Lopez still in the 7th hole....last night didn't have success there, but previously had been successful in the 2 hole -- at least he's playing...

I don't know....

What's the line on how many HRs Milton will give up tonight?

I think maybe Dunn should bat 8th. That way he'd walk all the time.

Miley should treat it like "playing around" in Gin Rummy. Just move Dunn so far down in the lineup that he eventually ends up batting third.

Scored a ton of runs against one of the few teams with pitching as bad as the reds, so this must be the best lineup, right?

IslandRed

And I don't care for the in-between approach with Dunn, moving him down to the six hole. Look, if you don't think he can hit lefties, sit him and put Kearns in the lineup. I'd hate that too (because I don't think Dunn should be platooned, for crying out loud) but at least there would be some logic there.

Waechter is a righty.

I think this lineup is just fine. You can quibble that Lopez and Dunn should hit higher but Randa is hot now and Dunn is cold, so I can live with the batting order.

Now, the fellow on the mound for the Reds, that's a cause for concern. . . .

As far as the lineup discussion, I don't care how the lineup is arranged, as long as Aurilia isn't in it.

That was a great lineup last night, and to see it repeated, I'm shocked. I didn't think Miley was capable of making a good decision.

C'mon, Milton. Toss a quality start tonight (six+ innings w/ 3 earned runs or less).

Milton just has no control, whatsoever.

The guy has to be injured, or there's something dreadfully wrong with his mechanics.

I think Gullett's been spoon-fed so many horrible pitchers over the years, that he's completely forgotten what a good pitcher looks like. He needs a change of scenery.

When Milton throws a ball, it's not even close to the strikezone, and when he throws a strike, it's dead-center middle of the zone.

There's got to be a mechanical reason for him to be that horrible. He's not a bad pitcher.

We need a new pitching coach.

Wholesale firing of management throughout the organization, but it will have to be during the offseason when contracts are up with coaches from other clubs.

But IF your pitching coach tells him to shorten his stride, or some such thingy and it screws the pitcher up, what is the player to do? Coach definitely have a purpose and influence.

I am a strident Gully fan, but I do believe that years upon years of woeful performance need to be blamed on somebody.....the ONLY constant has been Gullett.

Joe Randa hit that homer, but he needs to thank Miley and Freel for it. Waechter was so worried about Freel and the 1-1 "great running count" that he rushed to the plate and grooved a slider.

Gullett needs a change of scenery.

I hate to say this, but outside of the order of the hitters, and the fact that LaRue is still in it, I really like this line up.

I am in the camp that would switch Lopez and Randa. Randa, seems to me, has only been effective so far when he has hit it out. He can do that from 2nd or 7th in the order. I want two fairly fast .300 hitters at the top of my line up.

Also, does anybody agree that Freel seems much more comfortable in the field right now, now that he starts everyday at 2nd. He just seems to be much more deliberate and relaxed.

Eric_Davis

A 1-2-3 inning by Milton.

Nice job. And his pitches were a little tighter on the edge of the strike zone.

Probably luck, as I doubt he all of a sudden improved his mechanics between innings.

That Colorado outing by Milton wasn't bad. He also had a decent start before that. He's got to step up and dominate these bad teams. That's what he's getting paid for, as you said, regardless of the hitting coach.

Pete Rose didn't wait for the right coach to come along to fix his mechanics...he worked on it himself til he got it right (which was every day).

Marc D

I'm just saying that if I was a ML pitcher and had a track record of at least moderate success and a new coach changes things and I get shelled like Milton has, well then screw his teaching I'm going back to what I've been doing my whole life.

What's he gonna do not start Milton or yank him for his mechanics?

Good point Marc, but some players aren't like that.....they have fragile mechanics and they need constant help. Remember that JR has to call Dad now and then.

Also, a pitcher can get squeezed by his manager. Like Miley said they told Milton to throw more curve balls and to throw a sinker (he has not used before).

What does a pitcher being paid 7 mill a year do when his boss says to do something? I am not sure what Milton has done.

But the guy was 14-6 for the Phillies last year.....he is capable of winning ball games.

Thats obviously the main problem here and Dave and his staff are on it, sometimes I just can't figure out why you guys get so bent out of shape.

No matter how bad a team they are you simply cannot throw down the middle to a major league hitter. This creates serious problems for pitchers who cannot throw a strike any other way.

REDS are fighting for Miley's job here...

Just don't know if that is a good thing... :

Nah, they're succeeding despite Daves attempt to pull strings.

1st time the REDS have hit 5 HRs in a game this year.

REDS have hit 4 HRs in a game only one time prior to tonight.
* Apr. 20 vs. Pirates. Pena & Aurilia... each had 2 HRs and 3 RBIs in a 6-4 win.

The REDS hit 5 HRs in a game 1 time last year (the most for a single game).
* May 31 @ Marlins. Casey(2), Pena, Larkin & Griffey hit HRs in a 9-7 win.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Reds had a Baez to come in and put out the fire?

RA has seen a total of 3 pitches in his two ABs. I'm sure he is bit rusty since he didn't play last night

They oughta play the Green Giant jingle over the PA when he comes up

Good thing they double switched Aurilia into the game. There is no way the pitchers would have put together better at bats then the lasers Aurilia hit. It was just dumb luck that the Rays were positioned correctly to catch those mile high lasers he hit.

Jacob Cruz has become a pretty good pinch-hitter.

Classic move in the days of 10 pitchers was to have one guy who could rake and that's all he did.

And tell dirty jokes.

Funny, the Dodgers-Marlins trade last year has ended up being a pretty good trade for the Dodgers. Mota has been awful for the Marlins with an ERA approaching 6.00. Loduca's OPSing all of .713 this year. Choi isn't mich better and Werth has been below average, but Brad Penny is pitching well this year with an ERA of 3.67 in 56 innings.

I bet Baez is glad he most likely won't have to face Pena or Dunn

7 saves, 5 blown saves, killer stuff.

Saving games isn't for everyone.

.585 OPS Against. That's gettin' it done. No matter the "saves" stat.

You can get cheap saves.

It's pretty hard to get a cheap blown save.

If you think the job of the closer is to close games, Baez is definitely not getting it done.

Unless that % improves, he'd make a killer set-up man.

Another 2004 trade tidbit:

Brad Halsey ERA: 3.48

Randy Johnson ERA: 4.03

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
