Press release ...

At a press conference today at 3:00 p.m. ET in the field level interview room at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds general manager Dan O'Brien will announce Jerry Narron as interim field manager for the remainder of the 2005 season.
Narron replaces Dave Miley, who earlier today was relieved of his duties along with pitching coach Don Gullett.
Through the end of this season, Vern Ruhle will assume Gullett's duties as pitching coach.
Narron, 49, becomes the 58th manager in Reds history and the 48th since 1900. He had been on the Reds’ Major League coaching staff since December 2003 as Miley's bench coach.
During the 2001 and 2002 seasons, Narron managed in the Major Leagues for the Texas Rangers. He also managed 4 seasons in the minor leagues for affiliates of the Baltimore Orioles.
Narron spent the 2003 season as bench coach under Boston Red Sox manager Grady Little and was a coach for the Rangers from 1995-2001. While he coached at Texas, the Rangers won the American League West Division 3 times (1996, '98, '99).
Ruhle was hired by the Reds in 2004 as the pitching coach at Rookie League Billings and this season was the organization's minor league pitching coordinator. He has 7 years of experience as a Major League pitching coach with the Houston Astros (1997-2000), Philadelphia Phillies (2001-2002) and New York Mets (2003). He will wear uniform number 58.
Miley was named Reds manager on July 28, 2003 and compiled a 125-164 (.433) record during parts of 3 seasons.
Gullett had been the club's pitching coach since May 24, 1993.

I can't be happy, I am having a bad day. I am a Flyer fan and found out one of our guards is bolting for Illinois and leaves the team short in the backcourt.

From ESPN's Website:

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds have fired manager Dave Miley, replacing him on an interim basis with Jerry Narron.

The Reds, at 27-43 this season, are mired in last place in the NL Central at 18.7 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals. The club has struggled mightly on the road this season, going 6-24 away from Great American Ballpark.

Miley, who has managed Cincinnati since 2003, compiled a 125-164 record and was named Baseball America's Manager of the Year in 2004.

The Reds are in the midst of a three-game series at home against the Cardinals, dropping the first game Monday night 6-1. The second game in the set is Tuesday night.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I would guess, at least with the pitchers, Ruhle will want to have some time to evaluate the talent (ok, that is debatable) he was given....

I hate to be happy when someone loses their job, but Miley has lost control of the club and gullett just wasnt getting any production out of the staff he was given, except for harang.....

He won't be though. Partly because Miley and Gullett were not really his hires and by replacing them with his guys he will have gained a little more time on the job. I also expect you will see enough improvement in both Milton and Ortiz to justify Gulletts firing. Quite a few pitchers have come to Cincy in the last few years and performed below career norms and a few more have left only to improve when they went elsewhere.

Scott Elarton was on his way toward being an impact starter before he blew out his arm. Ditto Carlos Hernandez, who messed up his shoulder sliding into second base.

Some major changes like a new GM can't be done until the off season. I think that they will hire a ''name'' manager like Lou to keep the fans interested and happy.

I think when Ruhle left HOU was the year during the move into the new stadium for them. ERA went way up.....Lima went nuts trying to keep his ERA under 6.00. They have adjusted pretty good to that park haven't they?

Here are Dibble's picks for manager.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/3707454

Here's an excerpt.

Here are my top candidates for the manager's job.

Ken Griffey Sr. is a proven winner who knows the game in and out. He was like a father figure to not just me, but to many others who played with him or against him. He would get instant respect in the clubhouse. Besides, who would keep Ken Griffey Jr. in line better than Ken Griffey Sr.? The elder Griffey could also bring back Reds traditions.

Barry Larkin. He has over 20 years in the organization, 19 of them in the show. He's bilingual, and as fundamentally sound player as you will ever find. A tough as nails competitor, no one can whip these guys into shape like Mr. Larkin. Plus it worked in Chicago with Ozzie Guillen and the White Sox, so why not here?

Lou Pinella. The last one to win a championship there, Pinella takes no prisoners, wants out of Tampa, and the owner there isn't going to let him coach in NY anyway. I love Lou, because he was the only person I know that hated losing more then me. Would be a great choice.

Larry Bowa. Larry got a raw deal in Philly, because those candya---- couldn't take his hard nose approach. He's a winner, he knows the fundamentals as well as anyone...That swing and miss crap wouldn't fly with him and he could bring some life back to a team that looks like they just lost their dog.

Kevin Kennedy. My partner on XM radio was the last manager to lead the Boston Red Sox to a division crown. I've learned more about the game in four months working with Kevin than from anyone I've ever met. He spent many years in the minor leagues as a player, manager and head of scouting, so he could rebuild the entire organization from the ground up. I doubt he would do it, because he loves working with me too much. Just kidding ...

I think the political structure was way off to succeed?

Lindener likes OB
Allen likes Miley
Allen is the villan according to the players.

I look for this team to put a real effort in on the field now and if Naron has even nominal success with this team look for him to be named THE MAN, OB to be safe and Allen to HIT THE BRICKS.

IT IS WRITTEN (I love saying that...big ego...okay...just funny)

He would get instant respect in the clubhouse. Besides, who would keep Ken Griffey Jr. in line better than Ken Griffey Sr.? The elder Griffey could also bring back Reds traditions.

Yeah. Ok. Great. So tell me, Dibs...can he actually MANAGE?

Barry Larkin. He has over 20 years in the organization, 19 of them in the show. He's bilingual, and as fundamentally sound player as you will ever find. A tough as nails competitor, no one can whip these guys into shape like Mr. Larkin. Plus it worked in Chicago with Ozzie Guillen and the White Sox, so why not here?

Still not seeing anything about managerial skills...

Moving on...

Lou Pinella. The last one to win a championship there, Pinella takes no prisoners, wants out of Tampa, and the owner there isn't going to let him coach in NY anyway. I love Lou, because he was the only person I know that hated losing more then me. Would be a great choice.

Ok. Lou can manage.

Larry Bowa. Larry got a raw deal in Philly, because those candya---- couldn't take his hard nose approach. He's a winner, he knows the fundamentals as well as anyone...That swing and miss crap wouldn't fly with him and he could bring some life back to a team that looks like they just lost their dog.

Got a "raw deal" by alienating his entire roster. Swing and miss crap wouldn't fly with Bowa? I hear Jim Thome and Pat Burrell snickering in the background. Dibs often goes into outer space mode in an effort to "shock" people. I'll assume the Bowa reference is one of those times.

Dibs, rebuilding an organization from the ground up doesn't happen from the bench during games. That being said, we know one thing about Kevin Kennedy- he's used to managing ballclubs with bad pitching. So he'd fit right in here.

How bout 1/13 with runners in scoring position on saturday for example?

How bout sunday Rich aurilla leading off the inning with a triple and we don't score a run that inning...

Those are the little things we need to do. Put the ball in the outfield or atleast into play.

That's just flat out awful baseball.

Pitching is obviously our major problem but to say it's our only problem is flatout ignorant. This whole team is a mess.

The way I see it, O'Brien is now out of excuses. He has his guys on the field taking his direction. If the Reds don't make an amazing turn around, he may get half of next season to prove he belongs as a GM. Then we will see...

Miley made a lot of on field decisions that left the majority here scratching their head. Gullet has not proven to be the great pitching instructor he is reputed as. The facts just didn't support either staying here.

I wonder if we can get a 'fly on the wall' in the clubhouse tonight...

What is Narron's opening line?

NO ONE on this team is playing well enough to not need some extra practice.

So, do the Reds win tonight or is Dunn still in the six hole?

Thats who I want the Reds to go after, in that order. Saying that, expect Narron to be hired on a full-time basis sometime in September.

I expect it as soon as we have a 3 game winning streak.

On baseball tonight they were talking about Dunn hitting in the 6 hole... and were talking about payroll. Comment along the line of the 6 hitter commanding 8+ mill after Arb... Kruck said something about should Dunn be in the 6 hole. and Gammons and Reynolds both said something along the lines of that's a complete other discussion we won't get into.

The only hope is that none of the pitchers show up for BP and the Reds have to forfeit?

It does have effect on the players in terms of their respect for the coach and belief that they have a chance to win. It would also signal that changes will be afoot immediately and for the better. However, yes, pitching is the vast majority of the problem, though run production could be more consistant. Hopefully Rhule will make a difference, though I don't expect enough of a difference can be made by a pitching coach with this staff.

Hate to see people get fired but it was overdue. Unfortunately there needs to be many more as this organization needs to clean house and re-build. They need to an entire new strategy, not just a refinement. Plus they need to learn how to win again.

A new GM will be much more important. Pat Gillick has a good track record and is available. I like Hunsicker for the job.

If Freel is playing

Freel
Pena
Jr
Dunn
Felipe
Casey
Randa
LaRue
(P)

If Freel sits
Lopez
Dunn
Pena
Jr
Randa
Casey
Aurillia
LaRue

Pena needs to see more fastballs. He has to be moved up, I think Jr. could be switched for Dunn in the three hole so he can see more fastballs as well, but I think with Randa behind Dunn/JR. in the four hole, that is still a little bit more protection. The majority of our offense should come from the top, that's why we can't continually put RA in the two hole, that is flat rediculous.

As for Gully gone...that was overdue, best of luck to the guy, but when you agree to letting both Eric Milton and Ortiz be summoned here, you were pretty much toast. The pitching coach should watch tape and see oh okay, we really can do this, or we can't. You have to know what you are getting before you get it, and I feel that is what led to him being axed.

Van Ruhle huh? Okay, well, it's a change. Hope for the best from this staff. Is this Van Ruhle guy going to be long term, short term? Who are some good pitching coaches out there, without a team, that could possibly end up being this teams pitching coach in the future, if he is shortterm.

This move was a long time coming though. Th eonly reason we didnt fire him after the Braves series was because he won the final game. So we waited untill he lost.

Great to hear that Miley and Gullett are gone. Probably won't make much of a difference now, but at least things are moving in the right direction. I've seen Narron's first lineup for tonight's game against the Cards, and I don't like it.

Dunn 6th? :thumbdown

I'll give him two games. He's got to show that it's his team and that Miley was part of the problem. If not, than everyone knows that this move meant absolutely nothing. Even if he was the one behind Miley's lineups this still holds true. This is one case in which change for the sake of change can work and must happen even if you don't believe in the change, which I hope to goodness he does.

I think Dunn and Casey should be flipped...I don't mind Aurilla in the 2 spot...since he got back from the DL he has been hitting lights out and made some really solid defensive plays.

This is just my opinion but if I have to watch the Reds lose, I'd prefer to see some younger players in the process. Nothing against RA personally but I'd rather see Bergolla get some starts at 2B with Freel hurt. Unless they are showcasing RA for a potential trade...

True. I'd like to see Dunn in the 3 or 4 slot and I'd really like to see Casey in the 6 slot.

Not that I agree or disagree with the firing of Miley and Gullet, however, I am sad to see anyone lose there job. IMHO no one should be HAPPY about such things as this, as it only means the Reds have been a poor team. You can support the decsison, or not support it, that is anyones right and I agree he may have needed to be fired, but I am NEVER HAPPY to see anyone lose their JOB.

I hear what you are saying, but I can't say that I feel the same way. It's bad that someone has to lose their job, but they would not have lost it, if they were doing it.

I will be very happy when Dan O'brien is given his walking papers. I think that going to the root of the problems is the best way.
