonus to this check.

See how easy that is, RL? Nobody cares about this, but I'm posting it anyway. :MandJ:

I am really at a loss for words re. my work situation right now. Again, thanks for all the advice from everyone. I just don't know what to do.

I don't want to bore y'all with the details, so I won't. But I'll try to figure out how to handle this, and I'll let y'all know how it goes. :)

However, I do want to complain (just one more time!) about work. In particular, about being here tonight. I have done about one hour of work. Actual work has taken me one hour to do. And, now I'm done. I AM DONE WITH WORK for the night, and it's just 7 p.m. I am supposed to be here until 1 a.m. .... whatever in the world am I going to do with myself until then??????

So here's my question: Is it wrong to gently remind my boss that 1. I am here on OT for the second time this week, 2. my job is done for the night, and 3. I am open to being sent home early (thus saving the company money, of course ;) ). Is it wrong to do that, or do I just sit here and be bored for 5 or 6 more hours?

CQ, where are these questions coming from? Is this a test?

More like 2 seconds.

Yeah I have yet to open that one. But I think they should just go ahead and change the title to Hey here's something we can argue about and no one will change anyone else's mind.

It's out there. I can't even follow half the arguments in there.

And yes on the title change.

The questions are from me. This is not a test.

You try to get edumacated and look what happens.

So they might change our contract at work to make it so we can deploy. I haven't told anyone yet. Except now all of cyberspace.

If it happens it won't be for a while. I know I am stupid, but I don't have a problem with it.

How do you feel about that creek? Not that I don't think that creek can't kick some serious :allovrjr: if that were to happen. But is it really necessary for you to do your job?

Ok, so I was minding my own business, flipping though the channels, when I stumbled onto tonight's Smallville.

Now, I'm a comicbook fan, but for some reason I've never watched the show. I stopped on the show because I heard a voice coming from my tv that I was not expecting to hear. A voice from the past. The voice of ZOD~! HOLY NEGATIVE ZONE! GENERAL ZOD IS KAL'S FATHER!!!!

Terrance Stamp, who played General Zod in the first two Superman films, is playing Jor-El, and nobody told me!

GAAAHHH!!!

YOU. WILL. KNEEL. BEFORE. ZOD

I doubt they'll ship me off as a co-op. But once I'm full-time, I can really see myself getting shipped out.

I might as well have entered ROTC.

Something might be coming down the pipe that would make it nice if we were forward located.

If being there (wherever there might be) would help keep the ground pounders safer, then sign me up.

I know this sounds cocky, but oh well. I'm really good at what I do. If I need to leave a few creature comforts to do it even better then that's okay.

Hopefully I'll be able to hear the whole story Monday and won't be overreacting then.

Oh this is just my office. It would effect 10 of us. You're safe.

Hey do you start back on Monday?

Oh, you left that little part out. :MandJ:

Yes, I'll be there Monday. Had my last finals today. The thought of no school for four months is a very nice thought.

im brain dead, I posted this in the wrong thread....

Hey all,

So I did the camping thing last night.

Hella fun, lots of drinking and having fun out in the desert. We made a big bonfire.

I took my better half with me, we played nice, got along great, talked for a long while off away from the main group (Which was cold as heck!) and at least planned some activities for our upcoming anniversary in Jan.

So I'd say things are better. Not fixed or best, but better.

We even had someone take our photo out in the cold.

Anyway, hope everyone else is having a good evening. Came home to find that I have a massive packet from Nissan Motors at the house. I asked for "more information" about the Titan when I went to the auto show, and so far more information has consisted of this packet, and about half a dozen emails asking if I'm ready to talk about prices yet.
