View Full Version : Memorial Day Melee, Reds vs Astros 5-30-05

Joseph

Reds ace Aaron Harang faces Hall of Famer Roger Clemens in Houston. Harang, by far the Reds best starter this season, is off to a 3-2 start with a 3.32 ERA and 47 K's. He's now over his flu that caused him to miss his last start.

Clemens, coming off a Cy Young season and a strained groin suffered in his last start, is also 3-2 with a stellar 1.19 ERA and 69 K's.

Additional gamenotes:

Streaking:
Felipe Lopez has a career high 11 game hitting streak. Also streaking, catcher Jason LaRue who went 3-4 with a HR and a double to extend his streak to 8 straight games. Sean Casey is also on a season high 6 game hitting streak.

Griffey has 6 HR in 81 career AB's against Clemens. HoFer vs HoFer is always a fun matchup to watch.

A rare chance to actually WATCH the Reds.

BTW,

Houston announcers just said ...
the Reds are a good offensive team. If they could just get good performance from their pitchers, they'd be tough to beat.

AND Joe Randa is one of two players who have hit HRs off of Clemens this season.

Joseph

Yep. Hitters have described it as somthing akin to hitting a shot put and the "heavy" pitches tend to have a downward motion- which is probably why the hitters perceive it to be "heavy" as they can't make consistent square contact.

You can throw 88 MPH and still have hitters perceive that your pitches are "heavy".

I can't believe that Miley lifted Harang, as well as he is pitching. Regardless of the pitch count, he hasn't had any tough innings and there's no reason to think he couldn't pitch a couple more. I surely hope this doesn't come back and bite.

Coffey is only keeping things warm for Webber when he comes back.

Coffey is doing what most young pitchers do when they get to the bigs: taking his lumps and figuring things out. His first few appearences were beyond awful as he realized that there's a big difference between the best hitters in AAA and the worst hitters in the show.

His velocity seems to be coming back, and he's routinely hitting 93-94 on the gun with his fastball now.

I think they're doing the right thing with Coffey: using him in these late-inning mop up situations when the game is out of hand in one direction or the other. Building his confidence and giving him experience in dealing with major league hitters. They're putting him in a position to be successful, something this franchise has been awful at in recent memory.

I'd take Coffey over Weber any day of the week.

Tony Cloninger
05-30-2005, 04:57 PM
