I still don't see how you can have a guy who is OPSing over 1.00 with an OB% of .415 batting 5th in this lineup. And he is 2nd on this team in steals too.

But then, I'm still waiting for that rabbit to come out of the worm hole. ;)

Same ole Aaron Boone, Mr All or Nothing. Looks like more Mr Nothing this year.

RedRoser
05-22-2005, 01:10 PM
And I don't see why Miley is still in the Reds dugout.
And that makes the answer to both our questions somewhat the same.
"He shouldn't be!" :bang:

Games getting ready to start and poor GAC is all alone in chat because I just left to turn on the TV in another room.

Ortiz picks Blake off first.

PuffyPig
05-22-2005, 01:25 PM
I actually still hold out hope that Ortiz can pitch OK this year. His stats are skewed (I hope) from that very bad start after he got off the DL. He's got a 3.63 ERA in the rest of his starts. This is an important start for him.

I guess it's come to this, but I'm really enjoying Dan Hoard doing the pbp on TV. Why oh why can't he do it every game? Here's an idea...move George down to radio as the third man on the WLW team. Marty would have him out of town in 6 innings.

Just kidding...

Two interesting things.

A pitching coach actually instructing a pitcher during a game who is having a hard time and little William Bergolla coming up again with 2 outs and a runner in scoring position. One worked and the other didn't.

On to the next inning, 2-0.

I agree but as long as he's up here he might as well play. It doesn't do much good having him on the bench. Plus, he's made some nice plays on defense. Let the kid enjoy his cup of coffee and let the team get a good look at him. It's not like the Reds are going to be challenging for the playoffs. Think of it as an early September call-up.

Starting Bergolla while hitting him in the 2-slot in the lineup is just a symptom of what's wrong with this team's management. It's pretty tough to maintain any credibility by positioning the release of a productive player as being performance-driven but to then replace him with a player who won't produce anything but Outs.

It pretty much shows that neither Miley or O'Brien know what's really wrong and have no idea whatsoever as to how to fix it.

I still think we should have tried to make a trade with the Braves for Wilson Betemit (his OPS is 1.028 right now). For the next two years he could post an OPS of .830-.860 while playing 3rd, 2nd, or SS. He put many years in the minors, and though new to the Majors is mature in age and ready to hit major league pitching right now. He's not their SS of the present or the future, so he's available. Actually, most every Brave has always been available, as they've had more roster changes over the last seven years than any team in all of baseball.

I agree Steel and I agree with M2 and others that Bergolla doesn't need to be here. But he is, and I don't really have a problem with him playing at this point in the season. I guess I'm just trying to find some kind of bright spot to this team and those are far and few between.

Just curious and this isn't meant to be argumentative, but who would you have playing 2B? With D'Lo gone and Freel hurt, I'm not sure they have any other options.

That's what happens when you carry your entire game in batting average. He should try laying off a pitch from time to time.

And BTW, his line in April was .295/.330/.557 for an OPS of .887. That hardly qualifies him as one of the best three in the game. Maybe top 20, but no better. In other words, he was hot for a couple of weeks and has doing nothing otherwise.

I guess the thing that really bothers me about the current condition of the Reds is there appears to be no one who sees any problems on this club. Lindner (can't spell) says, "that's baseball." Miley and O'Brien come up with generalities and then blame D'Angelo Jiminez for the losing streak. The players we have are just as bad. Casey and Graves, who seem to be team spokesmen, become critics of the other players and get called in for "advice" (I know this is fairly common, but those two wouldn't be on my list). Gullett is simply not quotable or just doesn't talk to the press.

So, we have a totally impossible situation that can only be cured by firing Miley, Gullett, and O'Brien. Then we need to rid ourselves of Casey (it pains me to say that because I like Sean), Graves, and anyone else we can get someone for (if indeed we can) and start over. Any lingering will just make it a longer time until we can legitimately win again.

Sorry, but I'm glad the fans are upset with Danny. It may send a message.

If you add up all his Runs Created since the start of the 2002 season (59.9 RC) and divide that number by his total plate appearances (421) then multiply THAT number by 600 you get 85.36 Runs Created per 600 TPA.

You'd be much better off to just say, "Yeah, he's not very good right now."

The more consistent his playing time gets, the worse he's become. Go figure.

And using your timeline, if Lane gets consistent AB for the next couple seasons, he might be really good by age 30 or 31. Yippee.
