Coming into tonight Brandon Claussen had given up 2 HRs twice in 14 starts. The other 12 starts he gave up 1 HR (6X) or none (6X). The REDS lost both times and Claussen took the loss each time when he gave up multiple HRs...

(1) Apr. 29 @ Brewers. REDS lose 4-3.
(2) June 16 vs. Braves. REDS lose 5-2.

Mark it down, Monday July 18, 2005 - Falls City making a bold prediction.

I'm going to have to disagree. Prior/Wood/Both will probably make another trip to the DL in Aug/Sept.

This team is TOO streaky. Derrick Lee can't hit .400 & 50/150 ... can he? How much did the devil buy his soul for?

Derrek Lee is uncontestably the NL MVP--Ramirez may be the most underrated offensive player in the game. Walker's great. Prior and Wood destroy any pitcher on the Cards staff and Williams was a genius pickup. Barrett is the NL's best offensive catcher.

I think that the Cards - barring any other major setbacks - could potentially sleepwalk to the NL Central title. This is a club who is the defending NL champions and is virtually the same team as last year. True, Rolen isn't 100% & Walker isn't up to par & now RSanders is DL'd, but this is still the team to catch and beat. What is more impressive, is the pitching is now in a groove, and it's not like they are tossing Woody Williams out their every 5th day. I agree to disagree with Falls City. St. Louis will make a return to the Fall Classic.

Tonight is a good example why I think Claussen wouldn't be a bad throw in on the right deal. Other teams, he may have gotten 6innings in with 3-4 ER's, but against the better offenses, he isn't very good most of the time. For example, if the Reds could get Sowers AND Miller for Randa from the Indians if we threw in Claussen, I would do it(of course the Indians would need to add another prospect).

The Reds aren't going to compete in 2006, unknown ownership questions and lameduck GM next year pretty much leave in doubt many things. Losing Claussen may hurt a bit next year, but stockpiling young talented arms in the minors should bear fruit in 2007-08.

Standridge was brought in because he has the ability to pitch long relief while Chris Booker is known as a 1 inning guy.

That was quite an at bat by Machado. I have always felt that OBrien shortchanged Olmedo with all his attention to Machado. Machado may have slightly more range, but Olmedo seems like a far better player.

I've been one of the few Aurilia supporters on Redszone. He has served a purpose. But he's now playing too much, he's getting worse. He's keeping a guy like Olmedo on the bench. Get him out of there.

George Grande going on and on about leadership but can't give a single example of how any of the players on the current Reds team have helped them win games.

Dunn gets called out on a Ball again. And so tonight goes...

The void left by Aaron Boone just can't be replaced.

Until it was filled by Barry.

Who's void just can't be replaced.

Until it was filled by Sean Casey and Jason LaRue, who's void just can't be replaced....

George was essentially saying the club needs to hold onto the scrappy old guys for leadership reasons.

The guys doing Cubs PBP tonight were saying the same thing. They mentioned that Narron loved doing the little things and thats why he had Aurillia hitting in the 2 spot. They were talking about this and mentioned Aurillia's ability to hit behind the runner on first (Lopez) and take advantage of the hole opened up with the first baseman covering the bag just as Rich was popping out to Perez at SS.

Aurilia's one talent is that he'll hit a HR every two weeks or so. He won't hit behind a runner consistently (unless we count pop-ups). He won't regularly produce anything but Outs. And this is the guy the Reds are giving the second most Plate Appearances to.

Oh joy.

I fall asleep for 3 hours and look what goes on. Prior going for the Cubs on Tuesday too. I hate the Cubs.

btw, Jeter just struck out looking with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs. Jeff Brantley said he was trying to hard. :help:

I tried getting the hit chart at Reds.com to load, it wouldn't. I wanted to see if that may indeed be the case and I had been somehow overlooking Aurilia's ability to hit behind the runner. If he has been, I haven't noticed.

Since he is one of DanO's favorites, we don't want to inflate his ERA now do we? The guy who could go more than one inning seems to have trouble doing that sometimes.Keepint that ERA at 2.70 proves Dan is right. Of course, he's given up 5 hits in his three plus innings and the opposition is batting .357 against him. I shudder to think what his ERA would be if they let him pitch more than an inning...

He's been suspended for 5 games.

BUMPED OUT - Louisville reliever Allan Simpson has been suspended for a minimum of five games for inappropriate conduct toward an umpire.

The right-hander, acquired from Colorado in April for Jose Acevedo, began serving the suspension Sunday. The term could last longer than five games, with the exact punishment still to be determined.

The incident occurred on the final play of the Bats' 9-8 loss at Charlotte on Saturday. With the bases loaded and the game tied at 8-8, Simpson threw a wild pitch that catcher Dane Sardinha tracked down and threw back to Simpson covering the plate. Charlotte's Roosevelt Brown slid in and was ruled safe by home plate umpire Brian Hale, providing the winning run.

Simpson confronted Hale to argue the call and made contact.

"I showed him that I tagged him," Simpson told the Louisville Courier-Journal. "And he backed up like I shoved the crap out of him. It was a bad call. I guess he had somewhere else better to be."
