I agree, enough with the Danny Graves side show. Everytime he comes into a close game I feel like I'm getting years knocked off the end of my life. My heart just can't handle it anymore.

Again, I say this is why I drafted him in my Big $$$ league this year. I couldn't help but see him closing for the Reds, NLT the AS Break.

I'm "watching" the game via gamecast and listening to Marty thanks to the blackout here in Amarillo, and I could see how nasty RW was

Been a lloooooooonnnnggg time since the Reds have run an arm out of the bullpen that

A) Made you want to look in excitement rather than fear and

B) Brought that kind of stuff to the mound.

Last one that made me excited like Wagner is right now was Dibble in his heyday .

Sure would be nice to go ahead and get some runs here to get Wagner in line for the "W" since Harang cannot get it.

I can't help but wonder what turn of events could transpire that would get Coffey up with the big club, but whenever it happens, those two (Todd and Ryan) can bring the electricity level up a notch or two.

They've got the primordial ooze of a bullpen that can be vicious in the coming years.

04-17-2005, 03:26 PM
What in the heck has happened to Casey this year?

OSURedLeg
04-17-2005, 03:27 PM
Does it seem to anyone else that Casey is not seeing the ball very well right now? He's swinging at some really poor pitches, and usually he's got a better eye than that. I'm just sick of watching him hit dribblers each AB because he's not swinging at his pitch.

SandyD
04-17-2005, 03:27 PM
Yes, he had a walk off home run back in 2002 against the Dodgers. Eric Gagne was alot ejected for hitting Dunn after serving up a home run to Aaron Boone.

I was at that game. Jr came in as a ph in the bottom of 9th and struck out. Came up again in the 11th, I think, and grounded out. It was the bottom of the 13th when he hit the walk-off. Great moment.

Chip R
04-17-2005, 03:28 PM
We're going to need to find some more options in the bullpen because Wagner cannot pitch every day. It'd be nice if he could but he'll be burnt out by the all star break if he does.

What is D'Lo's OBP this season? I'm just curious to see if he's getting on base enough to fill the leadoff role. I was afraid this was going to happen again since last year he hit poorly in the leadoff spot but he got on base at a decent clip. I'm guessing Miley gives D'Lo all of April and part of May to right the ship or else Freel is going to be in there.

FeartheEars
04-17-2005, 03:28 PM
He not only assumed Larkin's role as leader but slow starter as well perhaps? I remember years when Barry would just flat out struggle for a month or two. Give Case time he will bounce back

"At this moment, Biggio handles the bat really well," Garner said. "He's probably a little better hitting to all fields than Everett is. I think Everett's strength is left-center field and from second base around. I don't want to put Everett in a position where he's taking away from his strength to try to hit behind a runner or try to take pitches."

Translation:

"Adam Everett is fast and he's overmatched on fastballs, sliders, curveballs, and pretty much anything but a changeup. He can hit those when he's guessing right. And fast people hit at the top of my lineup regardless of how many Outs they make. Except Tavarez. Because he's a rookie. And rookies don't hit at the top of my lineup."

Man, Sean Casey is clueless right now. Not driving the ball at all, not walking, striking out, not getting rbi's. Its tough to score when you're top three hitters are struggling (although Junior isn't technically struggling, he is pretty close to it)

If I remember correctly, Jimmy Haynes almost went yard when he was placed in as a pinch hitter in the 11th or 12th.

That's a good point. I've always felt that Casey can make contact with any pitch he chooses to. His slumps, IMHO, is that he gets into a funk where he chooses to make contact with ANY pitch rather than waiting for the pitch he should be hitting.

Does it really matter if Graves or Wagner is the closer? In a close game, one of them will always pitch the 8th and one will always pitch the 9th, or so it seems. If Wagner became the closer, wouldn't Graves just blow the game in the 8th anyway?

Graves=4 saves/4 chances. Luckily in baseball you only have to win by one run. :KoolAid:

I prefer the Wagner to Graves handoff as well. Wagner should always be the first line of defense--getting K's in the tough spots in the seventh or eighth, leaving a clean slate for Graves in the ninth.

FSN blew a save?

Or maybe they knew it was up to Gravey and they couldn't bring themselves to watch either!

***To be fair... I'd rather watch SUMMER SANDERS than Danny Graves, too.

MMMM... Summer Sanders... *drool*

If you want to sell the Plymouth Duster you have to wash it and park by the front gate.

Don't look now, but if St. Louis loses today, the reds are in 1st place.

Huh? But just two days ago we were out of the race and hoping for the wild card! :dunno:

Just returned from the game - two thoughts...
1) Wagner needs to be the closer! Graves is giving me fits! :rant2:
2) What to do with Wily Mo? That HR shot was a monster. Of course, it's a good problem to have - 4 outfielders. So who sits tomorrow night against Woods?

Finally, I hope my baby :randa: is OK... he was walking awfully slowing back to the dugout after coming home after the play at the plate. Gotta :luvu: him!

Creek?

Is that you?

Are you no longer faithful to Adam?

Re: Wagner as closer- How many times have we seen this kind of arguement. Why don't we just leave Wagner alone doing what he's doing. Remember he's just a kid. We have no idea yet if he has a closers mentality, something Graves clearly has. Remember how messed up Wagner got last year. Why rush the kid, particularly if Graves is doing the job. Foryunatly I think Miley has enough experience and patience that he will let this situation play itself out.

I think if they leave Wagner as is, it's more beneficial because he can be brought into games during the toughest of situations.

Bring in the best pitcher in the toughest of circumstances, let Graves grab some cheap saves, then ship him off at the dealine for a good 'spect or two.

Solid philosophy. I just hope that's what DanO's thinking too.

Exactly. Wagner is the heir apparent closer as we've all expected, but let's give the guy some run of success in the setup role for more than 6% of the season. Build his confidence. He's helping the team a ton right now bridging the gap in the 7th/8th innings.

Wagner and Pena's great starts are just terrific news for the young season. Nice to see harang with 8 K's (so rare to see any Reds starter average 1K or more per inning that you ahve to doublecheck the box score for a mistake).

Weren't some of these same people demanding Wagenr be closer post haste the same ones insisting that Riedling be made the closer ASAP last May...

Was thinking about how to handle the Wagner situation, since his clone over in Washington, Chad Cordero was handled almost exactly like Wagner, but didn't have a sophomore slump last year. Cordero is the closer this year, of course he is succeeding someone even worse than Graves in Rocky Biddle, and has converted 2 of 3 opportunities. But, honestly I think Cordero has a little bit better fastball than Ryan and if given the choice, I'd take Chad.

It seems like the wrong thing to do is hand Ryan the mantle as closer as they did with him as setup last year. Not sure if it freaked him out mentally, but he didn't get the job done, obviously. But, start reversing the roles occasionally, start giving Wagner some closing opportunities, whether it be coming back out to pitch the ninth or by bringing in Graves first and holding back Wagner for the ninth.
