Good to see Olmedo batting 2nd over Dunn. I guess Dunn's .538 OBP in the two spot isn't needed. Plus Dunn makes Lopez that much better when hitting 2nd.

Dunn-batting 6th

.179/.292/.339

It almost seems like they want him to fail.

Olmedo should never get more at bats in a game then Casey, Griffey, Randa Dunn, Valentin or Cruz.

Did I just say Cruz?? What the heck? Maybe Olmedo should get more at bats in a game than Cruz, I make no judgments on that

I'm with you. If anyone needs frequent rest its Griffey, not 23 year old WMP.

But these same people decide to bat Casey 3rd and Dunn 6th every night so maybe its a good thing we don't think like them.

I'm impressed with how he's pitched lately, but this is an Achilles Heel of his. He's averaging around 17 pitches per inning this year. Until he gets that down a bit, he's not going to get deep into games.

Brandon Claussen- Pitches by Hitter:

1st Inning:

Counsell (LH)- 3 Pitches
Clayton (RH)- 8 Pitches
Gonzalez (LH)- 6 Pitches
Glaus (RH)- 8 Pitches

2nd Inning-

Tony Clark (SH= RH)- 3 Pitches
Shawn Green (LH)- 5 Pitches
Terrero (RH)- 5 Pitches
Snyder (RH)- 5 Pitches
Webb (RH)- 1 Pitch (Sac Bunt)
Counsell (LH)- 5 Pitches

3rd Inning:

Clayton (RH)- 6 Pitches
Gonzalez (LH)- 3 Pitches
Glaus (RH)- 6 Pitches

Average Pitches to LH Hitters (non-Pitcher): 4.40
Average Pitches to RH Hitters (non-Pitcher): 5.86

Claussen's seasonal OPS Against splits are nearly the same versus LH and RH hitters. But I wonder if his high pitch counts might not be at least partly attributable to needing more pitches to get RH hitters out. The numbers above are obviously a very very small sample size, but I'm just thinking out loud.

If you want hyperbole, Grande said last Inning that Todd Coffey's first half has been a real positive for the Reds in 2005.

Now, I sure hope Coffey can give us something to look forward to in 2006, but so far:

.371 BA/.421 OBP/.569 SLG- .986 OPS Against

Eric Milton's OPS Against is .949. Of all NL pitchers who've thrown a baseball in anger this season, Coffey ranks 234th. But I guess when you've seen Paul Wilson (1.007) Rickey Stone (1.027), Danny Graves (1.027), Luke Hudson (1.060), and Joe Valentine (1.077) throw, .986 probably looks pretty good.

Yikes.

A few observations from what was a great game:

Dunn's opposite field HR was a thing of beauty. He has tremendous line drive power to left-center, and in my opinion if he learns to use it consistently he can become outrageously good. He does need to be encouraged to grow as a hitter -- and that's the area I'd like to see growth in.

Olmedo is a major league player. 2B, utility, whatever.

Claussen is legit, and I think he's going to get better. Fastball appears deceptive and uses it to both sides of the plate, good breaking pitch and pretty solid changeup.

I liked that Narron removed Claussen for Coffey when he did. In general, I think he's been much better than Miley in making pitching changes -- works the matchups better.

The back-door breaking ball Belisle struck out Clark on was as nasty a curve ball as I've seen in a while.

Super ballgame for the Reds!
