Why does Casey bat 3rd and Dunn 5th? Is there any argument either that (a) you put the better hitter in the 5th spot or that (b) Casey is in any way a better hitter than Dunn? I just find this totally indefensible - even worse that Aurillia playing.

smith288

Not seeing Aurilia's name in there makes me feel all is right in the world.

Heck, even if Wilson was batting 4th i would feel this way. LOL

Kearns hitting 7th?

dave, dave, dave.

IMO for today.

Freel
Dunn
Griff
Kearns
Casey
Randa
Lopez (yes, even though he's on a tear.)
LaRue
Wilson

But it'll do. But he does have the right players are on the field. At least until WMP returns. :)

I don't know if I really like Dunn batting ahead of Randa, unless Randa starts going on some kind of a tear. I would like to see him have more protection than that. At least we have a decent middle infield starting. We can only hope Rich's hammy takes its time.

If Randa bats behind Dunn all year he'll have a Deron Johnson year.

I have Dunn in my strat league and he's stinking the joint up BA wise, but he leads the team in walks and is second in Runs. I've been leading him off a bit too.

I like the lineup - as I've posted many times the last week I prefer:

Freel
Lopez
Dunn
Griffey
Kearns
Casey
Randa
LaRue

However, this isn't bad either, especially since Casey is beginning to hit doubles, that signals he is about to go on a tear.

Now now, let's not be too harsh. Aurilia playing is far worse than having the right players in the wrong order.

You could argue the same about the Padres...they bat their OBP guy (Giles) in the 5 slot. (not that Nevin and Klesko are shabby).

IIRC he was mostly 3rd with the Pirates.

IIRC he was mostly 3rd with the Pirates.

They dropped Giles down to 5th because he was in a horrible slump (0-22 at one point). When they dropped him to 5th, he started hitting (vs StL). Klesko has been hot recently to boot, so that's why they stayed there, they are both hitting in the spots they are in. I'd imagine once Klesko cools off, Giles will go back to hitting 3rd where he has primarily hit with the Padres as well.

Another use of the term third rail is to denote a political idea or topic that is so unpopular that a politician or public official who suggests it becomes the subject of public derision; for example, a politician who would advocate the repeal of the US Social Security program. The analogy is that touching the third rail results in instant death.

Assumption, the money was there, why do you think it was only there for Wilson?

I'm sure you could find a 4 million dollar pitcher that was signed last season that was better than Wilson. But would he be willing to come to Cincy? Remember, Wilson was the first signing, there was no indication of the big spending spree. In fact, after Wilson was signed, DanO said starting pitching was no longer a priority.

So I was happy to get what I thought was an average pitcher as opposed to a known horrible one being in the rotation (Acevado or Robertson).

Naturally, it looks really bad now that Wilson has imploded. But I don't think anyone predicted he'd be this bad.

Anyhow, I'm explaining the reasoning at the time. If I had known at the time Wilson was signed that DanO was sitting on 18 million payflex, I would've thought differently.

Not saying I was right by any means, but there was also a lot of posters that overcriticized DanO's offseason moves. Some turned out ok. IMO, it's a lot easier to be an armchair GM and say the Reds should've just blown the entire wad on Lowe and Clement now.. But would those guys have wanted to come here?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of DanO. I admit that I got overly optimistic about the moves he made. But geez, no one predicted Wilson would be THIS bad.

Just saying why at the time, it didn't seem that bad, based on the little info we had. Heck, if DanO didn't sign Wilson, Milton and get Ortiz (as many posters wanted him to do.. sit tight and do nothing if that's the best he could do).. If DanO did nothing, can you imagine how terrible this team would be?

Rotation: Claussen, Robertson, Besisle, Acevado, Harang..

Again, I agree DanO has made more bad choices than good ones, but if Wilson repeats what he did in 2004, then it would've been an excellent signing. (Yes, I know that is a big if).

This kid must actually be pretty tough to hit. He's made a bunch of good hitters look bad all day long.

from espn.com

Tim Stauffer was the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft. The University of Richmond right-hander had a dominant '03 college season, going 9-5 with a 1.97 ERA and a 146/19 K/BB ratio in 114 innings. Most experts felt he was no more than a year away from being ready to compete in the majors, making him a fine pick at fourth overall. But a post-draft physical examination revealed shoulder weakness. To his credit, Stauffer told the Padres about the injury. His honesty cost him financially, the Padres reducing his bonus from $2.6 million to $750,000, but it was a strong testament to his character. The soreness cleared up without surgery, and Stauffer was healthy and effective in 2004.

Scouting report
Stauffer's fastball isn't spectacular in terms of velocity. He's usually at 89-91 mph, sometimes a notch higher. But his heater has good movement and he commands it well. The pitch looks faster than it is due to the contrast with his other offerings: a changeup, a standard curveball, a knucklecurve, and a cut fastball he will use in slider counts. Stauffer demonstrates excellent command of all his pitches.
