View Full Version : 6/10 Gamethread Reds vs. Orioles

Ok, my gamethreads have been lucky last few nights. Let's see if it sticks.

From Yahoo...

Still searching for their first interleague series win of the season, the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles open a three-game set with the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

The Orioles lead the East by three games, thanks in no part to their 2-4 record in interleague play.

Baltimore's offense was handcuffed by Pittsburgh's Kip Wells as the Orioles lost their second straight game to the Pirates 6-1 on Wednesday.

The Orioles lost for the first time in nine road series this season (6-1-2), and in 14 road series (10-1-3) since losing two of three at Texas last Aug. 27-29.

``We've got to pick it up, we've got to go out and win, and there's no question this team will do that, this team is like that,'' Baltimore manager Lee Mazzilli said.

The streak of 13 consecutive road series without a loss was the majors' longest since Atlanta had a 16-series run in 2002. The road streak was one short of Baltimore's franchise best of 14 straight in 1983.

The Orioles hope to have second baseman Brian Roberts back in the lineup as they finish up a 13-game trip against the Reds.

Roberts has missed eight consecutive starts with a shoulder injury. He's been used as a pinch-hitter over the last two games, a sign that he may be getting ready to rejoin Baltimore's lineup.

Roberts doubled in his only at-bat Wednesday to raise his AL-leading batting average to .369. He leads Baltimore with 13 stolen bases and his 12 homers are second on the team to Miguel Tejada's 17.

The Orioles take on a Cincinnati squad that is coming off a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Luke Hudson won his season debut with six solid innings, and the suddenly revived Reds routed the Devil Rays 14-5 on Thursday.

``We've got some confidence going,'' Cincinnati first baseman Sean Casey said.

The Reds rallied from five-run deficits in each of the first two games of the series, the first time they'd done so since 1918.

Pena's .839 SL % suggests he has some ability in that area. I have no problem hitting Pena in front of Dunn, as it helps the L-R thing too. But Dunn should be 3rd, so the issue shouldn't come up.

Lately, Dunn just can't seem to lay off that down and away pitch(that's where gameday located the pitch). He tries to pull it everytime and it ends up as a weak groundout. I have no idea why he's been chasing that pitch.

I was reading the Reds Live version of the game thread. Dunn is getting mildly critcised for not getting that run in. That's funny because last inning LaRue, Harang, and Freel all failed to get a runner in with the bases loaded and now Felipe strands a runner. But you guessed it, out of those five players-- Dunn is the one that gets the blame.

Kearns isn't slugging worth anything. That is why he isn't in the lineup. Kearns probably softly lines out, K's like Pena or grounds out. Intill he starts slugging, no Kearns. With Pena, you have to take the bad with the good.

Wish Dunn would have givin way to a right hander.wouldn't have made a difference. Ryan didn't have much trouble with Lopez or Larue

Notice how differently the game was managed the last 3 innings. Mazilli used a bunch a different pitchers and got no bad matchups. Having Mercker pitch to Mora and Tejada in was a matchup in favor of the O's and they took advantage of it.

And the three game winning streak comes to a halt.

Oh well, I'm there tomorrow and they can start another one.

I only loath the close ones we lose. So I get home and my wife is snoring away and where am I? Down on the computer. She always wakes up when I come to bed and then she will take an hour or so to get back to sleep. Pretty soon I'm heading in there anyway. I hate to do that to her though, since she has to get up at 6:00. You'd think that after spending a few hours with these folks I could avoid the site until tomorrow. :)

I just got online. Can someone please explain to me the Mercker situation? In my opinion it was one of the worst decisions I've seen in awhile, and that's saying something with Miley. Please, anyone explain that one to me and make sense and I'll give you a dollar or some leftover pizza that I ate at pizza hut.

Anyone? Someone explain that I missed something that they said on radio or tv? It looks like he was brought in for Newhan alone? Is that the dumbest move you've seen? Was Wagner worn out for some dumb reason? Weathers?

Merker pitched the inning before Wagner (the 8th). He gave up one run on two hits and pitched the entire inning. He shouldn't have given up a run because the second double was a routine line-drive that any left fielder should have no problem catching, yet Dunn missed it and likely cost us the game.

Wagner pitched a scoreless ninth and looked good. If there was average fielding the relievers would have given up no runs.

I don't think there was anything wrong with what Miley called in the inning.

Ok, explain how though? I don't really care about what ACTUALLY happened. I care about a manager putting players in bad situations. Why was Mercker brought in for a .200 hitter, Melvin Mora, and Miguel Tejada? When Ryan Wagner or David Weathers were ready to pitch.

I appreciate your confidence, but I really don't hit major league pitching that well. Anything over 60 mph and I'm flailing. Dunn was probably a better choice.

In Dunn's defense (we were sitting right next to the batter's eye and had a good view), that ball was scorched and seemed to kick it up to mach speed at the last second.

The ball appeared to have sliced a bit too and it was a tough chance, but still his effort on it was embarrassing for a major leaguer.

Historically, Merker has been about the same pitcher against lefties and righties so this was not a situation he would likely fail in. He is not your typical lefty pitcher and he should not be used as one. I don't see how it was such a poor move by Miley.
