The game threads over the past three days have been moribund. I submit the news of DanO's pending return has knocked the wind out of Redszone.

I'd agree with that M2, it's like we know there's not much hope for next year with him back.

Yes. It sure ruined my week.

It's hard to be interested when you know that they are not even going to attempt to improve things and correct what's wrong.

It's also real inspiring to see a lineup of Jacob Cruz at first, Rey Olmedo at second, Aurilia at third and no WMP or EdE on a Friday night.

The 3 runs in the first may just stand up.

These gamethreads were dead before the DanO announcement. It is the end of the season, the time for these types of threads are over.

On 9/20 we were still averaging well over 100 posts and close 1,500 page views per game thread. Sure things were slower than earlier in the season, but it was still an active thread day in and day out.

It wasn't until the DanO announcement two days ago that the game threads keeled over.

Don't remind me, I'm making tomorrow my last game of the season. Of course I've seen Milton pitch several times this year already and he's done well each time as I recall. I know one game was against the 'Stros early on and he pitched 7+ giving up only one run I think....could be wrong its been a while.

Actually, we've seen a number of posters throw their hands up and quit paying attention to game threads since the Dan O'Brien coming back debacle...I mean "announcement".

Game thread involvement normally drops at the end of a bad season, sure. But the game threads fell off a cliff after the O'Brien announcement. Getting rid of the putz was one of the primary things we could look forward to late this season- and into the offseason. Hopefully a new ownership group can be found and punt his incompetent behind to the curb, but the thought of his coming back certainly has an impact on the current interest level.

If those supposed fans thought he wasn't coming back after the pace of the sale, they were lost and I don't remember to many people after Augest thinking he was going to get canned. Most of the posts of the "Pre-DanO announcement" were by pbp, which IMO finally just stopped as the Reds played up and down. The number of posts other than that had already dropped. Trying to use a late September drop in posts during game threads is tied to DanO is nothing more than your hatred against DanO.

Oh, "supposed fans".

Didn't know that one had to be an apologist for an awful General Manager to be a "real" fan.

Most folks have been hoping beyond hope that O'Brien be canned for some time now. Remove much of that hope and you're going to find folks who are just pure fed up and disinterested due to the expectation that we'll see the same futility in the future we've seen from O'Brien in the past. Remove hope and you remove interest. Cause and effect. Happens with "real" fans too, unless those "real" fans have their heads stuck as deeply in the sand as you.

Classy.

You're still running on empty here. You see you can come up with a zillion reasons for why game thread interest might drop in September, but what we've got here is a specific drop on a specific date where we all bloody well know what happened with the team. I have the luxury of facts and figures to back me up. You asked for proof and you got it in numbers that couldn't be more crystal clear.

For some reason this doesn't jibe with whatever fantasy runs on a loop in your head so you've chosen to pretend like it's not there. It is. You're wrong. Deal with it.

There are about 10 teams who could easily afford Dunn. I think DanO's going to want to nab a starter by looking more clever than the next guy. Heilman's the kind of fool's gold that he'd fall for as starting material.

Weathers has been overused and he was due for a "return" to career norms type streak, he had been much to hot in Augest. You can cry about the rotation all you want, but even during the glory days of the 99-03 bullpen, what happened to the BP through the season, they wore out.

M2, was crying like a baby over gamethreads of a dead team that is just playing out the string because DanO plays caretaker for another year while the sale goes down. Dunn getting traded? Not a chance. DanO has little trade power. If anything, Lindner will give him another chance in the FA market to boost value and his reputation. You better hope for better than we got this year.

My expectation was that the reaction would only be temporary. Like I said way back on the first page, that announcement seemed to have kicked the wind out of Redszone. That's not a permanent condition. Unlike the guy I was jawing with, I don't think fans have abandoned the team. I think they were left a little dumbfounded is all.

Through three innings today this thread was comatose. Then we get a little feisty, the Reds score a pile of runs on some massive homers, lose thanks to some equally massive homers and, voila, you've got your normal game thread. Does this mark a return to normalcy, where a big, active board gets involved in the game threads? It might though it's too early to say if people have finished swallowing all of that horse pill.

My forgivings on the bad remark, but acting self-rightous can get you in trouble in M2, lessen Steel better learn as well when things happen that don't support your bias.

You've backed lame horses all year. You're the chief Dan O'Brien apologist on the board. You say inaccurate things like the following all the time:

Weathers has been overused...

David Weathers 1998-2005:

1998- 110.0 Innings Pitched
1999- 93.0 IP
2000- 76.1 IP
2001- 86.0 IP
2002- 77.1 IP
2003- 87.2 IP
2004- 82.1 IP
2005- 75.2 IP

David Weathers hasn't pitched so few Innings since 1997 (19 games). In fact, while healthy, 2005 represents the fewest Innings Pitched David Weathers has ever recorded as a reliever. If you want lessons on bias, you'll want to look at your own behavior of finding completely illogical things to say in order to attempt to wash away poor performance. And yes, extends to your incoherent backing of ridiculously bad Front Office machinations.

In short, you reside in an exceptionally brittle glass house, Aronchis. Don't think that your bias isn't absolute and blindingly evident. It's also led you down paths you can't see and caused you to argue points you can't support all season long. Knock off the stone throwing.

Kearns went 3-4 with 4 runs tonight.

Since Aug. 15 he is hitting .257/.377/.540, with 8 HR and 28 RBI in only 32 games (thats 40 HR and 140 RBI over a full season). His average is a little low, but the more important categories of OBP and SLG are good.

I'm still hanging on a few possible bright spots for 2006; one of them is the resurgence of Austin Kearns.

That's the RedsZone quote of the year TB. I'm damned sick of it too, but Allen's comment that DanO has done a good job means more Miltons and Webers and less pitching.

Wonder when cheap ever means good? Just asking.

One more thing. What ever possesed Narron to stay with Weathers? He had nothing. I'll nver understand the mindset of managers who throw a guy out there just because (many words can be put here..."he's our closer," or "he's be rock solid this year," or "he takes my laundry to the cleaners") and stays with him until it's too late. What gives.

If ever I rooted for Narron to get another contract, that ended tonight. sure, the game meant nothing to the Reds, but it was a dad gum ball game. You don't go out to lose especially after a comeback like that.

Shameful.

And Narron in my world is a dead man walking.

My fireproof suit is on so flame away.

Just inexcusable. I may not sleep tonight thinking about this. How in hades do you let a guy give up five runs to lose? We've seen it from nearly every manager we've had here in the last few years, but why? Why?

I'd have fired the SOB at the completion of the game. Yes, i'm George Steinberger only I'm worse.

And Tracy Jones can kiss me where the sun don't shine. His shameless politicking for Narron to get the permanent job is second only to his politicking for Miley to keep his job.

Please get a real closer this offseason - Weathers is too shaky

Thanks.
Regardless of what happened last night, the Reds need an elite closer about as much as they need another OFer. What good is a real closer going to do with the rest of the pitching staff the way it is? Save 20 games? Weathers could do that. Coffey, Belisle, Shackleford and Mercker could all do that. This is what they mean by saves being overrated. It's not fun to see a save blown like that but it happens from time to time. This season wasn't lost because Weathers has blown the last 3 of 4 save opportunities - or however many he's blown - it was lost when Wilson, Ortiz and Milton started serving up gopher balls on a regular basis. Graves sucked but he was a convenient scapegoat. All the baseball people said last off season how the Reds needed to fix the bullpen. About the only thing they did to fix it was bring in Weathers and Mercker. The rotation needed to be fixed more than the bullpen did. Same goes this offseason. If the Reds are serious about contending, they cannot stand pat. They can't rely on Wilson to come back. Even if Ortiz is re-signed they surely can't rely on him to be any good. Same with Milton. If they don't re-sign Ortiz, you can't rely on Josh Hancock or Matt Belisle. They will probably be better than Ortiz but at best they are going to go through some rough outings. I'd be satisfied if they said that they were just going to stand pat and try to develop the young guys rather than blow a big wad of money on another Milton or a closer who may save a few more games than our current bunch.

I'm not saying that these guys are always right but some of the posters on here (M2, Steel, WOY, Chili, etc.) have been pretty darn accurate in their evaluations of the front office transactions - drafts, trades, free agent pickups, etc - over the past few years. Rarely have they missed the mark by a lot with their evaluations. They are right a helluva lot more than they are wrong which is more than I can say for DanO and company.

NO, I agree with you. I'm in a pretty bad mood too. And it was worse last night. :( I do think it means something to the players, but you have to wonder what it meant to Narron for him to leave a guy with nothing in the game and watch him allow 5 runs.
