Kearns get robbed of a hit from Sanchez.

Bat atbat from Dunn. Go back to your patient approach. Took the first 2 pitches for balls and then tried to pull a pitch down and away and hit a weak grounder to 2nd. Reminded me of a Casey atbat.

Dunn OBP has dropped from from .440 to .405 in the last week and a half.

Most, but not all. I understand catching Ramirez since he speaks no english, but Ortiz speaks some english so there's no reason not to start LaRue unless he is hurting. His bat at least has a pulse lately.

Not sure what Lawton was thinking but he was "out from here to there" and didn't even bother sliding.

If that was me out there instead of Lopez, I might have just clocked Lawton...and not with a stopwatch if you catch my meaning.

I had that happen to me in a ballgame while fielding 2nd. Runner didn't bother to slide and I took a knee to the face because of it.

Didn't know that Steel, hope I never find out. That was just a strange play and then I had to step out so I missed the replay but thats how people get hurt.

Yeah. I can more understand contact like that when a guy's trying to break up a DP with a slide. But it looked to me that Lawton knew he was going to be out and just chose to avoid sliding in order to see if contact would cause Lopez to drop the ball.

Now, that's fine if it's the Catcher you're barrelling into. There's at least an expectation of contact in those situations. But Lopez was completely unprotected. I guess we'll never know for sure, but having experienced the worst-case result personally, it looked like a pretty dirty play.

Rusty Kuntz and, I think it was John Russell were talking to Lawton about it in the dugout. Apparently they didn't like it either. Like you mentioned, breaking up a DP is one thing, that was quiet another IMO.

Yeah. They were probably talking to him about the potential for injury to him. But if that throw were a foot further toward the first base side of the bag, that might have been the last we saw of Lopez for two months. And he wouldn't have been able to chew solid food for about half that time.

Ok, they just showed the replay of Lawton's non-slide. Do you think it deserves a heater in the ribs the next time Lawton comes to bat? And it's a good thing the throw down from Valentin was a poor one or we'd be seeing Aurilia at SS.

I think he should be hit for what he did after that homer last night. I've heard of admiring homeruns, but what he did was ridiculous. He stood in the box for a good 5-10 seconds and then flipped his bat and came within inches of hitting Valentin and the ump with it.

If he didn't come up there with Runners on Base or if the game was out of hand, I'd throw one right under his armpit. As it is, I'd wait for the next best opporunity (read: that doesn't negatively effect the game) and throw my first pitch behind his head.

I want to see what Miley does in the 9th. IMO, going with Weathers is a mistake. It would be like he's INSISTING that we have a defined "closer." Clearly, right now, there isn't an individual on the roster that fits the classic mold (an overrated position IMO anyway).

I'd stick with Mercker to start the 9th and then probably go to Wagner. I don't have a problem with Miley bringing Weathers in to pitch-- even to close, but I just hope that he doesn't replace the "Well, Danny Graves is our closer" flawed logic with a newfound flawed logic.

When someone discovers what is so freaking hard about holding a lead just because its the ninth inning, they'll make a mint.

I realize he's already technically "blown" the save, but if Wagner gets that 3rd out and strands the runner, that shows me alot. There's a difference between a "Blown" save that leaves you tied and a blown save that leaves you hopeless.

I certainly can't call that a "good" inning from Wagner, but he showed some cojones there. And the thing i like about him is that you don't feel like he "escapes" those situations. You feel like he actually PITCHES his way out of the jam. Nicely done.

They all had flashes of brilliance, or good seasons, but in the long run there have only really been three uber successful closers for the Reds in the era of the closer, those being John Franco, Randy Myers, and the Reds' all-time saves leader Danny Graves, and I don't count Graves.

GoReds
05-27-2005, 09:50 PM
Edskin, no offense, but Mercker looked like he was tossing softballs up there. Two looooong drives to center.

Both of Wagner's hits were off balance, bloop shots to right center. Besides, if Freel doesn't rush the throw, Ryan doesn't go 0 for 6 in save chances.

TC-- I posted the original thought BEFORE the pitching change. It's more the theory-- why do managers INSIST on yanking an effective pitcher simply to put in a "closer" to start the 9th. Unless you have some ridiculous freak like Gagne, I don't put any stock into closers as a whole.

I think they are a manager's ultimate crutch/scapegoat.

Dibble was most effective as a set-up man. If I remember correctly, at that time, he had the highest K/9 IP of anyone in history. Dibble was only a closer for what, two seasons? And his arm began to fall apart at the end of that second season.

Not disputing that at all Edskin.........especially in the last couple of years when Graves would come in after the previous set up man had pitched good enough to be allowed to try and close. I think mentally though some pitchers do not handle the 9th as well as the 8th.

As far as Dibble is concerned....i still vividly remember him and Charlton blowing something like 15 saves between them while saving a combined 50.

They blew some big 9th inning leads (and not just that Bonilla homer vs NYM in the 9th) games against PITT (3 run lead....2 outs....Charlton blew it) Chalrton blew some against ATL also. They were better set up men than closers for sure.
