Hmm, strangely enough OB's prized FA's seem to consistently be put in spots with protection and where they have the most chance to succeed.

I can't imagine why that is?

ROmano has great speed, is a pretty good defender, and plays multiple postions (including MI). He has pretty good hitting numbers in the minors and has some power. He does not seem to be able to take a walk, which has prevented him from advancing further.

All in all he's not he worst 25th man in the league. But he needs to used that way.

If Pena did that for a full season I'd be concerned. All players slump. His .900 OPS suggests that he'll come around.

He's not the first batter who has slumped comomg off the DL.

For the record, even "studs" like Reggie Sanders can be a little off at times. His OBA was .273 in April, and .326 in May. If it wasn't for a hot June. even Sanders would be struggling to get an OBA over .300 (over 2 months yet).

Actually no.

The harder a ground ball is hit, the more likely it will not be fielded. Now, if it's hit right at someome, yes, it's easier to turn. But, you're better off in the long run hitting hard hit grounders then softly hit grounders.

Almost all of Casey's DPs are on softly hit grounders to second. When he hits it hard, it usually finds a hole.

Well, either that or learned helplessness would have set in. You can only use negative reinforcement so many times before the subject simply gives up trying to avoid it and sits in a corner whimpering.
