If I had to guess I'd say Sardinha gets the boot. He has virtually no chance to make the Opening Day roster, he'll easily clear waivers as he's done it before, and with Hatteberg's ability to catch in a pinch there isn't the urgency to have him on the 40 man and available if LaRue or Valentin went down for 15 days.

Just sending someone down on an option doesn't take him off the 40 man. You have to go the DFA route (or just flat out release the player) to get him off the 40 man, and the player is exposed to waivers before he can be assigned to the minors. Denorfia would surely be claimed, so it won't be him.

According to Marc Lancaster, they're still dotting the i's and crossing the t's, so the contract hasn't been signed and therefore, there is no need to make the corresponding move yet. They've "agreed to terms".

CINCINNATI -- The Reds signed veteran outfielders Quinton McCracken and Tuffy Rhodes to Minor League contracts on Tuesday.
Both players will be non-roster invites to the big league camp at Spring Training.

McCracken, who will turn 36 years old next month, batted .237 in 134 games with Diamondbacks last season. A lifetime .276 hitter over his 11 seasons in the Major Leagues, he has also played for the Rockies, Devil Rays, Twins and Mariners.

If McCracken earns a spot on the Reds 25-man roster out of camp, he will earn $600,000.

Rhodes has been playing in Japan since 1996 and in 2001, he tied Sadaharu Oh's Japanese single-season record with 55 home runs. From 1990-95, the 37-year-old played for the Astros, Cubs and Red Sox.

A Cincinnati native, Rhodes graduated from Western Hills High School in 1986.

In other news, the Reds designated pitcher Jung Bong for assignment to make room for first baseman Scott Hatteberg on the 40-man roster. Hatteberg agreed to a one-year, $750,000 contract with the club on Sunday.

Bong has 10 days to clear waivers, be traded or released. He missed all of last season recovering from September 2004 shoulder surgery. Part of the 2004 trade that sent Chris Reitsma to Atlanta, Bong only pitched three games for the Reds and went 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA.

Actually, Sardinha is probably safe from being DFAed.

The Reds are still paying him on that ML contract that they signed him to, aren't they? If they DFA Sardinha and someone claims him, the Reds are still on the hook for that contract.

If they hold Sardinha, there's always the miniscule chance he could be traded and they get off the hook for his salary.

Of course, I could be wrong. I don't remember for exactly how long the Reds are paying Sardinha on that ML deal they signed him to on draft day. And maybe I'm wrong about the contract if someone claims him..

Also, Sardinha is also the designated "emergency" catcher in AAA. He can't hit for squat, but at least he's a competent fielder. One could do worse with a AAA insurance catcher.
