'Talentless' and 'wooden' are the terms that come to mind for me.

The guy has made a career out of being a background actor in the ensemble cast of a couple of huge movie franchises. Go look at the reviews for the LOTR trilogy and you'll find only one cast member was universally panned for his performance. Look at the reviews Pirates of the Carribean and you'll see the same thing. Ditto for his 'performance' in Troy. Then, of course, there is his leading role in the critically panned box office failure Kingdom of Heaven.

If Orlando Bloom is the best the Bond folks can do, they might as well drag out George Lazenby's withered old carcass and prop him up in front of the cameras.

So they are now going to be running two Bond franchises at once?

Frankly, I'm having a hard time believing this.

I've always wanted to see Sean Connery play an old retired James Bond on film, or perhaps take over the role of M.

He has just proved his ladykilling credentials by seducing Sienna Miller from under the nose of his friend, Jude Law.

Now Daniel Craig is about to become the biggest seducer of all - Ian Fleming's James Bond.

The actor, who found fame as Geordie in the BBC series Our Friends in the North in 1996, got the job after an 18-month mission to replace Pierce Brosnan.

Scores of others, including Law himself, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell and Orlando Bloom, were considered but rejected.

In the end a shortlist of two emerged - Craig and newcomer Henry Cavill. The pair were auditioned again and tried on tuxedos to see how they would look in the quintessential Bond clothing.

Craig, 37, whose choice will be confirmed by producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson later this week, will be the sixth Bond, but the first blond.

He will star in the 21st Bond film, based on Ian Fleming's first book Casino Royale.

Craig has said he does not like the fact that the films are more about gadgets than feelings.

He added: 'It's a big machine and it makes a lot of money - so why would you change something that makes a lot of money?'

Okay, so I'm probably in a minority here, but I actually like this decision. Craig was good in Road to Perdition, and I like the fact that he is English. I am also very hopeful when he says that he wants the Bond films to get back to the story rather than on all of the gadgets. Remember when Bond actually used to spy and play double agent?

Johnny Footstool

He looks more like the Russian agents Sean Connery and Roger Moore used to kill.

BTW - I understand the role of James Bond was originally offered to Roger Moore, but he couldn't get out of his contract for "The Saint." If he could have, Connery wouldn't have been the "original" Bond.

RedsBaron
10-14-2005, 06:19 PM
I agree with Krono and Johnny; Daniel Craig looks more like Vladmir Putin or a Russian agent than he does James Bond. This is a horrible casting decision. I thought the producers of 007 films wanted a "younger" Bond. Even though Craig is 37, he looks older than Pierce Brosnan, who is 52.
Johnny, while Roger Moore was rumored to be on the short list to be the first movie James Bond (Barry Nelson had played Bond in a TV version of "Casino Royale" in 1954), I don't believe from all I've read that "The Saint" kept him from the role in "Dr. No." Although Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman considered several actors, I think Sean Connery was easily their choice.
I'm struck by what columnist Pat Lewis wrote in 1961 about the criteria used in screen tests for an actor to play Bond: "Competitors must be aged between 28 and 35; measure between 6ft. and 6ft. 1in. in height; weigh about 12st.; have blue eyes, dark hair, rugged features-particularly a determined chin--and an English accent."

Unfortunately, in the case of every actor who played Bond several times, his final films were overwhelmed by gadgets and stunts. That happened with Connery in "You Only Live Twice" (1967) and "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971); with Moore in "Moonraker" (1979), "Octo*****" (1983) and "From A View To A Kill" (1985)--I did think "For Your Eyes Only" (1981) was an exception to this rule; and with Brosnan in "Die Another Day" (2003). I thought the first half of "Die Another Day" was good, but about the time "Q" wheeled out the invisible car the film jumped the shark.

My eight year old son made a remark that I thought illustrated the problems Craig may have in being accepted as the new 007. He saw some of the articles online about Craig's selection as James Bond and immediately said to me: "You'd make a better James Bond."
Now that's the voice of an eight year old talking about his dad. Those few here who've met me would laugh at the idea of me as 007, but my eight year old son has never said that I would be a better Bond than Connery or Brosnan or anyone else who has carried a Walther PPK or ordered a martini shaken, not stirred.
James Bond is a fantasy, but part of that fantasy is that Bond is tougher, more suave, quicker witted, and ruggedly good looking that any male could expect to be. On my best day, and on their worst days, I could never measure up to Connery or Brosnan. Daniel Craig..........

I do know there is a current book by the writer the Fleming family hired to carry on Ian's works about the young 13 year old James Bond. They want to attract the Harry Potter crowd and make them Bond fans for life.

My thoughts on that photo:

The producers have heard all the bad publicity generated by Craig's selection, so they're desperately trying to toughen up his image by showing him rough-shaven holding a massive .44 magnum. They even elongated the barrel in the photo -- maybe as "compensation" for something smaller...

That's not a 44 mag, it's a semi-auto (you can see the grip serrations on the slide) with a silencer on it.

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/02/23/D8FUV7GG4.html

It took an old Bond to come to the rescue of the new Bond.

Roger Moore, who played Agent 007 in seven of the James Bond movies, said critics of the film franchise's new star, Daniel Craig, should give him a chance.

"He's a helluva good actor," said Moore, 78, noting that critics haven't even seen Craig in the role yet. "So why attack him?"

The fair-haired Craig, whose recent screen credits include "Munich" and "The Jacket," was tapped last October to play the secret-agent icon in "Casino Royale."

A group of Bond fans have launched a Web site (http://www.craignotbond.com ) to protest the hiring of Craig and boycott the upcoming movie.

Moore, whose Bond films include "A View to Kill," "Moonraker" and "Live and Let Die," suggested the group was merely trying to attract people to their Web site.

He also dismissed suggestions that Bond is obsolete in a post-Cold War, post-9/11 world.

"Bond is fantasy, there's no real substance to it," he said. "It's a figment of imagination. ... (It's) sort of crazy, you know, a spy who is recognized wherever he goes. Spies ain't like that."

Moore was in Toronto on Wednesday for a UNICEF event. He is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. children's agency.

He will be in Quebec City this weekend to take part in a charity film festival, "Vue sur Bond 007," organized by filmmaker Hilary Saltzman, daughter of Canadian-born Harry Saltzman.

The senior Saltzman, who died in 1994, was, along with Albert Broccoli, the co-producer of most of the early Bond films.

I saw "Casino Royale" yesterday. Daniel Craig was great. He certainly does not "look" like the tall, dark James Bonds who went before him, but he perhaps comes closer to the Bond depicted in Ian Fleming's books than anyone else. He was quite believable in the role of a "blunt instrument" who, while he may not enjoy killing in the line of duty, is good at his job.
The entire cast, especially Eva Green as Vesper and of course Judi Dench as "M", was very good in the film. There is no campiness in "Casino Royale", which is probably the most serious and realistic Bond film since "From Russia With Love."
The film really isn't all that much of a "re-boot" of the 007 films. Yes, we see Bond first gain his "00" status and we see him first acquire a 1964 Austin-Martin, but the movie could have been made as simply a continuance of the series without many changes. However, while I really liked Pierce Brosnan as Bond, I do question whether or not he could have been as effective as Craig in "Casino Royale" as the character was written.
The movie is very violent and not at all light-hearted.
I liked it.

I saw it last weekend, and I agree with everything that has been said.

I like that the movie wasn't afraid to breathe a little bit. The last bunch of Bond movies have really been more like generic action films with bits of James Bond inserted into them for good measure and to move the plot along from action scene to action scene. This just felt like a real 007 movie from back in the Connery era.

I really hope they keep going this direction, because they have the potential to make some really good movies with Craig.

Oh yeah -- and finally a new Bond song that doesn't suck!

BOND IS BACK!

Just got home from seeing the movie (yes, I am slow...). Fantastic. Very well done. As mentioned, more of Bond relying on his witts instead of a bunch of gizmos. I loved the blend of real emotions and classic Bond ego. Showed just enough human side to be endearing along with the icey cold killing. Very rich story combined with what you expect from the real bonds: good story, lots of his street smarts, beautiful women and beautiful sceenary.

The actions sceens were great. Classic bond. Relativley quick, decisive, fast paced...for a while the action sequences in previous movies became these 30 minute slug fests that left no room for a plot/story.

Nice mix of humor too. The two best lines are when he asks for the valet parking ticket when he wins the DB5 in the begining of the movie. The best line was when he was being tortured and says "the whole world will know you died scratching my....." well, you've seen the movie.

Very well done.

Are people ready for an emo Bond?

ANTOFAGASTA, Chile (AP) -- After getting the bad end of his own ax in a fight, a bloodied villain limps alone in a stark desert.

Mathieu Amalric stumbles to the red, rocky ground.

"CUT!" rings loudly from the set of the 22nd James Bond film.

Picking up an hour after "Casino Royale" left off, "Quantum of Solace" is the spy franchise's first direct sequel. Filming began in January and has taken the crew from Britain to Panama to this moonlike landscape in northern Chile, which is standing in for Bolivia.

It's a place that director Marc Forster said evokes Bond's "isolation and loneliness."

"He is an assassin, he is a secret agent, and that reflects a certain lifestyle, which is lonely," said Forster.

Indeed, the big news on the set is that one of the two Bond girls, Olga Kurylenko, doesn't get in even a single kiss with star Daniel Craig. ("Why would I be disappointed?" Kurylenko insisted. "I'm just doing my work.")

The question is: Do audiences want an emo Bond?

Craig says not to worry too much.

"We're not making a kitchen-sink drama here. We are making a Bond movie," he said. "What Marc wanted and the producers and what I wanted is to bring back a visual flair to the movie, so that every frame in every shot that we see is beautiful. And there may be things exploding, but they're good to look at."

Still, Forster, the youngest-ever Bond director at 39, was hired on by longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson because of his emotionally intense films like "Monster's Ball" and "The Kite Runner."

Despite the heightened realism of the last Bond film, not to mention its commercial success (over $500 million worldwide), the German-born Swiss director was wary of joining the bombastic franchise.

Forster negotiated with producers to ensure he had as much creative control as possible on the $200 million-plus production. Nevertheless, he's still squeezed into the "framework of Bond."

"But I like it because you feel like it can make you very creative," he said. "And a lot of interesting things come out of that. Because, if you look at filmmakers that worked under politically repressive regimes, (they) made sometimes really interesting movies."

Filming is about halfway done on "Quantum," which is the name of the organization Bond is going up against. Craig said the emotional tone is lighter than "Casino Royale," in which Bond's lover Vesper Lynd betrayed him and then died -- but only a smidgen so.

"It's kind of Bond's journey into, at first we think it's vengeance, but it goes somewhere else," Craig said. "They've killed the love of his life, this organization, and we don't know who this organization are, and he needs to find out who they are. And it's for personal reasons but also professional reasons." VideoWatch Craig offer more tidbits about "Solace" »

Craig said that aside from some communications equipment, "Quantum" puts little emphasis on gee-whiz electronics.

"The Aston Martin's there, and that's still the best gadget we have," he said.

During reporters' visit to the set, Forster was filming the climax. Offices and a lodge underneath one of the world's largest telescopes at Paranal Observatory acted as an eco-hotel, used by the villain. Back in London, it would be re-created -- in order to be blown up, Broccoli said.

Craig fired into the skylight above the offices, and Kurylenko's character Camille ran separately off the roof of the building, flipping into a balcony. Amalric, playing the villain Dominic Greene, roamed the set in post-Bond fight makeup, bloodied and bruised on his cheeks.

A French director and actor known internationally for his star turn in "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," Amalric was allowed no shortcuts to villaindom.

"No scars, no eye that bleeds, no metal jaw," he said. "I tried everything to have something to help me. I said to Marc: No nothing? A beard? 'No.' Can I shave my hair? 'No. Just your face.' "

Craig, muscles flexing under a dark polo shirt, said he was exercising more than he had on the "Casino Royale" set, to avoid injuries when doing his own stunts.

He laughingly steered conversation away from health concerns. "It's just not very Bond-like," he said. "Bond should be able to do ten press-ups, then smoke 60 cigarettes, and then drink a bottle of something and pop a pill, I think."

Kurylenko, a 28-year-old Ukranian-born model-actress with few films to her credit, said her character also has "a masculine spirit."

"When she meets Bond, it clashes," she said. "She's careful and she doesn't trust that easily. So basically with men, she either uses them, or if they're no use, and she sees that they can't serve her, then she throws them away."

There have been several noteworthy confrontations around on the Bond production so far. In Panama, riots near the set forced a shift in schedule. And in Chile, a local mayor interrupted production claiming producers didn't get his permission.

National media has reported on Chileans' disappointment in not seeing more of Craig during his stay in their country. And in a separate controversy, Chile-as-Bolivia has not been a popular choice, either: Hurt feelings remain between the South American neighbors over an 1879-84 war in which Chile took Bolivia's Pacific coastline. The two have not had diplomatic relations since 1978.

"We knew there was a war 100 years ago, but we didn't know it was still an issue," Wilson said.

Next, the eternal question: What's next for Bond?

Wilson said he expected Bond production to pause for at least a year following "Quantum of Solace."

"I need a break for a little while," he said.

Forster said he won't be back for Bond 23.

"If I would ever do a big movie again in that size," he said, "it has to be my own franchise, which I would create from scratch, which I would cast, create the look and really create the franchise on my own."

And Craig, who turned 40 while filming in Panama, said he'd keep playing Bond -- so long as the quality remains high.

"I want them to stand alone and be good films," he said. "As long as that continues, then we'll keep making them. And if it doesn't, then we'll stop."

The more I hear about the next Bond film, the less interest I have in seeing it.

It sounds to me like they're starting to follow much more in the spirit of Ian Flemming's novels.

I can see where some wouldn't like that, but I'm of the mind that anything which moves Bond back towards good cinema (and away from such cartoonish messes like "Moonraker") is a positive thing. The character has been surviving as a caricature with loud explosions for too long. "Casino Royale" was a step away from that, and I loved it to death for that reason.

Just give her a new character to play and don't say anything about it.

That would work. She (Eva) could run around in that red/maroon dress she wore in the finale sceen. Perhaps it could be soaking wet the whole time too.

I didn't care much for the Bourne films, but that's probably because they just took the name of a character from the Ludlum books and made completely different stories from what the books were. It all started kind of the same with Bourne being fished out of the sea and not knowing who he was, but that's about where the similarities with the books ended.

Casino Royale seemed grittier to me and very much in the spirit of the original character as written by Flemming. I enjoyed it for that reason. The lack of gadgets made the film more real in a way.

Saw Quantum last night, and ironicallly Casino Royale was on tonight uncut.

Quantum didn't make all that much sense to me since I didn't see Casino until tonight, but after seeing Casino tonight Quantum didn't get all that much clearer.

From what I gathered, Quantum was sorta about Bond getting revenge, which he did at the VERY end of Quantum, but the story of the Bolivian chick killing the General, combined with Bond avenging Vesper's death (although her death seemed very much so martyr-ish to me) seemed extremely weak, and drawn out. Quantum seemed like Bond getting revenge on Dominic Greene b/c of Vesper, but from what I gather he had nothing to do with her death, and the guy at the very end of Quantum with the Canadian government chick was the only connection between the two movies, aside from Mathas (who seemed to betray Bond in Casino and then get what he had coming to him in Quantum)....

The amazing part is that apart from 2 horrible movies, Daniel Craig is a great Bond, and Judi Dench continues to be a great M....

He's has a lot of charisma, and draws the viewer into the story, even when there's not much story.

Part of me is hoping for another Daniel Craig Bond movie, although I'm not sure where they could go, since this was a precursor of Bond becoming a Double 0.

My reaction was that the story did seem a little muddled, but in the end it was entertaining. I like the direction they're going with Craig more than in the recent ones with Brosnan where everything was about the gadgets. I know that gadgets have always featured prominently in a lot of Bond films, but I just like the feel of these last two. They seem more real.

Saw it last week.
I prefer Bond to be a playboy even though it is my understanding that the recent incarnation is closer to the character originally developed in the books. But I say bully to the books- I don't go to a Bond movie to discuss literature, I go to watch a guy do impossible things with gadgets and explosives. I go to see bikinis and diabolical villains who have secret underground lairs.

As for Bond, if I want a brooding, bare knuckle fighter I'll wait for the next Bourne movie.

Color me disappointed, except for the scene when the hotel blows up. And all the fighting and shooting, of course.

My wife loved it because that new Bond guy is hella hot, or so I'm told. She'd watch that guy in a two hour informercial for beanie babies.

If I remember the articles right, this "Bond becomes Bond" arc is supposed to cover four movies. The Bond of the first two movies is still pretty raw; the style and mannerisms are supposed to emerge in the third and fourth films, at the end of which he will be the iconic Bond as we know him.

Just saw "Quantum of Solace" on video. I have to say, the new Bond style makes it just another fomula action film. For me the lack of Bond schtick makes this movie kind of run of the mill and isn't distinguished in any way from any of many other action films. I miss the Bond of old. I think I'll go out and Rent "Thunderball" this afternoon.

I believe the verdict is still out, but so far Daniel Craig is at the top of my list of James Bond actors. I really thought no one would ever top Sean Connery in my book, but I believe he has. Pierce Brosnan was very good as well and I was very disappointed when he didn't come back, but Daniel Craig has surpassed him. I want to see another with Craig and if it is as good as these two, he will top my list.

Speaking of James Bond actors, I just read today that Daniel Craig is filming "Cowboys and Aliens," co-starring Harrison Ford. Craig apparently plays a cowboy who leads people in an old west town in 1873 in a battle against aliens from space. The film is to be released next summer.
Finally MGM has tentatively stated that the next Bond movie, presumably starring Craig, will be released in November 2012, assuming that all goes as planned in its bankruptcy.

Daniel Craig has been covertly filming scenes at Buckingham Palace for a special video for the 2012 London Olympics at The Queen's invitation, London's The Sun reported.

The clip, which is directed by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle, will apparently end with Craig's Bond parachuting into London's Olympic Stadium, according to the report.

It will be screened as part of the July 27 opening ceremonies as part of a big year for England that includes the 50th anniversary of the Bond film franchise and the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

It was announced today that the next Bond movie will be call "Spectre." Although no character is officially named Blofeld, using the name of Spectre means that a Bond movie will finally see the return of Bond's most formidable adversary after more than 40 years. Because of legal issues, Spectre and Blofeld have not been in a 007 movie since 1971's "Diamonds Are Forever."

This morning, director Sam Mendes announced the official name for the 24th Bond film (Spectre), the official Bond car (Aston Martin DB10), and key cast members. Five newcomers (Andrew Scott, Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, and Monica Bellucci) will be joining the group established in 2012's Skyfall: Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear, and of course Daniel Craig himself as James Bond.

Spectre begins filming tomorrow and is set for release November 6th, 2015.

http://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2014/dec/04/in-spectre-gadgets-six-things-we-learned-from-the-james-bond-title-announcement

All 007 films feature two girls – one who Bond immediately has sex with and then dies, and one who Bond eventually has sex with and then probably dies about three seconds after the credits when Bond gets drunk and realises that he actually hates all women. This time, the girls are Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux. It goes without saying that Monica Bellucci will play the first girl, because what could possibly be more disgusting than the thought of James Bond having any sort of meaningful romantic liaison with an age-appropriate woman? Bleurgh.

Hey, Eva Green is the upper class of Bond Girls.

While I have no problem with Lea Seydoux, I don't really remember the Bond Girl from Skyfall too much.

That's because the "true" Bond girl of Skyfall was Judi Dench.

If Monica Bellucci is only the 51st most gorgeous woman on the planet, given that she's also intelligent and a good actress, she'll still probably do ok as a Bond girl, I'll venture.

Monica Bellucci is attractive. One thing about her gaining her role as a "Bond Girl" is that she is 3 1/2 years older than Daniel Craig. Most of the "Bond Girls" over the years have been significantly younger than the actor playing James Bond. Roger Moore had the female lead (Jane Seymour, Maud Adams, Carole Bouquet, Barbara Bach) in most of his 007 movies 15, 20+ years younger than he was than he was. Denise Richards was 20 years younger than Pierce Brosnan. Eva Green was more than a decade younger than Craig. Bond having a love interest around his own age is unusual in the film series-nothing wrong with that, just unusual.

I think she's a great choice and age appropriate as stated above. There are many very beautiful actresses in their 40s and 50s that can play these roles and add some extra experience and intelligence that often isn't in mind when producers cast a 21 year old model in a film.

I agree. I have just read that Bellucci, at age 50, will be the oldest "Bond Girl" ever, a distinction which Honor Blackman has held when she played her role in "Goldfinger."
Denise Richards was arguably the worst ever "Bond Girl." It wasn't that she was 20 years younger than Pierce Brosnan-it was that she was totally unbelievable as a nuclear physicist in "The World Is Not Enough."

Feels like brother or cousin if they keep the actors ages the same as the characters: Waltz is 58; Craig is 47. Maybe some lost German royalty involved. It's Bond, I'm excited! [emoji7]

Well we know his parents are dead. The paper he was holding was a guardianship form and the ski picture showed an adult male and a child. I am guessing it has something to do with the guardian.

I rewatched Skyfall the other night and they never explain the story of how Bond's parents died. I had on part of Sam Mendes' director commentary on the Blu Ray and during the scene in with Bond and M are in Glencoe she asks him a little about his childhood. His response to how his parent died was that M knows the story. Mendes said in the commentary that the scene was longer originally Bond said more but it didn't feel like the right time for him to do so so it was cut short. Later, Mendes spoke about how Fleming had written about Bonds parents being killed in a mountaineering accident. In the photo from the trailer it is a mountain scene. It could be the secret is simply more info about how they died and if James had a role in the accident.

Edit: from WikiBond
http://jamesbond.wikia.com/wiki/Monique_Delacroix_Bond

It was not until the penultimate novel, You Only Live Twice, that Ian Fleming gave Bond a sense of family background, using a fictional obituary, purportedly from The Times. The book was the first to be written after the release of Dr. No in cinemas and Sean Connery's depiction of Bond affected Fleming's interpretation of the character, to give Bond both a sense of humour and Scottish antecedents that were not present in the previous stories. The novel reveals Bond is the son of a Scottish father, Andrew Bond, of Glencoe, and a Swiss mother, Monique Delacroix, of the Canton de Vaud. [B]When his parents are killed in a tragic mountain climbing accident in the Aiguilles Rouges near Chamonix, eleven-year-old James is orphaned.

http://jamesbond.wikia.com/wiki/Andrew_Bond

The novel reveals Bond is the son of a Scottish father, Andrew Bond, of Glencoe, and a Swiss mother, Monique Delacroix, of the Canton de Vaud. The young James Bond spends much of his early life abroad, becoming multilingual in German and French because of his father's work as a Vickers armaments company representative.

You only live twice also referred to Bond's father having a sister, Charmain.

So this was basically a reboot of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, correct? Bad guy wanting his daughter protected from a worse bad guy, Bond falling in Love with the daughter, strange clinic in the mountains, etc.... Only it seems that Tracy/Madeleine is going to die at the beginning of the next movie instead of at the end of this one.

I guess I knew since the law suit was settled that Blofeld would obviously be in the movie but I guess I expected more of an original story. Even still I thought it was very good, a little long and I could have used more Christoph Waltz, but I guess they're setting him up for the next movie. I wasn't a big fan of Andrew Scott's character which I was surprised because I love him in Sherlock.

Don't know - its just a habit of mine especially if the accents are strong or the character mumbles.
