I went down to the Travel, Boat and Vacation show at the Convention Center this afternoon. The only construction going on was on the outside of the building and on the 2nd floor. It appears that Coug's ruling on my call of SHENANIGANS on the Reds was correct.

Thanks for the offer, but what we need is a camping/tailgate burner. So we can cook at the site. Of course, not sure what kind of regulations the parks up there have regarding cooking onsite.

I see. But that's the rub. For one thing, you don't know where this game is going to be at. If it's in some city/county/state park, there may be laws against that sort of thing. Heck, there may be open container laws for that matter. If it's just at some ball diamond, there may be laws against open container and cooking out of doors. But I guess a regular kitchen may be too small for the type of pot Go-Go-Sox has. If only we knew a law enforcement type person who had knowledge of these laws. ;)

I was talking with TB last night and mentioned Big Bone Lick State Park about 20 miles south of Covington might be a possibility. A state park may have less restrictions than a city or county park. Also, a park like that may be easier to find for the out of towners since it's off I-71/I-75 (OK, it's not right off the interstate but it's relatively easy to find once you get off the exit). It may be a bit of a drive for the folks living north of the city but it may be easier than accessing some of the county parks. I did a bit of Googling on this topic and I didn't find much about laws forbidding cooking or open container. I know BBL has picnic facilities and a ball diamond but there's no guarantee that it will be available. If I were y'all I'd look on some of the State/County park web sites and see what the regulations are and look at the maps as well to see if they have areas to play ball. Also, you might want to think about doing this in 2 stages. First, find a place to play the game and then secondly, go somewhere for a picnic. If you decide to go the park route, you might want to check into reserving a picnic area. For instance, in Sharon Woods, beyond RF at the Village field there are a couple of picnic areas and one has enough room to play ball at. So we reserved it but it's going to cost a little over $100. If you have 20 people, that's $5 each. Not too bad if you want to guarantee a place to play and picnic.

SandyD
01-16-2005, 11:12 AM
I checked the Cincinnati Parks sites and they had 5 sites with nice pavillions that could be reserved for $85 dollars, I believe. Nothing on regulations, though. Some of them had grills, but no info on other means of cooking.

No info on beer either, but they did mention special permits were necessary if alcohol is sold.

MWM
01-16-2005, 11:14 AM
I definitely believe it will be easier to find a place if you get away from the city. If y'all are willing to drive to Butler County, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find a place.

I will be out of school and will "probably" be there. The problem is I have no idea where I'm going to be this summer. Most likely I will be in either Milwaukee, Cleveland, or St. Louis. All of those are within driving distance, but I might not get there until late Friday night.

I should know in the next couple of weeks where I'll be. Actually, the next three weeks are the most important of my whole time here in school when I will be interviewing for internships. The good news is I've been lucky enough to get on the interview list of just about every company I was interested in and that's not an easy thing. The bad news is that this is one of the best B-Schools in the country and it is filled with GREAT people. Alos, my focus is one of the more popular focuses here, so there will be a lot of competition. There's more qualified and good people then there jobs for those people. SO the interview is critical. My first one if Tuesday with the company I'm most interested in.

I'm not real sure about KY. I've always played softball in Softball Complexes, where it seems like its the law everyone has a beer. But I've never seen anyone cook food at them. If you go to a Hamilton County Park, the cooking won't be a problem. It seems to me, from memory, you couldn't legally have alcohol at the camping areas and public areas of the Park, but you could get a permit at a picnic area or maybe it was that they didn't enforce it at the picnic area, which is where the ball fields are also located. The problem with that is that everyone that drove there would have to buy a park permit just to get in. If you go to a City owned public park the open container laws would be in effect. Plus there, you'd have to share your alcohol with Otis.

Sharon Woods is a nice idea, because it's also the weekend of Chip's tournament.

Lake Isabella is near us. No diamond, but a big open space. Pretty laid back too.

How do the downtowners feel about driving 15-20 minutes north for the game? I'm sure the lot of you could pack into 1-2 cars.

Both those parks are off 275. Easy to find.

There's actually a local park near us, but there are always kid's baseball or soccer games going on.

About the softball game: If we have it in an outlying area (Big Bone, Butler Co., etc.), will transportation be a problem for out-of-towners? I mean, I know I could take a few people, but I just want to make sure everyone could get there.

I found a list of some softball fields around town. It's here (http://www.basesloadedsoftball.com/cincy_fields.php). I think these might be the ones leagues use most often though, so it might hard to get one of them. And some of them are pretty far away; I used to play at Rumpke, and it's out there. (For me, anyway.)

There's also Triple Creek (http://www.hamiltoncountyparks.org/parks/triple_creek/), but I don't know if we could get a field there.

Maybe the Cincinnati Recreation Commission could point us in the right direction? They organize softball leagues, might know of a place we could play.

How fabulous was that pink leather jacket the lead singer of The Killers wore for "Mr. Brightside"?? That was HOT. ;)
I saw part of it. The opening was pretty funny. Darrell Hammond always is money as Clinton - especially when he's flirting. The monologue was mediocre but the first sketch was rather funny with the truckers talking about Brad and Jen. I think some of those folks on SNL would be better served rehersing more so they don't constantly keep cracking up in their sketches. Either that or laying off the pot before the show. I missed The Killers cause I was switching back and forth between SNL and Buffy. I saw some of Weekend Update and a few of the jokes were good but once you get past WU - and this has always been true - the quality goes down. I finally crapped out at around 12:30.

I completely agree re. Hammond as Clinton. It's to the point where I can't see Clinton without thinking of SNL. The same with Bush and Will Ferrell. And while no one can top Will Ferrell when doing Bush impressions (IMO), the guy who does them now is okay.

The Killers were definitely the best part of the show last night. Although I did like the sketch with Topher as a web site designer, meeting the artists.

Good job looking that up. However, you guys are going to need a place that meets all of the criteria which is an actual place to play for an extended period of time cause I don't think you guys would be satisfied with just an hour long game. The place would also have to be able to be OK for drinking and it would have to be a good place to picnic at - especially if Sandy and Go-Go-Sox are making jambalaya. It should also be easily accessible for the folks who are coming in from out of town. I wouldn't worry too much about an actual softball field. Just an open space to play would be sufficient.

Open space to play ... really, I'm just coming up with Sharon Woods and Winton Woods. We played a lot of family softball games at Sharon Woods, years ago. Keener Park maybe, but it's up in West Chester. Ault Park maybe? What about Devou Park, anyone know anything about that place? I've only been there a few times. Great view of the river/downtown!

Oh, this is the start of something good
Don't you agree?
I haven't felt like this in so many moons
You know what I mean?
And we can build through this destruction
As we are standing on our feet
So, since you want to be with me
You'll have to follow through
With every word you say
And I, all I really want is you
You to stick around
I'll see you everyday
But you have to follow through
You have to follow through
These reeling emotions they just keep me alive
They keep me in tune
Oh, look what I'm holding here in my fire
This is for you
Am I too obvious to preach it?
You're so hypnotic on my heart
So, since you want to be with me
You'll have to follow through
With every word you say
And I, all I really want is you
You to stick around
I'll see you everyday
But you have to follow through
You have to follow through
The words you say to me are unlike anything
That's ever been said
And what you do to me is unlike anything
That's ever been
Am I too obvious to preach it?
You're so hypnotic on my heart
So, since you want to be with me
You'll have to follow through
With every word you say
And I, all I really want is you
(For) you to stick around
I'll see you everyday
But you'll have to follow through
With every word you say
An I, all I really want is you (For) you to stick around

Well, I vote for Sharon Woods. ;) I think there's a few areas there that would be perfect. If you are going with city parks, you have to think about open container guidelines and that sort of thing. Plus, Ault Park isn't exactly easy to get to and neither is Devou Park.

Ya know, I'll bet fish who are caught and returned are a lot like people who are abducted by space aliens.

You're swimming along, minding your own business, hanging out with your fish buddies, and lo and behold, a big fat juicy worm.

So, you do what any fish would do, you chomp down on it. And "HEY.... Whoa!!!!" .... up you go to the mother ship. And they prod you, and photograph you, and pass you around to the other aliens, and finally after scaring you half to death, they return you to the place they took you from.

And then you tell your fish buddies what happened, and they're all like "yeah, sure" and they talk about you behind your back and now you're that crazy fish who believes in life above the water, and stuff.

Something for you to think about, CQ.

There is a common theme around baseball after the mid nineties to not overpay for years that the player is outright owned by the organization, many GM's don't like the big payoff to young players because the young arb players who don't get that kind of jack will use the guy that got signed as his barometer, pushing the market up.

1 year contracts don't bother me, I'd like to see a good payoff for the guys that could get a multi-year but don't. Contracts for 3 true outcome types scare GM's. Look at Burrell, dips in BA bring his game down and the K's get maginified when you dissect it.

K's vs regular outs don't matter as much in the math of the game but in the general perception it drives a wide berth, often the general perception drives the organization and the Reds have never overpayed anyone before they were forced to.

I watched Garden State last night. Didn't someone say that was a good movie?
Very, very weird movie. Can't say that I'd enjoy seeing it again. Good music, bad movie.

Also watched Bourne Supremecy last night. That was a good movie. Just as good as the first one, IMO, although I thought they could have done better with the camera work. There were a lot of shots that were dark and others that the picture was moving too much. I know that was probably the effect they were going for, but I thought some of the shots were too dark, and some shots had too much motion in them. I told that to my wife and she said "why don't you write 'em a letter, Mr. Producer." :)

God must be a Patriot fan. I realize it is January, but the weather is always at it's worst in Foxboro when the playoffs come. Teams like the Colts, which play in a dome, have little chance.

The Pitt-Patriots game ought to be a good one. But I don't see it being a high scoring affair. Something like 16-13 Pats. It's just hard to go against Bill Belicheck. The guy always finds a way. He's one of the best.

For the record here is why Brady reminds me of Montana.

Both played at name universities in the midwest and weren't the name QB on campus, however ended up starting and surprising everyone. Then they were both drafted late for eventual starting QB's (Montana 3rd and Brady 6th) Once with their new teams they were behind guys considered the teams incumbents (Steve DeBerg and Drew Bledsoe), they eventually steal the starting job and then lead their teams to Super Bowls (Montana a year after his ascent)

Both are maligned for not being the prototype ( I know I beat on Montana for most of Reagens two terms) both just win and get slammed.

HILARIOUS: This excerpt from a story for tomorrow:

The Brady-Manning comparison is apt because the two quarterbacks seem so similar to two all-time greats who plied their trade a decade or so ago – Dan Marino and Joe Montana.

Manning broke Marino’s record for touchdown passes in a season when he threw his 49th against San Diego in Week 15. And he’ll probably break more of the many career passing records now held by the former Miami QB.

But for all those records, Marino got to only one Super Bowl and lost that one – to Montana and the 49ers naturally. Manning has now played seven seasons and never gotten beyond the AFC title game the Colts lost – where else? – in Foxboro a year ago.

Brady is like Montana, who got to four Super Bowls with San Francisco and won them all. Montana was Brady’s hero and like Montana, a third-round draft pick in 1979, he was an afterthought, a sixth-rounder in 2000, the 199th pick overall. Manning has won the NFL’s regular-season MVP award two years in a row but Brady has won two Super Bowls in three seasons as a starter and has the MVP award from those games.

But the winner-loser comparison can be simplistic.

Like Montana, Brady plays on a true team – full of guys who make big plays without necessarily being All-Stars. Like Marino, Manning must carry his teammates.

You do have a very good point, I just feel that it is a little early to be calling Brady the Montana of this generation. As it is to early to call Manning the Marino of this generation. I would let it all play out before making a statement like that.

FWIW, I find Chad Pennington to be the most similar to Montana.

Chip R

Like Marino, Manning must carry his teammates.
When Marino was playing he never had a back as good as Edgerin James to hand off to. Mark Duper and Mark Clayton were great receivers but neither were in Marvin Harrison's class.
