His last bout was with his protègèturned-rival Tommy Gunn in Rocky V.

Now, more than 15 years on - and 30 years since first putting on his boxing gloves - Rocky Balboa is making another comeback.

Hollywood sources confirmed last night that Sylvester Stallone has agreed to star in the sixth instalment of the Rocky saga.

Filming starts in Los Angeles in December and Stallone, who will turn 60 next year, is also lined up to direct.

A spokesman from the star's agent Paul Bloch said: 'There is a script, but it has yet to get the green light.'

This is industry-speak for Stallone being in advanced talks, but having yet to officially announce his commitment to the project.

In Rocky VI, a lonely, poverty-stricken Balboa comes out of retirement and looks to keep his hand in with a few low-profile fights.

But his return to the ring causes a media frenzy and a promoter comes up with the idea that he should fight the heavyweight champion, Mason 'The Line' Dixon.

Stallone is understood to have been back in the gym in preparation for the role.

Although the film is to be made in Los Angeles, it is unclear whether it will be set in Rocky's hometown of Philadelphia. The supporting cast has not been announced.

Rocky will signal something of a renaissance for 59-year- old Stallone, who will turn 60 during filming, and comes as he attempts to revive his other career-defining role, Rambo.

The fourth film in that series is currently in pre-production and will also be produced by Stallone.

The actor became one of Hollywood's highest-paid leading men as the monosyllabic Rocky.

For the first film, in 1976, he was paid just £15,000. But for each sequel he got a huge pay rise - and for Rocky V he earned £10million.

His last role was a cameo in last year's Spy Kids 3. Previously, he had failed to set the box office alight with D-Tox, Driven and the remake of Get Carter.

How can you have Rocky VI when there was no Rocky V??????

Yup, there was never a Rocky V, nope, just 4. Just like there was only Godfather I and II, never a third.

They should have Rocky fight another boxer who:

* Spent time in prison for rape.
* Has a strange tattoo covering the left-side of his face.
* Claims he will eat Rocky's kids.
* Bites a chunk of Rocky's ear-lobe off during a sparring exhibition to promote the ultimate fight.
* Used to be "one of the greatest ever" until his own ignorance helped ruin his career and himself.
* Is so ignorant that you wonder why people give him the attention that he receives.

NAH... that would never be believable in the real world, would it?

By DAVID S. COHEN

Sylvester Stallone is reaching back to his glory days, and companies are lining up to relive the memories.

As rumors still persist that the actor will resurrect the "Rambo" franchise, Columbia, Revolution StudiosRevolution Studios and MGM are teaming to co-produce and co-finance "Rocky Balboa," the sixth pic in the "Rocky" series.

Stallone will reprise his role as Philadelphia working-class hero and former champ Rocky Balboa. He will also write and direct.

"We'll try to capture the essence of the first couple of films," Stallone told Daily Variety.

Stallone wrote all the previous "Rocky" films and directed the second, third and fourth entries.

And "Rocky" has been around so long, some familiar names -- but of different generations -- are in the mix.

Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler and Kevin King are producing. Robert Chartoff and Irwin WinklerIrwin Winkler, who produced the previous "Rocky" pics, are aboard as exec producers.

Burt Young returns in the role of Paulie; Bill Conti, who wrote the original "Rocky" score, returns as well.

Pic will shoot starting in the first quarter of 2006 in Philadelphia and Las Vegas. No release date has been set yet.

Stallone said the story has the aging, widowed Rocky initially refusing a chance to get back in the ring.

"There's a computer fight between the reigning world champion and Balboa, and Balboa wins," he said.

"The champion's management says let's do this for real, for charity. Rocky says no but decides to be true to himself even though he's going to be berated by everyone. Just to compete, not to win."

Stallone said former heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. is in talks to play Rocky's opponent, Mason Dixon.

The rest of the cast will likely be unknowns, he said.

Stallone said the project has been gestating for four years.

"You had the studio difficulty, two studios in transition, then there was a reluctance to go forward until everyone felt there was a script that echoed the kind of sincerity and values the first one had, and had some poignancy like the first one had."

Stallone said Joe RothJoe Roth was instrumental in bringing the project together. He "worked very closely with Irwin Winkler and Bob Chartoff and was instrumental in just putting all the pieces together."

He added that Rocky's arc has been autobiographical for him over the years, and this is no exception.

"I am drawing on a lot of my feelings that are in synch with many people's feelings about facing the last chapter of their lives and how they want it to be written. Rocky goes through the skepticism of trying to go against the tide, to go against common sense."

Stallone said it was tough to be back in the writer's chair after several years away. "It's like going into the barn to start an old engine and see it smoke, rattle and belch, then eventually it starts humming."

He also said the business had changed quite a bit in the 30 years since the first "Rocky."

"In the '70s and '80s, you could change start dates and be flippant about commitment. You can't do that anymore. It's very, very precise; it's run as a strict business now. And I like it. There's no illusion anymore. It's not a dream factory now, it's a real factory. In a good way."

The "Rocky" franchise has grossed $495 million in the U.S. alone.

Stallone was last seen on the bigscreen in "Spy Kids 3-D." He was an exec producer on reality boxing skeinskein "The Contender."

He has apparently slated to revive the "Rambo" series with "Rambo IV" next year and plans to write and direct "Poe," starring Robert Downey Jr.Robert Downey Jr. as the author.

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/entertainment/5215954/detail.html

LOS ANGELES -- Sylvester Stallone is reprising his role as gun-totin' John Rambo in the upcoming "Rambo IV."

The 59-year-old actor is also coming back as Rocky. He will write and direct the film he's calling "Rocky Balboa," the sixth installment in the series.

The new Rambo will start when the new Rocky wraps.

A upcoming Rambo script hasn't been written yet, but the story calls for the reclusive Vietnam veteran to resume his vigilante ways when a young girl is kidnapped.

The first three films grossed a combined $614 million worldwide.

I once saw part of "Oscar", which was also pretty bad. Of Stallone movies other than the first three "Rocky"s that I thought were okay, I'd name "Tango and Cash," a stupid buddy/cop movie he made with Kurt Russell, and "Victory," a WWII/soccer flick he made with Michael Caine. Neither film is great, but they are not horrible.

As for good Stallone movies, Copland was pretty good and he was good in it. I think Stallone is a good actor when he wants to be and when there is a script that is good. Problem is he usually doesn't care about being good and most of the scripts are crap. I remember the promos for Rocky. They compared him to all the great Italian actors then. Made it seem like he was all of them rolled into one. He was great in Rocky but he was no De Niro, Pacino, etc.

I enjoy most of Stallone's movies, the worse they seem to be the better I seem to like them. Maybe it has something to do with Stallone himself starting out a serious underdog. Put 'em down in the guilty pleasure category.

I didn't see it, RB, but I heard it was a really great Bond. Better than anything Brosnan did? Where would you rank it amongst the other Bonds?

I really liked "Casino Royale," and Daniel Craig is a much, much better actor than Pierce Brosnan; Craig arguably is the best actor ever to play James Bond.
Ranking "Casino Royale" among the other Bond films is a tougher matter. Craig's Bond is a very different character than Brosnan's Bond, and "Casino Royale" is a very different film than "Goldeneye," which is my favorite Brosnan effort as 007. "Casino Royale," while still not in the end a realistic look at the world of spies, is a much darker and more serious film than any prior 007 movie, displacing "From Russia With Love" as the most serious of the Bond films.
While I liked "Casino Royale," what I do not yet know is how it will stand up to repeated viewings. If I can explain, "Ordinary People" and "Schindler's List" are two very good, very serious movies that I liked, but two movies that I have no desire to ever watch again. In contrast, I watch "Tombstone" every time it is on TV, and my partner and I were reciting entire lines of dialogue from that movie yesterday evening. "Tombstone" is not nearly as great a film as "Schindler's List" but it is a lot more fun movie to watch, and watch again.
I've watched "Goldeneye" and "Thunderball" numerous times, and I'll watch them many more times--they are just a fun diversion for me. I do not yet know if I will have the same reaction to "Casino Royale."

I just got back from viewing Rocky Balboa and I must say that the movie is definitely a must see. I am kind of biased due to the fact that I am a huge Rocky and Stallone fan but this movie did justice to the ending of the saga.
