Obviously the start of Aurlia with Wilson starting is Miley's way of saying Rich in the field is "solid".

Reminds me of another "solid" vet the Reds picked up in 1997.

SYCMiniBus
04-15-2005, 06:58 PM
Randa hitting cleanup is no problem since he is hitting out of his mind. Career numbers are not in the lineup current hot/cold streaks are. Thats why I see no reason not to have Randa splitting up the lefties. Now I see no reason that Aurillia is starting and I really would like to see Wily Mo get more then 1 start in a row, I mean he is OPSing 1.275 or something like that (VERY limited numbers I know, but still shows productivity).

For all of the broadcaster's talk of Wilson's early game effectiveness and K totals tonight, the fact is that too often he is leaving his fastball drifting up in the horizontal plane over the plate... which means he is likely about to get jacked (probably to deep to LCF to a guy who can turn on it like Ensberg, or maybe Lane).

If Oswalt had a propensity to leave pitches with limited velocity and/or late action up in the zone, I would definitely predict the same. most hitters are sitting on a fastball with a 3-2 count. if the pitcher is good enough to buckle your knees with a 3-2 curve there's not much a batter can do.

I'm really not surprised at the performance. The lineup is a mess. Griffey has only 2 rbi's this year despite hitting fairly well. Why? He's batting second. Joe Randa has a hot few games and all of a sudden he's a cleanup hitter? We need offense (obviously) and we play Aurillia (can't spell it) instead of a kid who can hit for defensive purposes and...well, you get the idea.

And that doesn't even address the fact that Claussen hasn't pitched enough to jeopardize his red shirt. What is the wide, wide world of sports is going on?

yes nasty curve.....

only guys who make adjustment on that are guys like Casey, Randa et al. Guys who either always have a more compact swing and good early recognition of pitches or guys who adjust approach with 2 strikes so they can foul off pitches which they're fooled on. He is neither.

Dunn had enough time to take a practice swing on that offspeed pitch. It's one thing to shrug at his strikeout in total. It's entirely another to let that one go by, even if he was fooled. Take a hack, at least try to foul it off, something.

You've been thinking about it too, haven't you? :D
Nope, i'm more concerned about there being two men on base when they give 'em up, that two straight starts Wilson is gassed and can't get the ball down after five innings, and five pretty good innings at that. That is Wilson, that's his game. And we get two more years of it.

Dunn had enough time to take a practice swing on that offspeed pitch. It's one thing to shrug at his strikeout in total. It's entirely another to let that one go by, even if he was fooled. Take a hack, at least try to foul it off, something.

maybe he thought it was going to be a ball. it was a great pitch.

However, if Aurilia stands there and looks foolish on an eephus pitch, I'm pretty sure there would be three threads started about how bad he sucks, which he does, just not understanding why folks are making excuses for Dunn in that at bat. I mean, no one will kick anyone out of the "strikeout is just an out" club if they say "man, c'mon Dunn, do something with that pitch"

You're projecting what you think could happen and making judgements on others because of it. If people comment about Aurilia it's based on three straight years of poor and declining performance and the fact that three teams gave up on him. And it's because of his entire body of work this year. Not because of a single AB.And no, not against someone as nasty as Roy Oswalt would I ever criticize a player for getting buckled up by a pitch like that. That was a flat-out nasty pitch, I don't think you can criticize a hitter for watching it. There's nothing Dunn, or many major league hitters, could have done with that pitch. When great ptichers are on, they shut down even the best lineups in the game. That's what we're seing tonight.

Yeah, this team is not hitting at all. What I dont understand is that Aurillia is still starting, why? Also, if Weber cant reach 90 on his fastball then I say DL him and bring up Coffey,or Stone. We gotta get Wily Mo more AB's, why not go with this lineup 2 morrow against the stros, what do we got to lose?

The early game single by Kearns will likely have more WPA than this bottom of the 7th leadoff double by Dunn (being that score is 9-1). And rightly so.

The strange thing about Larue's HBP is that none of them are that close to the plate. They all come at him square in the back where he doesn't have much chance at getting out of the way.

For the first time this season I'm starting to get upset. The whole time the Astros were in New York everybody talked about how weak their offense is. I had hopes that for once we were going to have a decent pitching staff. This stinks. (And the Red's offense is nothing to write home about either).

Folks, this isn't the last time we're going to see a game like this one. Paul Wilson is not a ood pitcher and the bullpen could be worse than last year's. One thing I heard a lot this offseason that I thoroughly disagreed with is that the bullpen was much improved. I don't buy it. And if Belisle ends up in the rotation for any period of time, that takes out probably the best person outside of Wagner they had there.

I don't know why you people are so worried about the BP. Unlike last year, the Reds have some power arms they can install into the unit. We already have Wagner and Valentine here. The rotation and them going more than 5 innings is the key. If Wilson is going to have a bad year, they can move Belisle and Claussen permanently into the rotation to work their stuff.
