Cincinnati (14-24) at NY Mets (20-19), 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Kazuhisa Ishii is expected to make his first start in nearly a month when the New York Mets continue their against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.

Ishii (0-2, 4.82 ERA), who has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 19 with a strained muscle in his left side, is expected to be activated Tuesday and make his fourth start of the season.

In his first start as a Met on April 7, Ishii allowed just two hits in 6 2/3 innings but was charged with six runs - five earned - in a 6-1 loss as the Reds swept the season-opening three-game series.

The Mets began to atone for the sweep in Monday's opener, scoring four times in the first two innings en route to a 9-2 victory. New York tagged former Met Paul Wilson for seven runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Cliff Floyd belted his 11th homer of the year for and Mike Piazza broke out of an 0-for-18 slump with a sixth-inning double.

Ramon Ortiz (1-1, 6.75) will try for his second consecutive win for the Reds, who have lost three of their last four games. In 2003, Ortiz made his only career start against the New York and allowed three runs - one earned - and five hits in seven innings.

His control.

Gammons was just on ESPN. They ask him who's the next player to hit 50 homers...he said Dunn. I think he's the only analyst on ESPN that truly knows how great a player Dunn is.

Dierker has too much Houston in his blood wouldn't you think? There may be tons of examples of people spending so much time with one organization then managing a 'rival' I'm not sure..

Personally I'd be on the phone begging anyone to take over. Grady Little, Glenn Hoffman, Davy Lopes, Bernie Stowe, anyone. :)

On a sidenote, Jason LaRue owns this guy. Good thing he's not in there tonight.

Dave Miley is a mental midget. He plays Jason LaRue 95% of the time for the first month, and then he decides to prove a point. Any casual fan could see that LaRue was coming out of his slump in the Phillies series, so what does he do? He starts playing Valentin every other game as soon as LaRue starts a hot streak. What a maroon.

Adam Dunn has to hit 3rd. It just makes too much sense not to happen.

I wouldn't let this guy go to the store for me, much less manage my baseball team.

He was alright to play last night. I think it's a combination of what you said, and that he's made up his mind he's going to play Valentin more...in spite of what is obviously LaRue's first hot streak of the season. Miley could mess up a junk yard.

I've noticed he's been doing that more the last few days. He hasn't been getting a lot of good pitches to hit, and now he's getting too over anxious and swinging at borderline pitches.

You know, most people don’t know the difference between apple cider and apple juice, but I do. Now here’s a little trick to help you remember. If it’s clear and yella’, you’ve got juice there, fella! If it’s tangy and brown, you’re in cider town.

Just watching Miley on the pregame show leads me to believe someone should just put the man out of his misery. He looks like he's really stressed out and just IMO he seems to look like he's in over his head and he'd be better off in LOU or Indy or some place where they play AAA ball. I half expect him to start carry around ball bearings and rattle them around in his hand during a game.

I was thinking the same thing woy. During the OD broadcast (and ensuing series with the Mets), Fran Healy mentioned that Kearns showed up overweight to camp. He also mentioned that there was a sitdown meeting with Jr at the beginning of the season (putting him in the 2 hole). All you get from Reds broadcasts is how spectacular Albert Pujols is.

Yep, Dave doesn't have the ability to make the hard decisions (IMO) he's always had his roster determined by the big club and essentially he played who they wanted him to play. And he'd keep on playing them until they either failed and got cut or garduated to the big leagues.

Here he's expected to not only write the script, but the choose the actors, block the stage, print the flyers and bake the cupcakes to sell during intermission.

Problem is Dave's seems to still be struggling with the meaning of the 1st act.

I maybe the only person who doesn't mind Dunn batting lower than 2nd in the lineup. I understand all the arguments, protection and better pitches, OBP is worth more than SLG, etc. and I believe all that is true. However, I think Dunn's real strength is his ability to deposit a pitchers mistake into the Ohio River. Given that, I want the opportunity for more baserunners when he does it. Also, I'm not too sure about him seeing any better pitches the higher he bats. Even with all the strikeouts, I think pitchers are afraid to pitch to him and I don't think thats going to change regardless of whose hitting behind him. Let me ask you, who would you rather pitch to, Griffey, Kearns, Casey, or Dunn? I'm not trying to argue with you, just putting my opinion out there. :)

And I hadn't noticed him getting overanxious at the plate. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep an eye out for that.

I believe woy said except for the #1 hitter, the #5 hitters leads off the inning the most. That means Dunn isn't getting a lot of chances to hit with runners on. Moving him up in the order not only gives him a little more protection, but it gives him more atbats.

and I would rather face Casey the most out of that group. He's an automatic groundout.

I shouldn't have said he was too overanxious. I just noticed that he was swinging at a few borderline pitches that he usually doesn't chase. But I'm following the game on gamecast, so they may actually be strikes. :dunno:

Yeah I read it in a Bill James article, he basically said that on average the lead off guy will get on and then get moved over, then more often than not the next 2 guys make an out and thus the #5 leads off the next inning.

This of course was written when the number 2 guys was designed to move the runner along.

Conversely, Dunn only has 65 Plate Appearances with Runners On, compared to 73 for Casey (ugggh) and 71 for Randa. The marked difference also being that 22 of Dunn's 65 Plate Appearances with Runners On have resulted in Walks. Opponents certainly not giving him the chance to hurt them too severely with one swing of the bat and runners on, opting instead to face his inferiors in the #6 spot and below. He's wisely taking the Walk when he's being forced to either expand his zone or be pitched around... but Miley's not putting him in a position to either maximize the conversion of that OBP, or to drive Runs in by the boatloads. Basically that lineup construction is undermining the offense on 2 fronts.

:dunno:

I've gotten out of the habit of scoring games lately but I had noticed that Dunn seemed to be leading off alot of innings, or at least it seemed that way IIRC. I'm still not sold on getting better protection though. I still think that pitchers will pitch around him. Hence my question about who you would rather face. With Dunn hitting that high in the order, it's likely that one of the others will be behind him. I think they would still pitch around Dunn to get to the others. I'm curious and just asking, but do you know how many at bats Dunn loses by hitting 5th as compared to 2nd?

I'm not totally against hitting Dunn higher in the order, I just think 2nd maybe a little high for a slugger like Dunn. Trying to decide where in the order to put Dunn is a nice problem to have though. Don't you think? :)

The hard hits (of which there have been a number versus Ortiz) are being recorded at'em ball outs, whereas the dribblers and flares are going for hits. Strange game at times, though some luck is favoring Ortiz tonight. Hope the Reds strike here in the 6th with the top of the order, as you have to believe that the Mets will get to Ortiz the next time through the order. He's been unusually effective and worked quickly and confidently, but he's also really only shown them 2 pretty similar speeds of selections, and it's probably about to be timed.

Hope that wasn't a hit and run. Freel had a nice jump, but it's hard to tell if he was looking over his shoulder at the sound of contact, or to check on the play. Looked like a VERY uncharacteristic swing at the first pitch by FeLo, and one he was consciously trying to take the other way. I hate to see giving up an out there, if it was intentional/by design, as it's going to take several, and as FeLo's had solid looks at Ishii and has an EBH in 8 of his last 9 games.

Nice baserunning by Freel all around, more garbage from Casey. 1-0 Reds' lead, but don't like playing for a single run there, if that was the call. Watching it again, looks like it was a hit-and-run IMO... which I don't think is good for the present game, despite the run, nor for the future inspiration it gives Miley to try and manufacture offense.

This is a terrible thought to have for such a nice guy, but Casey is the poster child for the Reds. Slow, lack of timely hitting, good attitude but too easy going to really fight for a game. That's Case. He can hit, but not consistantly and is always a threat for a twin killing with a runner at first because he most always grounds to the right side.

It's time to get what we can out of him. And if you had told me that a year ago that I would have thought that, I'd have called you crazy.

Beltran drove a 2-1 fastball into the LCF gap on a line, slicing down and away from Griffey. Griffey was already playing it at perfect depth, so he tracked it right-to-left 7 strides towards the gap and dove, catching it effortlessly in almost full extension. Matsui is horrible. The only reason he's playing is because the Mets paid him so much money. Very depressing.

He has some pop, averaged a EBH every 10 ab's last year... the year I cut him from Fantasy team because he stunk so bad.

That HR is Josh's fault.

Speaking of San Diego, I think Mike Cameron would be a great fit for that team. If I'm Kevin Towers, I'm on the phone with Minaya seeing if you can get him without giving up too much.

The Mets announcers mentioned yesterday that Dunn, Griffey, and Casey were essentially getting a "free look" at Koo because the game was already a blowout. Interesting to see if it pays off for us.

JR will double then Dunn will homer

If Junior doubles, then first will be open for Adam.

But that's moot anyway. If Jr is on second, that means he'll be in scoring position and we all know Adam just can't hit in that situation. He should try for a single.
