What really is expected from Casey.

In 6 seasons he has 3 good season (900+ OPS)
1 decent season (827)
2 poor seasons(696, 758)

Is a 900+ OPS a realisitic expectation for 2005?

Wells should be good medicine for Casey. He's yet another guy who's a lot more vulnerable against LH hitters. Could be a tough day for Wily Mo if he's on.

The Pirates lineup also should be good medicine for Milton. Wilson discovered last night they'll get themselves out if you start working outside the strikezone.

a hypothetical....say wily mo's double came in the ninth with two down and casey's run brought the reds within one of tying the game. wily mo upon seeing the ball is not gonna leave the ballpark stops or even retreats to first instead of cruising into second. more than likely this leaves the bat in dunn's hands. would forfeiting a base in this situation be considered smart baseball or stupid baseball?

Elsewhere: Garciaparra out 2 to 3 months.

Will Carroll said this 2 months ago.

Red light - SS Nomar Garciaparra: Agreeing to the incentive-laden contract in hopes of pushing Garciaparra to stay healthy seems like a good idea. Eight million is still a large stack of green to put at risk. Garciaparra can't be in better shape--he's one of Mark Verstegen's hardest workers in the offseason--and his chronic wrist problem is likely to surface at all the wrong times.

Germany Schaffer was said to have done it, but that seems to have no written backup aside from tales from fellow players.

This is confirmed.

8/13/1902

"In the 6th inning of a game with the Tigers, Harry Davis of the A's attempts a double steal with Dave Fultz, who is on 3B. But Davis does not draw a throw as he goes into 2B. On the next pitch he 'steals' 1B. The next time he steals 2B he does draw a throw and Fultz scores from 3B..."

It would be incredibly dumb. If you assume that the Reds believe that Pena could score more easily from first with Dunn AB than from 2nd with Jimeniz AB (and if you can't assume it then why would Pens be held up?), then the smart play would be for the Pirates to walk Dunn intentionally anyway. Which they wouldn't, because in almost any conceivable situation, a player can score from 2nd way better than from 1st. The leagues worst hitters have a better chance of getting a single than the league's best hitters getting a double or more.

I predict that Milton will have a better pitch count record on the road than at home. He'll exert extra energy trying to keep the ball down in the GAB, missing more often than not on days he's not on. Plus his K rate goes down with runners on base... making his defense more important than it already is (now who doesn't think the Reds should have their best OF defensive team out there when Milton pitches?)
