Cruz' start looks like a rational attempt to 1) get Cruz some playing time before Kearns returns fully, and 2) keep Pena from striking out four times.

Can't fathom Casey continuing to hit 3rd though, unless somebody thinks it'd be really cool to see him get the all-time record for GIDP.

If Freel/Lopez continue to hit in front of him he will break that record by the end of the month.

I will always remember the game in San Diego when Dante Bichette hit into four double plays. Or was it five? That was like watching a car wreck in slow motion.

Don't expect Kearns to play tomorrow either. Narron said on Real Reds he would play Pena tommorow because he hits well against whoever the Cubbies are pitching. Of course Pena could play center and Griffey have the day of or Pena and/or Griffey could be with someone else.
I wonder since Pena is sitting tonight if a deal may be imminent involving him? Just a thought.

Austin said he had some worked through some stuff. Wasn't going to put as much pressure on himself, just "have fun". Rick Sweet said he knew that "AK" took it hard when he was sent down and he (Rick) didn't know what to expect from him (AK), but that Austin had been very positive and had done everything asked of him and more and had a great attitude (even if he did dog it for Chili and M2). He also mentioned that one night he (Sweet) was leaving the park at midnight and Austin was still out in the parking lot signing for "every kid who wanted an autograph".

Oh and he lost 10 lbs.

Top 8TH B:0 S:2 O:2
Todd Walker pops out to second baseman Ryan Freel.

That is not the point. Pena was right on that pitch. Instead of a laser shot, it was a flare. That may be the hint of a physical problem that has hounded him this year.

Even during his "hot" streak of early July, he wasn't hitting the ball with much authority.

Uh, yes it is the point. You're cooking up fantastical and remote causes like injuries and I'm employing Occam's Razor--he swung first pitch cold off the bench and got under it. The likely cause is timing.

Uh, yes it is the point. You're cooking up fantastical and remote causes like injuries and I'm employing Occam's Razor--he swung first pitch cold off the bench and got under it. The likely cause is timing.

Sorry, don't agree. Watching Pena play for 2 years now, when he isn't hitting shots, hot or slumping, something is wrong with him. When he slumps, he doesn't make contact nearly as much as when he is hot but he still hits the ball with authority. He simply doesn't have the power in his legs and it shows.

Kearns being recalled is a further hint that Pena is not physically well.

Oh and he lost 10 lbs.

yeah, i know that AK has gotten a rap for bad attitude, being over weight and having bad work habits, but if it was as bad as it's been made out to be, I'd think the Reds wouldn't be so retisent to deal him. I'd think they'd be trying to give him away (which D0 still may do).

He's probably got another 10-15 to go. And that doesn't even take into account his cardio/vascular fitness or his reactivity. Austin's only started on the road to getting to where he needs to be. It's not going to be easy or quick and he's going to experience some disappointment along the way.

And Dunn needs to lose weight and quit smoking. And Wily Mo needs to not suck in the outfield. And Junior, well, Junior's in perfect shape and see what that's gotten the guy the last five years.

Point being, sure, he could stand not to got to Taco Bell, but if he comes out and rips the cover off the ball, no one's going to piss and moan about the jiggle.

Nobody, but nobody works harder on a day to day basis to improve his game than WilyMo.

And, other than maybe Harang, nobody on the Reds has come further during the last 2 years.

My college roommate at Ohio University was a Cubs fan from the Chicago area. (Which was OK back then, because the Reds were in the NL West, and the Cubs were in the NL East. Obviously someone in the Commissioner's Office flunked geography.) He was the impetus behind me getting to go to Game 4 of the 1990 NLCS in Pittsburgh. He says to me at 4:00 that afternoon, "Wanna go to the game?" I said, "The game starts in four hours!" He said, "So?" I said, "We don't have tickets." He said, "No problem. We'll find them when we get there." So I said, "Let go!" I repaid him the following season by getting blue seats near the visiting dugout when the Cubs were in town. It was the first time he had seen the Cubs since leaving Illinois before coming to OU. (He lived in Athens year-round, because he had a part-time job related to his major.)

Anyway, he did a really great Harry Caray imitation, and he taught it to me. It's been a long time since I tried it, but seeing your post reminded me of it. Thanks!

Wily Mo's game gets better every year. Adam Dunn's crazy productive. Jr. works like a dog and produces whenever he plays. OTOH, Kearns has scuffled in the majors for two seasons.

Austin's got a lot of work to do to get his game back in shape. I don't care if he jiggles if he produces either, but he hasn't produced in a while and I'm doubtful a return to the kind of productivity we should expect is in the cards for this season. Maybe he'll put together a pretty September, though I'm not sure that would be a good thing. I'd prefer his heading into the offseason with a mania to prove himself rather than thinking he's already got his game back in order.

Eh, anyone who cares enough can just look those splits up on espn.com.

Fact is that I've always supported Wily Mo Pena. Never wanted to waive him. I've always felt that his monster tools indicated that he may be a unique case of someone who can go from raw to raging. His speed allows him to supplement his BA and his IsoP allows him to overcome some of his OBP deficiency. At minimum I've always felt that Pena- even if he never realized his tools-based potential- is a valuable resource that teams will overpay to get.

That being said, I've also been very very realistic about what Pena needs to work on. Right now, he's Mr. Swing at Everything. Tonight was a great example of that. Pitchers will continue to throw him multiple "sucker" pitches knowing that he'll get himself out with regularity. The one thing I wanted to see from Pena this year is more of a clue about what not to swing at. Unfortunately, he's actually regressed in this area without any advancement in his Isolated Power or Secondary Average numbers.

In short, he's stuck right now and spiraling fast. He's the kinda guy who can get hot and turn it around, but folks need to understand the indicators and, IMHO, should temper their enthusiasm a bit- at least until he demonstrates some ability (any) to improve his plate discipline because, right now, it's awful.

He's 23 and still might be able to do that, but with his skill set it's going to be dependent on scaring pitchers into helping him out. And they are trying. He just won't let them help.
