This came down on the AP wires....

McCracken, Rhodes get minor league deals

CINCINNATI (AP) - Outfielders Quinton McCracken and Tuffy Rhodes
agreed to minor league deals today with the Cincinnati Reds.
The 35-year-old McCracken has played for Colorado, Tampa Bay,
Minnesota, Seattle and Arizona during an 11-year career.
Rhodes is 37 years old and grew up in Cincinnati. He played for
the Astros, the Cubs and the Red Sox before going to Japan, where
he spent the last 10 years.

According to this http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlibrary/ballplayers/R/Rhodes_Tuffy.stm

He tied the Japanese Record for most HRs in a season(55) in 2001/

Hit 3 HR's in an opening day in Chicago.

I assumed this had to be a joke, the Rhodes part anyway.

I thought that was a joke title when I first read it. Louisville certainly will have an interesting team next year.

Edit: Looks like I'm a touch slow, but at least I wasn't the only one fooled!

Here are Tuffy's Japanese League Stats since 1996. He actually had a pretty good career there (360 HR's).

2005 batting .240, and still hitting 27 homers? How short are the walls over there?

These signings mean absolutley nothing except to make sure the young players work their a$$es off in ST.

The young players are going to see these older guys playing their hearts out trying to make the team and it will up competition. And if one of them has a great spring, so what, they'll be the 5th OFer over Cruz or a young Denorfia.

All these minor league contracts amount to nothing unless one of them has a incredible spring.

IIRC when he got close to breaking the single season HR record over there they walked him intentionally almost ever AB.

Hmmm...............Quintin Terri-Timo presents "A season in the ville". A light hearted comedy about a geriatric triple-a outfield.

Co-Produced by Robert Castellini

Directed by Wayne Krivsky

Starring: Quintin "My Knees are" McKracken, Timo "Timeless" Perez, Tuffy "I've traveled many" Rhodes and Pedro "I now glide like a buzzard" Swann!

"I was inspired" praised Country Livings top critic Jack McKeon

"My Dream Team" hails The Classifieds own Dan O'Brien

"It was all my idea" lauds Yomiyura Giants resident stats man Brad Kullman

"I could've done that" cites one anonymous ex-Baltimore O's co-ahem CRITIC

Coming to a nursing home near you in '07!!!!

But seriously it's no big deal.

Krivsky can sign an entire team's worth of NRIs as far as I care, as long as he knows the difference between sifting through bench filler versus being infatuated with the idea of guys like Womack and Aurilia being regulars.

I could understand if Krivsky was taking wild flyers on pitchers, hoping to catch some lightning in a bottle. I know they need bodies in ST and at Louisville but shouldn't they be live bodies?

Maybe they signed Tuffy specifically for Opening Day and then cut him immediately. I mean, dude knows how to play on OD. Is McCracken a game 2 phenom? Next WayKriv will look for someone who has solid game 3 career numbers. I'm just afraid the cupboard might start getting bare come, oh, game 138 or so...
