The Reds need to win this game.

It would be absolutely in-excusable to get swept by a team like the Giants on your home field.

You could be looking at the 2006 opening day lineup. I don't think Aurillia is going away b/c he is too "versatile" and hopefully the won't let Larue go :thumbdown

I think we can already pack it in even if we win or not... This team isnt good enough to keep on winning... You look and we've won 8 of the last 10 or something, then you turn around and they've lost 4 in a row... To be a winning team you have to stay away from losing streaks and that is something The Reds consistently find a hard time doing...

The Donkey came up to bat again in the fourth inning. Holding the bat in his hand, he strode to the plate in his pigeon-toed, inimitable style. But, quickly, the drunken, overweight idol had two strikes on him.

[Dissolve back to the hospital room where the boy listens to the radio.]

Just observing EdE's game since he's been up, he is exciting, esp. to consider he is holding his own at such a young age. His bat is so quick, and he seems to have at least an average eye that will allow him to take a walk when its given to him. I also think he will be a reliable fielder capable of coming up with spectacular plays, perhaps at least Aaron Booneish.

If Ortiz ends the year w/ an ERA near 4.50, is he still viewed as a bad pickup by DanO?

Good question. I don't view the kid we gave up (Mosely) as a loss. He hasn't done squat and is struggling in AAA. I remember the Angels hyping him initially, but I doubt he ever becomes a good big league pitcher. So, IMO, we gave up nothing of substance to get Ortiz.

However, Ortiz was bad and hurt when we needed him the most (in the beginning of the season). A good August and September which bring his numbers close to average doesn't change the fact that he let us down big in the beginning of the year.

But if he gets his ERA down to 4.50 and finishes strong, it's got to make you consider bringing him back. We need bodies in the rotation and potential tradebait next year.

That 1972-73 team had bad bats at 3B (Menke)..... OF (Geronimo was not hitting yet--- Tolan was good in 1972 but out by playoffs in 1973)....
Andy Kosco was decent backup in 1973. Concepcion was injured and out of the '73 playoffs. That Mets pitching was tough on anyone though.

WOY...those 1972-73 Tigers were a good OLD team---- even Woody Fryman was excellent for them down the stretch in 1972.

They overused Joe Coleman though.

Heck yeah they were good.. I went to 15 or so games in 72, including the eastern division clinching game, everyone ran on the field... but I wasn't allowed.

As for Coleman, just another picther that Martin ruined, look at any team he and Fowler(pitching coach) had, most guys achieved career highs in IP... look at Mickey Lolich during that era and Mike Norris, Dick Bosman etc..

say he has 7 more starts or so this year. Say his stretches his innings per start out to 7 per. He'll need to give up 10 runs or less in those 49 innings (a 1.84 ERA) to reach a 4.5 ERA. Not gonna happen.
