Folks, it makes sense that Randa gets the day off on a day game after a night game, especially since his foot problem is still noticable. (Several people, including Marty, have commented on his hobbling when he runs.) So someone has to fill in--either Rich Aurilia or Luis Lopez. I agree with what others--I think it was Steel and WOY--have said that you don't want to call up Encarnacion too soon and start his arbitration clock. So you have to play one of the utility infielders. And as long as Aurilia is being used as a utility infielder--which is the role we had all envisioned for him when he signed here--I have no problem with him playing.

The upside is the Bucs have two Aurilia's in the lineup today, Wigginton and Wilson. It's like the $1.98 Beauty Show out there.

On a separate note, wouldn't it be standard old school management to bat the guy leading the NL in homers in the #4 slot? Miley's a gomer no matter what stick you measure him with.

41 hits in 115 AB for a .357 avg.; YTD prior to series 355/1450, a .245 average. The team average has increased seven points off of our chuckers.

Please try. Here's what I wrote (and I'm a novice at best)... and, of course, I had the audacity to disagree with Howsam:

"RBI is a ridiculous stat to gage a player's performance. The batter, whether a good one or a bad one, has absolutely no control over whether or not there are runners on base when he's at the plate. In addition, a batter is pitched to differently if there are guys on base or in scoring position vs the bases being empty.

In addition, Adam Dunn has received little to no protection behind him in the order this year, which also affects how he's pitched."

Claussen's thrown 70 pitches after 5

His ERA has now snuck below 4 for the season to 3.94.

Don't look now, but that makes two Reds starters who have ERA's below the league average. And they are both young, cheap, and improving. Unlike a pair (except Milton is still relatively young) who is expensive and ineffective and could be on someone else's payroll right now.

He has been chasing a lot of bad pitches lately. Especially early in the count. That's something he rarely does. .414 OBP is great, but just two weeks ago it was .440.

May 29, 1921: Redland Field Cincinnati.

Reds were leading the Pirates 2-1 heading into the top of the 9th. Clive Barnhard hit a ball that rolled under a tarp in right field. Pat Duncan, who for some reason was in right that day, was trying to retrieve the ball from under the tarp. A boy jumped under the tarp, retrieved the ball and ran off with it. While all this was going on, Barnhard crossed the plate, was awarded a HR, and the game was tied.

The Reds could do nothing in the bottom of the ninth, so the game went on until the 13th inning. Reds won 4-3.

"I wanted one day. [The Reds] wanted more," Aurilia said. "I don't know if they were too happy about that. But I just said, 'I'll go for one day,' because I knew I wasn't going to get activated unless I went."

Exactly. That's what I was saying a little while ago. It wouldn't surprise me if Miley or one of the coaches is telling him to swing early to avoid striking out.

Freel double scores LaRue. Freel to 3rd on the throw.

Lopez gets ahead 2-0, called strike, ball 3, borderline pitch called strike 2, line drive caught by the RFer.
