Yes..because Freel and Lopez can't be our starters.

DJ's release, if it's outright, is absurdist. However, the one positive aspect of it would be to provide Freel a place to play, and leadoff, everyday (2B), without stealing all-important ABs from Pena and Kearns. If his departure is instead used to give Bergolla ABs at 2B, while Freel still steals time from Austin and Wily Mo, it compounds what appears to be an already colossally stupid move.

Great point, and with Austin's continued frustration, there could be some serious long-term ramifications of this stupidity.

There's no reason IMO that Freel shouldn't start everyday now, and keep the outfield as is. For some reason I fear that Aurilia will be given back SS when he's off the DL, Lopez will be pushed to 2B, and we'll do some ridiculous OF rotation. All part of Dan O'Brien's 50 year plan, as outlined in his trapper keeper.

Hal says the Jiminez release was a popular clubhouse move...

Great, this clubhouse needs to be more comfortable and touchy-feely than it already was. Last I checked, this clubhouse loved Wilson's re-signing, Graves' and Casey's extensions and the acquisition of Eric Milton. Try addressing the inherently flawed design of the roster and pitching staff, rather than scapegoating a somewhat productive, affordable middle infielder who was basically relegated to a part-time role during our latest 16 of 20 losing streak.

We know Marty loves the move, and is thrilled to rip DJ, in the same way that he carried a flaming torch for Rich Aurilia and bad mouthed Felipe Lopez every chance he gets. This clubhouse and/or Marty loving a move is akin to a kiss of death, as I can't remember the last time either one got a single intuition right... ever.

Nah. I like Bergolla's speed at the top of the lineup. But, if they aren't going to split up the lefties, I'd switch Dunn and Casey. You mentioned the other night that the 5th spot leads off as many innings as the 1st spot, or something like that. Switching them moves Dunn up, which you like, while still allowing more RBI opps., which I like, from the 3 spot and it reduces Casey's GIDP opps which we all like.

Kearns goes down looking after a nice battle, where he was expecting an outer-half offspeed pitch and instead got locked up inside. Still, I think he went to school in that At Bat.

Kearns has Millwood's fastball timed and his slider figured out, after getting a good look at both in this protracted AB. Before the game is over I'd be willing to bet that he will jack one out to LCF, the F.O. should follow by releasing him, burning him, then benching him (in that order).

Seems at this juncture that most days we should feature a lineup consisting of, until further notice...

Freel 2B
Lopez SS
Dunn LF
WMP/Kearns RF
Griffey CF
Casey 1B
Randa 3B
LaRue/Valentin C

Ideally, we could eventually move Casey, save money and get the less expensive, potentially much more productive young tandem of WMP and Kearns in the lineup together at the same time with their brethren Dunn. That would allow for a lineup that's a nice mixture of R/L, which features power as well as some decent OBP/contact, which as mentioned is younger and less expensive. Anything which deprives Kearns and WMP (when healthy) of developmental time in the form of more ABs for Bergolla, or Freel playing RF etc... should be considered a capitol crime.

Harang's offseason conditioning programs have worked wonders for the fluidity of his motion, his mound stamina, his velocity, and the overall touch on/confidence in his pitches. Bergolla posted a .408 OBP at Billings in 2002, which makes his career OBP look a little better than it is. His walk rate has gone down each year(maybe because he was younger than his competition at each level?). His OBP was only .322 at Louisville with 4 walks in 120 atbats.

If the Reds continue to plop a currently overmatched Bergolla into the #2 slot, pretty soon they'll have four guys at the top of the lineup producing sub-.350 OBP's.

It sounds as if you advocate moving Dunn to 1B? I have no problem with that, except, it seems that it's going to be hard enough to keep Dunn as it is. I'd be wary of moving him to a position that he doesn't seem to like. Nothing wrong with dealing Casey though, but at this point, I have extreme reservations of the F.O. spending any savings wisely. I think the time to make this move has passed. It should have been done before Casey's option for '06 was picked up, IMO.

I totally agree with you on depriving Mo Pena and Kearns AB's. Freel/Bergolla can split time at 2B untill Pena or Aurilia comes back from the D.L. It's just my opinion, but as bad as this team is and with no realistic chance of competing, I'd let Bergolla get the starts at 2B. That way we can get a look at the kid and see how he reacts before he gets sent back down, but not at the expense of playing time for Kearns or Pena.

OnBaseMachine

You also overlooked the rest of his season in 2002 at Dayton. Combined, his walk rate was less than 2004, at 13.1. Even BA indicates that he's now "learning the value of taking a walk".

You mentioned that his OBP at Billings was BA inflated. I pointed out that he posted a respectable walk/PA rate.

His 4 walks in 118 PA shows me he isn't learning the value of a walk.

:)

Bergolla posted a .408 OBP at Billings in 2002, which makes his career OBP look a little better than it is. His walk rate has gone down each year(maybe because he was younger than his competition at each level?). His OBP was only .322 at Louisville with 4 walks in 120 atbats.

He isn't ready for the majors. JMO. I thought they should have kept him in Louisville to work on his plate discipline.

To borrow a term from BF, you have to look at the micro. I was really only refering to tonights lineup. ;) I agree with you that he needs to be at Louisville this season and maybe even Chattanooga for starters, but he isn't. If he's going to be in the Reds lineup, I'd prefer him in the top of the order. He'll get some protection and his speed/baserunning savvy will be a benefit to the Reds, if he can get on base. I think the protection will help him with his plate discipline. With the way the Reds season is going so far, I see no reason not to take a good look at the teams highest rated SS/2B prospect.

You bring up alot of very good and valid points OBM. I just think, as long as the kid is here, the Reds should take a good look at him.
