Forgive me if this has been discussed here before but I don't remember it ever coming up. Would you be interested in the Reds pursuing the Nomar to play Short or second (with Felipe at the other) for next year? For Nomar it would seem to make sense for a one year deal to have new friendly confines to rebuild his rep before going at free agency again next fall. For the Reds, it would give them a probably affordable, veteran middle infielder who can hit and respectably field. Obviously not a pitcher but better than Machado.

I doubt he can stay healthy enough to hold down 2nd or SS.

Only for a minor league contract worth about $600,000.

not really ... he would be one and done and offense(with poor defense) is not what the Reds should be looking for.

Nomar is still generating interest from a lot of teams. For what he would cost on the open market, I don't think it would be smart of the Reds to show any interest.

Wouldn't come cheap enough for the impact he would likely have. He would bring some plublicity though.

I'll take Nomar at 2B for 500K with a 1MM bonus at 300 PA and 500K for each additional 100 PA. I'm guessing he gets 4MM guarenteed from somebody though.

So, you'd sign him to play 3rd?

I'd sign him to be the beer guy ;)

When was nomar ever bad in the field? he's probably lost some range but i'd still imagine he is an above average SS

Can he pitch?

I'm sure he'd be great in the field I just don't think he'd be out there for more then 80 games.

I bet Marty Brennaman would sign Nomar to play third.

I seriously doubt Garciaparra will get serious interest as a shortstop or second baseman. His range was never great in his prime and he ain't in no prime no more.

Apparently the Padres are looking to play Nomah at 2B if they move Loretta.

Depending on how much $ he wants, I would take him to play 2nd. This way if you he stays healthy is a bonifide all-star, but if he goes down you have Freel right behind him to play. Add that to giving Bergolla another year in AAA, and it works out well.

It all depends on how much cash he wants though.

My roommate is a big Indians fan and he said the Indians were interested in signing Garciaparra. He isn't around and I didn't save his link, I'll try to post it later if possible.

No - if we were going to bring in a veteran we might as well bring back RA.

I bet he is really kicking himself for turning down that big contract from Boston! What was that 5 years for 60 million. I don't think any other player in sports has turned down that large of contract and then started getting injuried and underperforming and make so much less.

Not to mention seeing the decline in both him and Jeter makes me even more impressed as to what Larkin did in his late 30's.

At that price RA is still the better bet. He can play a decent 2B, has played with the infield before and has had a better injury history.

The friendly confines of GABP could definitely help boost Nomar's offensive production IF he can stay healthy...I just don't see that happening though. However, if we could get him for $1 million for a year with incentives...it would, at least, be worth a look. I think there will be a bit more of a market for him than that though...so, I don't see that happening.

The friendly confines of GABP

Myth.

GABP gives up a few more homers, but basically has played as a neutral park. The Reds poor pitching and above-average offense has made it appear to be a hitters park.

I wouldn't expect a park slingshot affect compared to Wrigley, and certainly not compared to Fenway.

It looks like Dunn, FeLo, & Aurilia benefited from playing in GABP the most. You're right though, in that our TERRIBLE pitching & above average offense makes GABP look like more of a launchpad that maybe it really is.

Here are the Reds stats home and away though...the numbers are a lot closer than I expected them to be.

Would you be interested in the Reds pursuing the Nomar to play second (with Phillips at short) or as the right handed alternative for next year?

Set the bar high and then negotiate to a medium unless someone pulls a Texas and agrees to it.

Why dont we get loretta then. Give them larue or milton for him, or a few prospects. Im not against trying nomar at 2nd but Im not sure im all for it. Loretta however would be a nice pickup, should be able pretty cheaply to.

Loretta's a free agent. That was a post from last year.

It's a legitimate question that probably deserved it's owm thread for 2006. Too much old info here.

As far as Nomar here, it would be like getting Rich Aurilia minus the health. Too much risk. He needs to DH somewhere.

KronoRed

Nomar has played 1 game in his career at 2nd, he spent all of last season at first.

He's done in the middle infield.

1. he wants too much $

2. he wants too long of a contract

3. he is hugely injiry prone

4. he should play 1B or DH not 2b/ss/3b/etc

5. Nomar = the new Paul Molitor. A great player who can't stay healthy.
Molitor played 1B/DH for years and had a hall of fame career.

Has Nomar said if he wants to go back to the middle infield or is he happy playing 1B? That would kind of be key point before we even think about him
