It'd be interesting if someone could find his numbers in Sunday home games this season. Seems like he goes deep everytime.

If Adam Dunn has to sit against every lefty, then why doesn't Sean Casey(.789 OPS vs RHP) sit against righthanders?

I hope they don't bring back Narron. Bring in a guy that will play Dunn everyday.

redsfan30
08-21-2005, 12:44 PM
I think Dunn sitting is more a product of him struggling pretty bad and he hasn't had a day off in a while. With tomorrow being an off day, they probably just want to get him two days in a row. And with the way Wily Mo punishes lefties, why wouldn't this be a good day to get Dunn a rest and Wily Mo some at-bats?

Yep, the guy will get a blow now and then, his career numbers in August are below his norm and September has historically been unkind to him. Perhaps some rest will stretch him out further is the hope.

according to espn.com Adam dunn has appeared in 122 games this year.

The Reds have played 123. So even when he doesn't start he usually gets a PH appearance.

After doing a quick scan of his game log, it looks like he hasn't been in the starting lineup 6 times all year. That's not a lot.

He had the one decent AB - the BB.

To his credit, he did go back and talk to Chambliss after every AB.

I don't have a problem with him sitting today. Plus he went into the wall pretty hard the other day so might be a little dinged up.

Here's my thing with giving guys days off...I'm fine with it, everybody needs it.

I don't think you should do it AT HOME....at least give the fans, especially the fans of a non-contending ballclub, something to watch

That's 1/2 the games in a season.

Barring working matchups, possible fatigue, injuries and any other sort of life changing situations seems to be an impossible task.

Evidently you haven't. Why in the name of all that is decent would you have Juan Pierre on your fantasy team? And the follow-up question--why haven't you dropped him long before now?

Eh, got caught in a bad spot actually. Mike Cameron was my starting CF and couldn't play at the beginning of the season. Jeremy Reed was my backup and started off horribly. I dealt for Pierre after his slow start figuring that he'd self-correct and that I could deal him for more than what I gave up when Cameron got healthy. He hasn't, Reed hasn't developed, injuries to other OF meant that I had to use Cameron in RF, and Cameron can't really help me right now at any position.

My OF situation started out bad and it's now to the point that my starters are Jonny Gomes (good), Juan Pierre (bad), and Carl Everett (not as bad as Pierre). And unless Brad Hawpe suddenly starts playing CF when he comes off the DL, I'm pretty much screwed in CF.

Then throw in the fact that I'm in a 2-team sabermetric league with 30-man rosters and smart owners and I really can't do much of anything right now other than hope for a hot finish to the season from Pierre. If he stinks for another couple days, I'm benching him and starting Chip Ambres.

How I'm challenging for the title is beyond me.

The double by Clark was a ball that Wily Mo absolutely butchered.

For those who want Junior removed from centerfield, do you really want this man in center?

Junior is getting better and better in the outfield. I think some exaggerate how slow he is. Sure, he's not what he was 10 years ago, but who is? Wily Mo may be faster and may be able to get to a few balls that Junior doesn't, but what good is it for your centerfielder to get to a ball only to procede to botch the play?

Austin Kearns doesn't exactly have world-class speed so I'm not sure he would have much more range than Griffey. Dunn's certainly not going to play there.

Griffey is not the bad defensive player that alot of Redszoners make him out to be. I'd take him in center everyday of the week over Wily Mo on an everyday basis and twice on Sundays.

Marty questioned his work ethic and I agree. He simply gets no better and really hasn't improved much since he's been here. So, is he dedicated to getting better? Griffey is our best outfielder and a lot of the criticism comes from what a lot of fans think of the money he makes. And his injuries. Griffey is not what he was ten years ago, but I'm not either. He is, at 35, still good and delete him from the lineup and you would feel the difference.

Pena needs everyday playing time to improve and hes not going to get that here.
The Reds front office would rather have him rot on the bench then trade him and now both Kearns and Pena get screwed for playing time. Hopefully they will come to there senses and trade one of the outfielders, but we all know its probably not going to happen.

I think Marty was absolutely correct in questioning Wily Mo's work ethic. Since the day he came up to the big club in 2002 he has been an awful outfielder. Here we are three years later and he hasn't improved one iota. Outfield play is something you can improve with hard work and practice and it appears Wily Mo is not willing to put that work in.

When he was on the DL earlier in the year, many questioned his desire to play because of the fact he was out of action for alot longer than most thought he should be.

If and when Wily Mo decides to dedicate himself completely to making himself the best player he can possibly be....look out. But right now, he doesn't give any indication that he wants to do that.

I question Marty's work ethic.

It's flat out lazy for a professional announcer to play the "work ethic" card pretty much any time something goes wrong.

He's done it constantly. It's played out drivel spewn from a man who hasn't put much thought into anything he's said all season long. The worst part is that it's enabled by a Front Office that honestly positions "try harder" as a real solution to a problem that can only be solved by getting better pitchers.

Cedric
08-21-2005, 03:24 PM
I actually agree on this one about Marty. All the front office types and Barry Larkin said Wily Mo had the best work ethic on the team. Now because he struggles at an unnatural position he doesn't work hard? Bogus, and the sad thing is people already agree that's the problem without anything but wild speculation.

Redsfan30- No offense but you aren't correct. There are certain things that are natural and can't be taught. Automatically assuming it's work ethic is just wrong. I guess Albert Pujols didn't work hard when he was in the outfield? Because he was just as bad as Wily Mo.

Griffey is not a bad defensive outfielder but he does not have the speed to play center effectively anyore. And being 35 years old, that isn't likely to change.

WMP should be playing DH in the AL. That's how good an outfielder he is.

I'm not sure Kearns could play CF any better than KG, as such I think the Reds best option is to dump Casey, move Dunn to first, KG to LF, and either give Denofrio a chance in CF next year (although I'm really not sure how good he is out there either) or go outside the org to get someone who can really play CF.

I hear a lot on RZ about how KG is still a GG if CF. That's simply not true.

According to BP, the Reds have one of the 3 worst fielding teams of the last 30 years. They do not, however, have that many errors. What's left is poor range. KG in CF is a big part of that.

You and Marty are dramatically mistaken. Since Marty should be in a position to know how hard Wily Mo works at baseball, I would even say he is out of line and is close to slandering Wily Mo. Wily Mo has one of the most postive outlooks on the game that I have witnessed. He is a real throwback player, who will spend any amount of time necessary to improve his game. Which he has displayed. However, at the professional level, hard work does not always translate into success. Witness Adam Dunn's outfield play, for an immediate example.

How has Wily Mo improved in the outfield? And I don't care if it's not his natural position becuase it hasn't mattered where you put him, he flat out stinks in the outfield.

I imagine if Wily Mo was putting in consitant work with the coaching staff in the outfield, we would have heard about it by now.

Again, outfield play is something you can improve upon if you just work at it. Considering he hasn't gotten any better defensively since he came up in 2002, that leads me to believe he's not putting in enough work to get better.

I am taking umbrage with the "moral" nature of the criticism that Marty took. If you think about why mistakes are made (in baseball, or anywhere else) and you come up with "I/he/she just didn't try hard enough", you are usually taking the analytical easy way out and you are blaming someone's moral fibre. So it is a lazy analysis and it is offensive. So it bothers me.

To be fair to Marty (which is obviously something that a lot of folks have no intention of ever doing), he wasn't trashing Mo. He simply was musing about the fact that he hasn't improved and that he should have had the ball. He then questioned whether or not he had the desire to get better. There's nothing immoral about that. Examples are everywhere.

If Steve (my idol) Stewart had said the same thing, I doubt it would have erupted into this discussion so I wish I hadn't even mentioned it. Whether you like Marty or not, WMP is not a good defensive outfielder and probably will never be. Case closed. To say that he is good and is improving when he's not would be pandering to your favorite club. Marty and any good journalist would be in contempt if they did.

You just can't say that for certain. A big part of OF play is depth perception which is a function of a persons eyesight. Perhaps WMP doesn't have the depth perception to be a good OF and if he doesn't no amount of practice is going to change that.

He seems to get a good jump on balls. He gets there, but often can't finish the play. On grounders hit at him with runners on base, I've seen him on more than one occasion let that ball get right on by him and go to the wall.

I disagree. He doesn't take direct routes to the ball. He has the speed to make up for it lots of times but he does not judge the ball well off teh bat.

Dunn and Pena should be untouchable, but when you have the sustained lack of success the Reds have - no one should be untouchable. The Reds need a bona-fide ace and another solid starter, so starting pitching is a need. A big part of OF play is depth perception which is a function of a persons eyesight.

It's a hard thing to quantify. People have an innate "radar" that determines how well they can track a fly ball. It involves recognizing the trajectory of the ball (which also involves reading the ball off the bat -- is it solid contact or not?) and it is also dependent on how well the person can make adjustments while running for the ball (to fine tune his route to the ball). I don't think you can teach someone who is below average in these areas (as I think Wily Mo may be, compared to most big-league outfielders) to be above average. My guess is that instruction of a guy like Wily Mo will be on minimizing errors and on recognizing situations when he should take a risk and when he shouldn't. I don't know about the play in question in this game, but I think Brennaman takes every chance he can get to blast Wily Mo for defensive lapses. I think it's unfair to the kid.

Casey Homers!

13-6 Reds!

Like I said. I suspect you could use Casey's home run totals as a barometer and thermometer all in one. Any meteorologists on the board?

Instead of asking how hot it is outside, you can ask: did Casey homer?

Casey hits a Dunn.

Casey hasn't hit many Casey's since his power returned.

Man.. I'll tell you what... If it wasn't for offence this year, our average starting pitching would be something like 0-16. Out of curiosity, what place are the Reds in as Most Runs Scored this year??

WMP will be fine. Just pencil him into CF and watch him grow. His troubles in the OF primarily come when he's in RF. Because of the slice off the bat of right-handed hitters, it takes either experience of feel to properly judge the trajectory. Unfortunately, WMP has neither. Not to say he never will. Sosa was just one of many terrible young right-fielders and he matured into a tolerable fielder. In CF, WMP seems to have much more success judging the ball off the bat. Problem is, WMP is young and getting very little experience sitting the pine.

Who would you sit down?

Each of Griffey, Casey and Kearns is also red hot. Dunn is the only one who's cold, and you certainly don't sit him.

Look for Pena to get starts against LH pitchers, and when one of the other 4 needs a rest.

Veteran Utility Infielder in Need of Home

Submitted by: Dan O'Brien

Veteran Utility Infielder needs place to play. Hopeful of match with contending team. Player can adequately play 2B, SS (for short spurts), and can also stand at 3B. Has playoff experience and is good bat-on-ball kind of player. Cheap contract, but aging a bit so we're not looking to shoot the moon here. All offers considered.

ALL-STAR SHORTSTOP CAN HELP YOU WIN WORLD SERIES!!!

Submitted by: Rich Aurilia

Heady, veteran ALL-STAR and Playoff quality Shortstop looking for the right organization that knows I can help it win World Series this season. Big-time power and sure-handed slick fielder at multiple Infield positions (best at Shortstop). Great in clubhouse. Real baseball leadership skills! Let me show your young guys how to play the game!!! Lied to by current organization and lost starting job only because of fluke injury. My attitude is old-school, hard-nosed, and I want to be on a team that knows (as I do) that it's better off with ME on the field. Don't let this opportunity pass you by as I'm vastly underpaid right now, making it easy for your team to get a TON better while staying within your budget!!! OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME!!!
