Look the Cubs may have 4 runs, but they haven't hit the ball half as hard as the Reds. A few plays pulled out of their rear ends like the Cubs have had, and if the ump makes the correct call the Reds are down 3 - 0. I am actually not disappointed in Claussen tonight. His velocity isn't great, but he is fooling hitters. I think some Reds fans would criticize Brandon regardless of what he's doing out there, just so they can hear themeselves talk.

And for a few of them it's because they traded Boone to get him.

He'd have to be Sandy Koufax to get kudos.

I'm not concerned at all. We could be paying Aaron Boone $8 million per year to swing for the moon and boot ground balls.

A MLB team cannot survive trading commodities like Aaron Boone (whose market vale was VERY high at the time) for softer tossing versions of Ron Villone.

I've long been a Claussen supporter, contingent on his velocity returning. It hasn't. And there's a reason to be worried about that because Claussen's BB rate has taken a hit post-surgery. You can survive with a projectible 4.00/9 IP BB rate, but not if you're as hittable as Claussen is without his fastball.

Claussen seems to be settling. But this could have been a lot worse if Claussen would have eliminated the obvious mistakes...giving up a 2-strike hit to the pitcher, hitting a batter, failing to back up the throw to third. Even with his early pitching struggles this could easily have been a 2-1 game now.

Yeah the only real problem I had with Claussen tonight was not backing up during that broken bat single. However, mental mistakes will happen when you've been sitting the bench for three weeks. I'm pretty happy about his performance, and I think it's encouraging that he got stronger as he went.

You can survive with a projectible 4.00/9 IP BB rate, but not if you're as hittable as Claussen is without his fastball.

At least there's the chance that Claussen can be a serviceable major league pitcher. Aaron Boone was the most overrated player in baseball when the Reds traded him. Bowden signed him to a lot of money, and Aaron got good press because he's a nice guy to the reporters and teammates (which not coincidentally is how Bob Boone finagled his way into the dugout). Take another look at those "Team MVP" numbers he put up in 2002. Hal McCoy claimed he was a future gold-glove winner . . and he had a .954 fielding percentage at 3rd base!

Sorry. I don't mean to take this out on you because you don't even seem to be taking the other side. But I really think Claussen has some unreasonable expectations because people think he was the certerpiece of the Great Salary Dump. All in all, I think he's pulled it together nicely tonight after a rough start.

I think the Ron Villone comparison might be a tad bit unfair, but I agree with the premise that his drop in velocity could present problems in future outings.

With this particular outing, though, I was impressed with his breaking pitches, and the fact that despite being challenged velocity wise, he was still missing bats.

How is that possible?

Is it because Cub hitters tend to jump out of their shoes? Probably.

But is it also possible that this kid might have some nifty breaking stuff that he can use?

What do you think caused Brandon to lose his velocity? I'm not sure TJ is the whole answer because there are numerous stories of pitchers gaining some pop post surgery.

What's your take?

And yes, the Cubs hyperactive nature makes them a questionable litmus test.

and it will be sometime before you do. At this point, looking at the young talent the Reds have at SP AA upward, I think they are good prospects, in term of talents, but no Perez,Prior,Woods,Willis. That is DanO's challenge. Though, having a "good" staff isn't a bad thing either(compared to what the Reds have had).

O'Brien should be ashamed of his roster management. If the Reds didn't need a 5th starter until today, there's zero reason to have kept as many pitchers on the roster as he has.

Keeping a guy from pitching in a game situation for 19 days is crazy.

I agree that it is dumb to have Claussen be inactive so long.

I'm not sure if they were forced to keep Valentine on the roster or not (is he out of options?) But I'm glad Belise made the team, he deserved it. Unfortunately, Claussen is out of options.

My guess is they also wanted to carry 12 pitchers to sort them out and find the keepers before Hudson/Hancock are forced to be added to the roster or passed through waivers.

But yeah, I would prefer that they cut bait with the tweeners instead of extending the tryouts through the tweeners. To DanO's credit though, he did cut bait with Acevado.

Yeah, sure was a good idea to get rid of Acevedo for being overweight. We're so deep in middle relievers, just didn't need him. Doesn't matter that he looked like a good middle reliever last year. All these other young guys are obviously better.

It just isn't for this year, but developing arms that can throw heat. Not all will pan out, but if one does, along with one starting pitcher(outside of Harang) then the benefit of getting experience will be nice. Your making Acevedo sound like a sure bet. Wrong, wrong and more wrong.

Maybe, but the Reds are in love with a lot of guys who don't have great track records so far.

Belisle had a 5.2 at AAA last year with 192 hits allowed in 162 innings.

Coffey maybe ready someday, but his success was at AA last year, he struggled at AAA.

Claussen had a 4.6 at AAA last year, and only after a strong second half. He did not do well in the majors.

Valentine has great stuff and I think may make it, but doesn't have enough command yet.

The young guys who seemed most ready, Hudson and Hancock, unfortunately are hurt.

Acevedo is yesterday's news, but I just think he was more ready to help than many of these guys. Hopefully, I'll be proven wrong.

I hope the team trades Griffey and Casey for some pitching and SS. A 2nd baseman wouldn't be bad either.

Make Dunn, Kearns, Pena, and Encarnacion the core of the lineup. Get someone speedy and gets on base at SS and 2nd.

Maybe we should be heartened by the fact that a good part of the team has not played particularly well, and we are still a game over .500.

Aside from Randa and WMP, our hitters haven't been up to expectations (Griffey, Casey, Dunn, D'Lo, Kearns should ALL do better). Our pitching has been pretty much what we expected.

When a few more of our guns start firing...who knows?

When we get done trading Sean and everyone worse than him on the team for pitching we'll have about 2-3 postion players and 30 pitchers.

I don't understand why people are so content on trading this guy. We have sluggers with 40 HR potential, and we don't need another one, and we're not going to get a number one ace if he is traded. The guy has a .303 career batting average, he's a team leader, he was detremental in the acquisition of the free agents that we picked up in the offseason, and he's a great guy. I don't think Peter Gammons, nor the ones calling for his ouster will get their way, as Casey will probably be a lifelong Red.

I was at the ballgame, and I thought Claussen pitched better than his line. The reports I heard from spring training were that he was topping out at the low to mid 80's. A lefty can be effective at 88-90. He grooved one to Patterson, and Ramirez's broken bat hit with the bases loaded really stung. Jr. had the runner at third on that one if Randa handles it. But, overall, Claussen did a decent job of changing speeds, making his fastball look a little better than the reading on the radar gun. Considering the layoff and his performance this spring, I would have to say it was an encouraging start.
