CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Eric Milton, the National League's leader in homers allowed, starts for the struggling Cincinnati Reds on Monday against the power-hungry Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

Milton (2-5, 7.16 ERA) has been a major disappointment after inking a three-year, $25.5 million contract with Cincinnati this winter. The veteran lefthander has allowed a league-high 15 homers and has surrendered six runs or more in four of his last five outings.

In this one, Milton faces a Nationals offense that has managed just nine homers in 20 games this month. Washington scored a total of one run in dropping the first two games of its weekend series with Toronto, but pounded out 13 hits in a 9-2 victory on Sunday.

Washington sends Esteban Loaiza (1-2, 3.08) to the mound as the veteran righthander looks to beat the Reds for the first time in more than eight seasons. His only victory against Cincinnati came on April 17, 1997 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Loaiza has held opponents to three runs or fewer in eight straight starts, including Wednesday against Milwaukee when he tossed eight scoreless innings but did not factor in the 1-0 loss.

The Reds dropped two of three this weekend to the Cleveland Indians, and have lost six of their last seven games overall. Cincinnati is 0-8-3 in its last 11 series since taking two of three from Houston from April 15-17.

wathced about 5 starts from Loaiza today. righters, he likes going cutter, slider, slider, sinker. lefties slider, slider, sinker, four-seamer. then when runners get on it's almost entirely cutters and slider to righties. sinkers and sliders to lefties. when he gets a lefty 0-2, he likes throwing a 4 seamer. i think he does that with Dunn or Griffey, they'll hit the ball a long way.

throws cutter: 32.6%, 86-89 MPH, sits at 88
slider: 22.8%, 84-86 MPH, sits at 86
sinker: 29.3%, 88-90 MPH, sits at 88
four-seamer: 10.9%, 90-92 MPH, sits at 91
curveball: 3.2%, 77-78 MPH, sits at 77

I agree Milton looks different today.

I think it's a matter of him working backwards. He's starting an overanxious team off with offspeed pitches (curve/change) then spotting his fastball, after getting ahead in the count. Probably worth a try, especially against a trigger happy Nats' lineup... though it may not work more than a single time through the order, unless he mixes it up more. We've seen a season worth of Milton trying to establish/get ahead with his velocity/location challenged fastball early in the count, and we've seen what happens when he's forced to resort to serving it up when behind in the count. Looks like a conscious attempt to get ahead in the counts with offspeed selections, and keeping batters off balance from there.

This Bergolla nonsense is working out nicely. He's been a 1 man rally-killer in each of his starts, and you can't even hide him in the 8 hole. He's so overmatched, that if he doesn't make contact on a first pitch fastball, you can usually mark it down as an AB where he's fortunate to get the ball out of the infield. What a waste of time and stunting of development. Yet another reason you don't just release 2B's who average 760+OPS over the course of multiple seasons (unless you like the current 118OBP, 235OPS which has taken it's place). At least someone apparently informed Miley that he's not a #2 hitter simply because he's speedy and plays middle infield.

Milton with an opposite field hit, scoring Kearns. 1-0 Reds.

That's true, but I was assuming that the Welsh/Grande love-in meant that they think teams will be lining up to get him in the next ten days at full freight. After the 10 days pass and he can be signed for the minimum, yes, he will get a job somewhere. Teams do that. But Graves before then for his full freight? No. No way.

Agreed, he might have some value at the league minimum if he can his velocity up and his head on straight, but he is dead weight to ANY team (even the Yankees) at his current salary and level of performance. Which shows just how monumentally stupid it is for a relatively low budget franchise to hand out big long-term contracts to mediocre talent that's easily replaceable. I mean, if the Yankees gave this contract to Graves, we'd say how stupid they were. But when we do it, it strangles the franchise for years. Just can't continue to make these kinds of errors in judgment.

0 BB/4 K

I'm concerned this is going to be a Reith-type scarring for him in terms of his future with the club. Why they just can't put Freel at 2B, Lopez at SS, and keep the OF as is (eventually with Pena returning) is beyond me.

Game note: As Freel grounds out to third to end the inning...

Any time I see on gameday that Freel grounds out to third base, I imagine it being a close out at first. Could someone indulge me if there is any truth to the assumption?
Yes, yes there is.

For the record, I am not, nor have I ever been gay.

That being said, I am comfortable enough in my own manhood to admire another man's taste in haircuts and (in JimBo's case) choice in pants.

Now THAT being said, I do have a non-sexual mancrush on Johnny Damon.

I am suddenly finding Phil even more desirable than usual.

If that's even possible.

Milton said he needed one good start to get untracked. Hope this is it. Even if untracked means a 4.95 era - anything under 5 looks really good to me nowadays.

Time for a ride on Space Mountain.
