Washington (24-21) at Cincinnati (16-28), 7:10 pm EDT

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Livan Hernandez seeks his seventh consecutive victory when the Washington Nationals play the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.

Hernandez (6-2, 3.69 ERA) is the first pitcher in franchise history to win six straight starts since Javier Vazquez in 2001 for the-then Montreal Expos. The club record is eight straight winning starts, set by Pedro Martinez in 1997 and Charlie Lea in 1983.

Hernandez allowed a run and seven hits in six innings in a 3-2 triumph against the Milwaukee Brewers last Wednesday. The 30-year-old righthander hasn't beaten the Reds since 2000 and is 2-4 with a 4.99 ERA in eight career games against them.

The Reds posted a 5-3 victory in the series opener on Monday. Eric Milton pitched eight innings and allowed one earned run.

The 29-year-old Milton was the first Cincinnati lefthander to go that deep into a game since Lance Davis pitched a complete game against Detroit on September 16, 2001.

Jason LaRue, who entered the game batting .196, had three hits, including his second homer, and drove in two runs for the Reds.

Brandon Claussen (1-3, 4.71) will make his first start since leaving his May 10 start against San Diego in the fourth inning with a left ankle sprain.

The lefthander, making his first career appearance against the Nationals, is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in three home starts this season.

I thought that one of the reasons that Freel makes sense at lead off was so he could steal bases?

Yes, there's a risk he might be thrown out, but you can't steal without some risk.

70% is about break even. 75% is helpful, but not to the point that you don't want to take things like...oh...Catcher into account.;)

Schneider is one of the best throwing Catchers in Major League Baseball. To indiscriminately run on the guy, your normal SB success rate better be "Eric Davis in his prime". Otherwise, you just did a Dumb Thing.

No MLB Manager with any intelligence should be giving anyone the green light with Brian Schneider catching or indiscriminately call for a SB with none Out in the first Inning.

But then, we don't have a MLB manager. So, oh well.

But why would it matter Raisor? It's still going to be sucessful attempts vs. the outs created in relation to runs scored. The type of offense being played shouldn't factor into it. Should it?

Yes, because the "loss" for a CS depends on what chance the guy had of scoring on first vs second base. If you knew the next batter would always hit a HR, it would be lunacy to run since there would be no gain in a SB there, and any CS would cost 1 run. So the bigger the SLG of the league, the easier to score from first and the less value a successful SB has.

No MLB Manager with any intelligence should be giving anyone the green light with Brian Schneider catching or indiscriminately call for a SB with none Out in the first Inning.

But then, we don't have a MLB manager. So, oh well.

Could be.

But I the Freel CS-fest tonight really highlights the concept that a player or manager has to know who he's going up against. Freel's CS % coming into the game might have been above 70%, but he's not a 70% basestealer versus a guy like Schneider. Very very few people are.

I see what your saying OC but the expected runs will always be greater the further along the runners are regardless of SLG. In otherwords, it will always be easier to score from second than it will from first. I'm not sure you can factor in SLG into stolen base percentage in a meaningful way. I may be wrong though, I'm just thinking out loud here. Good post.

True a successful CS is always a plus, but the value of the CS is the difference between the value of the current situation and the one after the CS. Imagine a league where the average SLG is, say 800. A man on first would be pretty likely to score, say 70 pct. if the chance to score on secons is 75 pct, then the max gain is 5 pct, the max loss 70 pct. You better make it almost all the time.

Then we move to a pitchers league where the average SLG is 150. You might have a 10 pct chance to score from first, and a 25 pct from second. So the gain is 15 and the loss only 10. Get on your track shoes!

I suppose it doesn't matter that he makes an out less than anyone else on the team except Ryan Freel, or that he leads the NL in HR's and is in the top 10 in OBP and SLG. Wagner isn't getting the shot because he falls in love with his slider. When hitters know it is coming they can lay off it. When he learns to trust his fastball more, he'll get that shot. takes some maturity. I think we sometimes forget just how young Wags still is.

I don't agree with the thinking. I think it's time for Wagner to take his lumps. Sure he might struggle, but he can also get out of tough situations easier than most of our other pitchers.

Miley has decided that what this team needs is the excitement of a bottom of the 9th walk-off something to other. ;)

LuLo almost made that come true.

Bottom of the 9th:

Carroll at SS, Harris at 2B. Cordero still pitching.

LaRue flies out. 1 out.

L.Lopez almost hit one out, but it was caught. 2 out.

Valentin is PHing for Weathers. He pops up, 3 outs.

Coffey warming in the bullpen. Time for free baseball!!

Quick question. Did they really remove the chairs from the clubhouse?

I'm not saying i agree with it either, but i bet it is the reason. I'd ease him into the role.

Is that any different than Graves relying on his unsinking sinker, curve ball that spins and 85 mph fastball?

Well, we are talking about the Reds here, so it is certainly reasonable to believe that they might be using faulty thinking.

We lose this game I blame it all on the chairs

You can't because they're gone now.

You can only blame it on the absence of the chairs.;)

If I'm Griffey, I use my multi-millions to order a new chair every day of the week. Have it delivered, wait for Miley to remove it, then order another one...

Eventually we'll show up at the ballpark and find that all the Scout seats now have reclining functions.

Better...order a chair for each team member but only get rocking chairs for the coaching stuff :D

Yes.

A guy on the reds board took a tour of the clubhouse and posted some pics on a website. He had a few of Dunns chair. It's a nice chair. I was going to post a picture of it yesterday but he had already removed the pics. I did steal a good one for my current wallpaper though. No. It wasn't of Dunn's chair. :)
