Today's matchup: Reds (44-58) at Padres (51-51) | Game 1 of 3

Series update: The Padres won two of three at Great American Ballpark in May. San Diego went 2-1 vs. the Reds last year at Petco Park.

Reds update: Only Colorado has a worse record this season than Cincinnati, but the Reds have won 11 of their last 17 and have not lost a series since the All-Star break (2-0-2). Cincinnati is 17-15 under manager Jerry Narron, who replaced Dave Miley on June 21. Led by Ken Griffey Jr. (23 HR, 68 RBI), Adam Dunn (28, 63) and All-Star shortstop Felipe Lopez (16, 55), the Reds have scored the most runs in the NL (5.02 per game). Their pitchers, however, have the league's highest ERA (5.55) and have allowed the most home runs (152). Reds are 13-33 on the road.

Today's matchup: Pedro Astacio will be making his third start for the Padres and 15th overall. He pitched well Saturday in Philadelphia, allowing only two runs in six innings in a 2-0 loss. The Reds' Luke Hudson will be making his ninth start of the year; he won his first but is 0-5 with a 9.10 ERA since. He made his first career start last year against the Padres and gave up five earned runs in 5113 innings of a 7-2 home loss.

Probable series starters

Padres to trade
Nevin to Rangers
for Chan Ho Park

5:04 p.m. July 29 (UNION-TRIBUNE)
The Padres finally found a taker for Phil Nevin, trading him to the Texas Rangers for pitcher Chan Ho Park Friday afternoon, pending expected approval from the commissioner's office.

Nevin, 34, vetoed a trade to Baltimore on Monday, but Texas is not on his eight-team no-trade list, and Park has agreed to waive his no-trade clause.

How about batting Casey leadoff? I know he is slow but he scares me when he come to the plate with a man on 1st, and he has a high average so maybe Lopez or Griffey could drive him in.

Your "eraser message" must have been heeded, since Sean has been in the 5 hole these past 3 games...maybe now you should send Jerry a spatula so he can flip Casey and Kearns?

Casey would be hitting 8th on my team.

Ummm, no...#8 hitters tend to get "pitched around" and Sean's too willing to swing at borderline pitches.

Batting ahead of the pitcher is a good place for a hitter with plate discipline and a high OBA...Kearns?

The way LaRue and Valentin have been hitting lately, it's a crime to keep them down in the 8 hole

If Hudson and Claussen can pitch decently (like their last starts), with Milton amd Ortiz piching better lately, and Harang being consistently OK, I would expect that with our hitting, we can go .500 the rest of the year.

He can use his speed better in CF but he still has problems judging the ball as it comes off the bat. I suppose he could pass muster in LF but I think Dunn is and will be a better LF than WMP is. CF is easier to play, there's less hooking/fading on the flares to worry about. (Not to mention those nasty corners to deal with...) Pena is still young and could be taught to be a decent OF'er, but he sure doesn't have "the instincts"

I honestly can't remember a player that whined so much about his role since we traded for Shawn Estes. Frankly, Estes was a train wreck and deserved his bullpen demotion because he wasn't even giving the reds a chance in games. It was like watching Milton basically. Now Aurilia wants to start over a guy that has the ability to make the difference in every game with his speed and ability to get on base. Hit the road Rich, your tears aren't welcome here.

Actually, seems to me that if Aurilia isn't content to sit on the bench, he should be traded.

Richie's just mad because he's not getting his way. He's been vocal about this all year. He signed with Cincinnati no doubt at a chance at the starting SS role. When it was basically given to him in ST, he thought his goal had been accomplished.
Now that the truth has come out and there are just plain out better players than him on the team, he can't set aside his ego and accept it. He's manipulated everyone in this organization (from our standpoint) the entire year (his short rehab stint, his complaining when Lopez came back from the DL, and now his complaining when an obviously more valuable player in Freel comes off the DL and reclaims his starting spot) all becaues of his belief that he's worth more than he is to this team.

While this is a common instance among professional athletes, Rich has been playing the "veteran" card all year long and complaining his way into the lineup and onto the field.

Wherever he ends up, he most likely won't be playing any more than he is now. I'll bet he'd still be much happier sitting on the pine for a "winning" ballclub.

Since Aurilla has come off the DL, he's been one of the most productive hitting seconbaseman in the NL. He currently leads the Reds with hitting with RISP.

Even with his slow start, he projects to a full season with .260-10-82, with a .749 OPS. Not that bad for a MI.

Which makes it all the more maddening that DanO couldn't put together a rotation that was something akin to serviceable.

He's wasted a primo offensive ballclub.

I also contend that it's all the more primo now, considering the lineup modifications, the emergence of Felipe Lopez, and the addition of a slasher and dasher like Encarnacion.

In fact, when you consider that they've got guys like Freel, Lopez, and Encarnacion playing nearly everyday, the notion that this is a lumbering, homer or bust offense is fast becoming a myth.

DanO should have tried more low bargain goods after the Clement rejection, but I think somebody wanted that money spent now(namely Carl Lindner and the Cincy fan base).
