Somehow I don't think many folks in Philly will be too sad to hear this news.

Falcons' Mathis Out for Season With Injury
By PAUL NEWBERRY, AP Sports Writer

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Atlanta Falcons cornerback Kevin Mathis is out for the season after tearing up his left knee in practice.

Mathis, a nine year-veteran, is 31 and faces a long rehabilitation, raising the possibility his career could be over.

He went down on a routine drill Wednesday, two days after he was ejected from the season opener against Philadelphia before the game even started.

During the first practice for Sunday's game at Seattle, Mathis was covering a receiver down the sideline, went up to knock away a pass and came down awkwardly. He was carried off on a cart, and an MRI showed severe damage.

The team said Thursday that Mathis tore both his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, and also damaged the posterior capsule.

Mathis was in his fourth season with the Falcons. He was a valued member of the secondary, making two interceptions and 67 tackles last season while starting 12 games in place of injury plagued Jason Webster.

The Falcons planned to use Mathis extensively in passing situations this season, but he never played a game. In Monday night's opener, he scuffled with Eagles star Jeremiah Trotter during pregame warmups. Trotter also was ejected.

Mathis was expected to be placed on injured reserve later Thursday, freeing the Falcons to sign another defensive back. They went into the season carrying five cornerbacks, including return specialist Allen Rossum and rookie Leigh Torrence.

Rossum went down toward the end of Wednesday's practice, apparently tweaking his hamstring. He was listed as questionable for Sunday.

The Falcons don't have any cornerbacks on their practice squad.
