Here in Texas, the media says that Longhorn fans approved mightily, while the fans of the state's other universities were not pleased by the pictures of the First Family giving the hand gesture of their in-state rival.

Norwegians Confused by Bush Salute

OSLO, Norway - President Bush (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/ap/ap_on_re_eu/bush_satanic_sign/14058786/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22President%20Bush%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) - web sites (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/ap/ap_on_re_eu/bush_satanic_sign/14058786/*http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=web-storylinks&p=President%20Bush))'s "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.

That's what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region.

"Shock greeting from Bush daughter," a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said above a photograph of Bush's daughter Jenna, smiling and showing the sign.

For Texans, the gesture is a sign of love for the University of Texas Longhorns, whose fans are known to shout out "Hook 'em, 'horns!" at sporting events.

Bush, a former Texas governor, and his family made the sign to greet the Longhorn marching band as it passed during the inaugural parade through Washington during Thursday's festivities, explained Verdens Gang, Norway's largest newspaper.

I had read that story in my local paper this morning. It's funny how certain words and gestures don't translate the same way in different countries and cultures.

Thanks for not titling this thread "Norwegians think Bush is anti-Christ" or something.

Maybe we should just let the 800 lb gorilla nap?

Thanks for not titling this thread "Norwegians think Bush is anti-Christ" or something. It seemed a good bet that there aren't any Norwegians reading the board to take offense. I think baseball season doesn't start there until June. ;)

Hey, wasn't Bert Blyleven Norwegian? I bet some Norwegians tuned into the HOF announcement and are pretty upset. :D

Wasn't ABBA from Sweden? Or was it Norway? Is there a difference? :allovrjr:

Good thing Bush won't be running for re-election in 2008 as he's probably lost the critical Norwegian swing voters. ;)

La Mano Cornuda!

I love it.

I wish more Presidents understood the value of the horned hand.

Back in the late 80's and early to mid 90's, when I was playing "heavy" music in bars on the weekends...

We loved the people who gave us (the band) that sign. It meant that they were digging the music that we were playing. Do our president also violently shake his head back-and-forth while giving the sign? And if Jenna had done the sign to us (the band)... well someone in the group would have been talking to her during a break for sure. And she probably would have gotten an invite to the after-hours party. Now I have a thought in my head... do ya think Jenna owns any leather skirts?!?

Sign, sign... everywhere a sign.
Blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind.
Do this, don't do that... can't ya read the sign?
