Joe Morgan is back in the fold - if only for one night.

Reds CEO Bob Castellini said the Hall of Famer has agreed to attend the annual dinner for the players in Sarasota Feb. 21.

Castellini has made a concerted effort to get the team's former stars to return to the Reds.

Johnny Bench, a special assistant to the GM, has been heading the effort. Castellini was keen on getting Morgan to participate in some way.

"He's going to be on assignment for ESPN in Florida," Castellini said, "and he's going to come down for the day."

Tom Browning and Mario Soto will be guest instructors at spring training. Ted Power and Mike LaCoss have been hired to work in the minor leagues.

Castellini has hoping for other big names as well.

"We'd like to get Tony Perez and Barry Larkin back," he said. "They're icons."

Perez works for the Florida Marlins and Larkin works for the Washington Nationals.

"If they become available, we're interested," Castellini said.

I know if he were talking about active players, this would be tampering. Since Perez and Larkin are hired by other teams, would this be too?

I think it's one of those things that could be construed that way certainly, unless he's asked for and recieved permission from those other organizations to speak with Barry and Tony.

That said. I like Bob.

I do too. He knows what he wants, and he's not afraid to say it.

i love to hear stuff like this. i think having greats around only shows the players now, of what it was like and they can teach them the REDS WAY. and help them understand the pride of cincy and the reds. i hope we can get those 2 back

The Reds need to get Larkin back under the Reds umbrella. I don't know as to what capacity, but seeing him with another team is disheartening. My favorite moments as a Reds fan included Larkin. He is the Reds to me.

Ever see the centerfield monument flags in Busch Stadium? They, like the Yankees, honor their franchise history.

Looks like Castellini brought that respect for the past and love of the veteran Reds players with him.

I thought Dan O'Brien brought that?

I'd rather concentrate on bringing in better players for the current team.

That would be Barry's second bobblehead. Now they can tag-team against the J.O.B. squad of Pete Harnisch and Danny Graves.

I'll tell Bob to quit doing anything else and just start scouring the waiver wire. He's the friggin owner of the baseball team. He has MANY more obligations than what you said.

When are Mike De La Hoz and Jerry Arrigo coming back to help with INF and pitchers? :p:

I'll let Krivsky worry about that....I'll let Bob construct the organization. That's how things are now. Everybody has their own jobs to do.

DanO liked to bring in former players. Anyone remember fan favorite Corky Romano? He was a former player a number of times. Where's his bobblehead? Where's the love?

Did he mean back for the dinner or back in the fold? I wasn't clear on that.

looks like Cast is going against the Linder/Schott tradition of throwing away old Cincy icons. good to see - very dark days when i saw Doggie and Larkin with different teams, even if it was not as a player.

I'd be very happy if we made some sincere efforts at repairing the Reds' relationship with Tony Perez. I'm still ashamed at JimBo's treatment of him...

so the organization cant do both. so if you bring back tradition and pride that means you wont get any good players? that makes sense

It means tradition wont win you a thing today. Its all fine and good, nice for the feel good stuff, but I am tired as a reds fan of having to look to the past for my kicks. Fix the product on the field first, then make nice.

After this statements, it makes me think there is more truth to the Pete Rose rumors that I'd heard before.

It'll be a cold day in Miami before Pete Rose is allowed back in baseball.
