Chicago Cubs closer Joe Borowski will be out three to four weeks after suffering a hairline crack in his right wrist while fielding a comebacker Monday, The Chicago Tribune reported.

Borowski, who missed the final four months of the 2004 season, won't likely see big league action until mid-May.

With Borowski down, LaTroy Hawkins, who blew nine of 34 save opportunities last year, will be the top candidate to fill in. There's also an outside chance non-roster invitee Chad Fox could fill the spot.

The Cubs did get good news on another pitching front. Right-hander Kerry Wood could take the mound Thursday or Friday, Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild told the Chicago Sun-Times.

With a positive outing, Wood would make another start next week and be prepared to start in the first week of the season.

Billy Koch would look good in a Cubbie uni.

They are counting on Dempster -- in the rotation.

Good luck with that one.

First they were counting on him to close and how they are counting on him in the rotation?

This could turn into a long year for the Cubbies.

Hey we could help the cubs out. We got a guy named Acevedo we could send them.

Something has really happened to Riedling since his strong start last year. I know he lost his dad, which must have really hurt a lot, but he started to slip even before that. (Maybe when his dad got sick to begin with?)

6 BB and 2 K's in 3.1 IP says it all. Ouch.

Is it just me but the Cubs are looking more and more like a 90 loss team for 2005.

The guy had control problems his whole career, 3.74 BB/9 was his best year ever.. for his career it has been 4.43 BB/9.

Bruce Berenyi's was 4.89

Yeah, I know he's always had control issues, but they've been getting worse lately.

I liked him better before we tried to make him a starter. He seemed to get worse after that awful idea. I know he has major control issues as a starter.

Borowski healthy is not a solution. The Cubs bullpen is screaming for forgetting the closer idea and finishing out games with their best reliever. For example, leave Hawkins out there for two innings instead of holding him back for the ninth only if they need someone to finish games out of the pen. Of course, many bullpens are screaming for putting their best reliever when the game is on the line, whatever inning that might be, when the starter needs help. But I imagine managers, including ours, will continue to put their second or third best reliever out there when the game is on the line while their "closer" sits and watches the game fritter away.

ESPN is now reporting that JB is out up to 6 weeks. Not just 3-4. While I know that noone here cheers injuries, not even to Bonds and such, but really, is anyone going to lose sleep over the Cubs and their fans having to endure a 90 loss season? :mhcky21:

90 losses huh?

If anybody is losing 90 its the Reds.

You honestly think the Cubs will have more losses than the Reds?

Absolutely and would risk a wager as well on it.

I'll bet you 25 bucks to the Jimmy Fund that the Reds lose 90 before the Cubs. :allovrjr:

To the Jimmy fund? Not sure what that is, but I will take your wager that the Reds finish ahead of the Cubs, this season.

I'm wagering on the 90 losses, not placement... so if you want that 90 losses bet the winner gives 25 bucks to

http://www.jimmyfund.org/

If no one loses 90 games we'll each give ten.

Because we're good guys. ;)
