I sincerely hope Dan O is given his pink slip sometime during the All-Star break. And he can take Narron with 'em.
Noticed that Casey's getting the game off. Guess all a player has to do is threaten to file a grievance if he doesn't wanna "work" these days. Unreal.

Here's the important thing to keep focused on. If the Reds drop this game and tomorrow's (I'm thinking the chances of losing that one are excellent with Clemens on the mound), they'll reach the midpoint of the season on track for a franchise-record 102 losses. Infamy is within their grasp.

Dunn Homers. (2 run homerun).

4-3 Astros.

Bat him higher (like Narron's doing in this game), put Wily Mo directly behind him and you'd see a lot more overall and multi-run shots coming off of his bat.

Adam Dunn this season has been as poorly deployed as any player in baseball history.

???

The Reds stand to finish today only 3.5 games out of the worst record in baseball, and the only reason it's not theirs is because they swept the Devil Rays and not the other way around. As it is, they look to be a mortal lock for one of the four worst records in baseball ... and that'll fetch you a real good college pitcher in the 2006 draft, perhaps one of the UNC boys.

They definitely made the list M2.....but they are still in like 4th place....a few teams to climb under there. It is hard to make up 3.5 games you are pitting yourself against the likes of the D-Rays, KC and Colorado.

Thanks M2.....I agree with you that the Reds can probably do it.....but they still have to beat out 3 other teams.

The Reds have played a few more games at home than away haven't they? When they go on road more, they can REALLY tank.

I am not being sarcastic here.....I just think that if they can draft a college stud who can be their ace in two years.....and Harang and Claussen continue to develop....with Lopez and EdwinE and Dunn and Kearns and WMP, they could suddenly have a decent team.....that is if they dump Allen and DOB before they screw it up.

After this series with Houston, the Red's play 10 more games on the road than at home.
Watch for falling rocks.

Adam Dunn looks good at first. I think he's better than Casey. That was a good stretch and scoop. (even though it was hit)

No way. Casey isn't exactly Keith Hernandez, but he's come a long way in the last few years.

Dunn looks good every now and then, but he has miles to go before he's even average at first base.

But he could be, with reps.

Amazing that Biggio and Palmeiro swung so early in the count, then again there's a reason why the Astros are such a bad offensive club.

BTW, a good CF catches Ausmus' double and Ortiz is out the 7th without incident. Combined with Bruntlett's snag to end last inning, you're seeing defense making a close game out of what could be a laugher.

I've always maintained his defensive skills are obvious and glaring when you see him in action. Ensberg barely made it halfway to first on that play.

I'll take the growing pains errors in return for the mad skills. Great defense ended the Reds' 6th. Poor defense started the Astros' 7th and, thanks to Eddie, some great defense prevented the Astros' 7th from doing more damage.

If the site I looked at is right he is making $415,000 this year.
Id consider a 4 or 5 year deal between $15 million and $20 million.

If the Reds let him know hes going to be the full time shortstop then I think it wont be hard to sign him... All I know is if he continues this, the Reds better sign him to a long term contract because he is showing good signs of being of the future shortstop for the Reds.

I just hope they dont do what they did with Dunn. If they are going to sign him, sign him this offseason and not those crappy 1 year deals either.

Game segue - Stop telling me you're old school and BE old school

Go back in time 1980s and think about what the manager would have done once Encarnacion got that one out single in the 8th. In fact, let's pick the managers of the Reds and Astros for the mid-to-late '80s for this little exercise - Pete Rose and Hal Lanier.

Let's see, young kid been struggling a bit at the plate, gets on first with a one-run lead in the bottom of the 8th. Kids' got good wheels and the guy on the mound is an easy read with NO move to boot. Oh yeah, veteran hitter at the plate too.

Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that the kid would have been off the races in the first three pitches? Old school, the school where these modern managers claim to have matriculated, would have that kid playing some baseball. In fact the first base coach probably would have greeted him with "Time to cut it loose kid and show 'em you got game." When a manager like Rose or Lanier thought they had an advantage, they pressed it.

Yet instead of letting Encarnacion make something happen faux old school managers like Narron make him sit around and wait for something to happen ... and there's the rub. It's fine if these managers want to throw rocks at Billy Beane, but they're hardly making a case for an alternative form of baseball. Somewhere Jerry Narron, real old school baseball men like Whitey Ford are throwing rocks at you.

They say speed never slumps, that is unless you throw a cage around it. What galls me about these modern wannabe seamhead managers is they're getting in between their players and the game. They aren't aggressive and they don't look to take advantage at the micro level. It's too bad because I remember back when a kid named Eric Davis got off to a rocky start in 1986 and after swiping a few bases and making some highlight plays his bat came around (of course his manager also thought enough of him to hit him at the top of a veteran lineup).

Hey Jerry, stop sharing the constipation.
