Redsfan30's Second Annual Countdown To Opening Day.

Well, another season has come and gone. Another losing season is in the books. It was a bad year pitching wise and a bad year in the wins-loses category. But there were some good points....Junior returned to form; Aaron Harang and Brandon Claussen emerged as solid pitchers that can hopefully help the team for years to come; Felipe Lopez finally seperated himself as the official "shortstop of the future; the organization has some very nice looking prospects in Travis Wood, Homer Bailey and others.

Most importantly, we were able to just enjoy the game of baseball. Sure, we'd all like to be able to support a winning team but the fact that so many can come together to root for a common cause is a wonderful thing. We may have different methods and/or ideas about how things should be done, but in the end we all want the same result.

So here we are, October 3rd....the first day after the baseball season. It is always a sad feeling no matter how bad the team was on the field. So many of us put so much into this team that we are left with somewhat of an empty feeling. But rest assured, the Reds will be back come February ready to try and put together a run at something great. And we'll be right back in thier corner rooting them on. They may not be a 100 win team come 2006, but by God we'll sure root for it. We'll argue about how bad the pitching is. We'll argue about the importance of batting average. We'll argue about Adam Dunn's strikeouts. But more importantly, we'll all be coming together as Reds fans to root on the team we all love so much. It will be here before we know it.

This offseason should prove to be very interesting. Will we have new ownership? Who will the fill out the coaching staff? What players will the Reds try and bring in, and possibly the most intriquing part of this winter will be what outfielder (if any) will be traded and what do the Reds get back?

I hope everyone has a safe offseason and enjoys the football and basketball seasons. Heck with the Bengals on everyone's mind it will make the winter go that much faster. For those that leave Redszone for the winter, stay safe, have a happy holiday season and we'll see you again come Spring Training.

This feels less like a New Years Eve countdown and more like a detonator countdown.

The motivation to tune in this seasons will be to check on the progress, or lack thereof, that Dunn, Kearns, Pena, Encarnacion, Claussen, Harang, Coffey, and Wagner are making.

This is ridiculous. I live and die by the Reds just like most of you. I CAN'T WAIT! I love watching baseaball, and especially the Reds. Plus, we have the most exciting offense in the NL. If we are gonna be bad, might as well score and hit HR's doing it. Even if the Reds have a 78 win season (my current prediction), I'm still going to love watching them.

I'll buy it. I'll watch every Reds game that I possibly can. It may be painful at times, but there have been losts of those since 1961 when I started following them in earnest, and the reward is seasons like 1961, 1975, 1976, and 1990. There were 14 seasons between the 61 and 75 NL Champs and 14 years between the 76 and 90 champs. It's about time. Maybe not this year, but who would have thought the 99 team would contend?

Well, here we are. The part of the countdown we've been waiting for since October. Just one more week to go. It's been a strange off season starting first with inactivity then all at once it seems like we were the talk of the baseball world (ok, not the world) with a new ownership group soon followed by a new General Manager.

This offseason did come with some player movement. The mainstay of this franchise for the past 7 or 8 years, Sean Casey was traded to his hometown of Pittsburgh. A potential budding super star in Wily Mo Pena was traded to Boston. Some of the less talented pitchers from the Dan O'Brien era were sent on thier way.

One of the main goals of this or any offseason was to improve the pitching staff. There are new bodies on the staff, but if you've been lurking around these parts for the last couple months, you'd know that there has been heated debate on whether these new bodies are actual upgrades. Dave Williams, the return on the Sean Casey trade and Bronson Arroyo, the return on the Wily Mo Pena trade are the newest additions to the starting rotation.

The most controversial addition to this year's team would be Tony Womack. Dan O'Brien traded away two prospects for what seems to be a player who's skills have diminished greatly. Was this indeed a bad move, or will Womack pleasently surprise? Only time will tell.

This is the time of year where some of those posters who left us this offseason start to migrate back to the board, so to those, welcome. This is a wonderful, wonderful time of year. The spring is almost upon us (even though technically it is here) and baseball is on the horizon. Nobody expect this years version of the Cincinnati Reds to be anything less than a below .500 team including 95% of the population here at Redszone. But that's a non issue right now. Coming together to celebrate the start of the season and a new year for our favorite team, the Reds is what this is all about. Just for one day, we can set aside all our differences. Just for one day we can ignore all the percieved short comings of this team. All the threads on "fire player X" or "player X strikesout too much" can wait. On this day, none of that stuff matters...that's what makes this such a great day. Nothing can damper a Reds' fan's spirit come the Opening Day of a new season.

On this day, we can just kick back and bask in the glow of a brand new baseball season.

On this day, we celebrate our love of all things Cincinnati Reds.

So alas, we start the final stretch of the countdown.

I can't wait for the weekend to get here. Opening Day is the best day of the year, in my opinion. Nothing is better than Opening Day. We may not have the best team in baseball this year, but by gosh I'm still pumped for the season to begin.

I can't wait to see Adam Dunn belt homeruns long into the night. Ken Griffey Jr.'s sweet stroke. Edwin Encarnacion's quick bat turning on an inside fastball. Felipe Lopez continuing to develop into one of the best shortstops in the game. Austin Kearns bouncing back into a great player.

My baseball schedule for the next week: Watch Baseball Tonight today at 3:00 PM.

Watch at least one baseball movie a day starting Wednesday, I'll probably start with The Natural.

Watch Baseball Tonight Sunday afternoon as they preview the Sunday Night game and Opening Day.

Watch the Indians at White Sox on Sunday Night.

Drive to Cincy on Monday to watch my Reds.

And then of course hopefully celebrate a Reds victory and then come home and watch the Yanks-A's on ESPN2 and then Baseball Tonight as they show highlights from Opening Day.
