true, but Pena sucks against RH pitchers and Smoltz has a nasty slider. I doubt he even throws a strike against Pena. Why should he?

Anyone else concerned about Claussen? I hope he has a good game. Here is something interesting.

IP ERA K/9 K/BB FIP Xr Xr/9
48 3.94 5.81 1.72 4.93 28.39 5.32

This is an estimate of Xr, but I've found that it closely follows era in most pitchers. Hopefully he keeps up whatever he's doing to get out of jams.

Maybe he won't. Maybe the Braves already know the book on Pena. But I doubt it. And Smoltz doesn't throw much more than the fastball and slider anymore. It is just a hunch, but I have a feeling Smoltz is due to surrender some gopher balls.

I think the idea is that guys like Neifi Perez are less likely to beat you than guys like Barry Bonds, so the manager isn't going to spit into the wind and take on a Bonds (or others of his ilk) when they have a better chance against small fry like Neifi.

Yeah, I've heard coaches say that about walking guys like Bonds (in terms of strategy). But I'm talking about when they say it, as if to say, "we aren't going to be beat by their superstar." Maybe they still mean it in the original sense. Oh well. Maybe I'm just off my rocker.

You know what the sad thing about tonight is. Claussen wasn't firing on all cylinders tonight like he was against the Orioles, gave up to many dongs and hits, but got the K's when needed and almost got the QS.

Eric Milton would kill for a start like this. It just shows what a nightmare this year has been for Eric, he probably worships Claussen now hoping some of that good luck will rub off on him ;)

Don't see this as a big problem unless he tore up a labrum. Let him replace Nelson as closer in AA next year. Though if they continue to start him, he may get seriously injured.

I see it as a big problem. An endemic problem.

Kid comes in, healthy, able to pitch, puts up solid numbers.

Then gets injured.

If he has such poor mechanics, then it's the Reds job to fix those right when he signs. That's what the developmental and instructional leagues are for.

Just very frustrated, Pauly was an excellent prospect for the Reds who's now out for the year. Not a pretty picture.

I've never seen his mechanics, so I'll just take your word for it. But there are always small tweeks good coaches can do. A move here, more leg motion here, move the release point slightly one way or another.

I understand arm injuries are a part of baseball, but the rash of high profile pitching prospects in the last couple of years for the Reds is just over the top.

Hall, Basham, Dumatrait, Gruler, Howington, Mattox, Pauly.

I'm sure I've missed a few. Everyone one of those guys was a top Reds prospect when he got hurt.

I just see a problem, a trend there, and I'm frustrated by it.

Bingo. It is the desperation for starting pitching that let the Reds take a fireballing,2 pitch pitcher with violent pitching mechanics and try to "teach" him a changeup that he barely used and probably will never use correctly then try and make him a starter. I smell Nearhrig over that one because it fits from the Bowden era bombouts.

Have I ever mentioned I hate when the infield is played in?Been starting to rethink that strategy, esp. with two runners in scoring position. Medium depth close enough to throw out the runner at the plate, but on the cut in the grass, you might just as well throw it in underhand.

On another note, the 2004 Braves are making the Reds look silly the way teams use to make them silly for years. Lesson, there is hope for a sad sack franchise like ours, but its not gonna come with the folks currently financing and running the ship.

Thanks for getting to that one before I could. I don't think I would have been as diplomatic.

Folks, there is nothing wrong with giving your top pinch-hitter (especially one who is hitting almost .300) an occasional start, especially when the roster is depleted by nagging injuries and a leave of absence. The occasional start helps keep him sharp, and also serves as a reward for a job well done.

Now that the cat's out of the bag, the milk has been spilt, the Cheerios have been peed in, or whatever cliche you can stand, I agree, no problem giving Cruz a start.

The wise one finds a way to not end up in this spot to begin with.

No, that's not how I meant it at all. What I mean is that Austin Kearns played his way to AAA. And he did so before the Aurilia injury or the death of Casey's cousin. So the roster is not depleted because Kearns got sent to Louisville.

Ehh...I've had good food and not so good food there.

My maxim is that any Mexican restaurant had better have real Mexicans in it. We have a local restaurant around here. The first time I went there, there were four men in a booth (including one who looked like Freddy Fender's immensely large brother), speaking Spanish, drinking Dos Equis XX, and watching soccer (futbol) on Telemundo. I immediately said to myself, "This is an authentic Mexican restaurant."

One of the places where I once waited tables, the one with the same name as the Reds' 47th round draft pick, used to have a lot of Mexican dishes on the menu. Now this was the 80s and they were also selling Michelob as a "premium" beer, so the entire concept of authentic had yet to be discovered. People would sometimes ask me about the Mexican dishes, which consisted of gobs of melted Monterrey Jack cheese and something under it, and I'd tell them that we specialized in Mexican-Irish fusion cooking. You'd be amazed at how many people accept that as a reasonable statement and order the Mexican dishes saying, "Well then, I've got to try those enchiladas."

People love that melted cheese.

I worked at a Mexican place for 4 years. We used to joke that people ordered the following. Squares, Deep Fried Squares, Triangles, Tubes, or Stacks. Either way, the insides were always the same. They also called "quesadillas" "durangos" and "quesadillas" were deep fried "triangles". Basically big old deep fried empanadas with whatever you want in them.

It was a CO-OP and the source of the "when you call me an... it makes me feel like ....." nonsense that I was spouting the other day.
